Like ZebaSzp says, Linux is for server. If you want to use it for ur desktop, that's ur choice, but keep in mind you will have a lot of trouble to start learning how it works. Ubuntu 10.10 is quite simple today... that wasn't like this before... and if you got a problem, you most solve it with the command line.
Windows will try to solve all your problems automatically, but we must keep in mind that it has a limit. But anyway, my point is too long... you can still see what I'm trying to say!

1) Why do you say Linux isn't cheap? It's 100% free.
2) Linux is VERY popular on the server market. And I think hackers care more about, say, the NYSE assets than some average guy's data.
3) Linux is quite easy. Although it does have some command line crap, but it's still quite easy.
Yes, I'm a little partial, but I think I have good arguments.
