When you record these, do you find it easier to silence the other tracks (previously laid down) to just sing the one part you're recording or do you like have the others play so you have them to guage off of?
@DulyNoted88 I have the others playing along so that I can make sure I'm in time. Occasionally I may mute one track if it's ridiculously dissonant and I'm having trouble tuning
I think this is my favorite video on youtube. At the moment, anyway. I have my headphones on full blast with a tear in my eye. This is absolutely heavenly, and dude, you share my love for Eric Whitacre! I have to ask, though, what video editing do you use?
@ManukHaruthyunyan you're quite welcome. I do like that song.. but I try not to record 'sacred' songs when there are so many wonderful secular songs out there to enjoy, unless something really strikes my fancy
I was listening to this and something felt wrong, but you did the song just fine, and then I realized there isn't enough resonance in the room you're recording in.
@TheNickhis I kind of agree. I never understand why the a capella guys are so reluctant to put a bit of reverb on their recordings. Check out Brodie Cuff and Danny Fong singing Lullaby by Billy Joel to see how effective it can be. :)
you. are. really cool. (no sarcasm, i swear!) and sorry for spamming all of your videos haha. this one is nearly flawless! if you hold the notes to their fullest value and use your decrescendos like you did, it really has a nice, dynamic, ringing effect to it. think about releasing your sound, like if you've ever performed in a nice hall.
Awesome job! What software do you use, or how do you record and combine the tracks?
Also I was wondering whether you just took each voice part and copied it 4 times, or if you actually recorded it 32 times. Great job anyway, and great range.
@Fireavatar33 thank you! I use logic pro to record and layer the audio. and yes, I actually recorded this 32 times, if I just copied and pasted the tracks, you'd hear a kind of metallic sound, since all the voices in a part would be 100% the same
words cannot express how awesome this is...its amazing what one voice can do..also GREAT job on "Sleep".. i mightve commented on that one also lol but keep it up!!
@flippingdaisyburgers send it to him in face book.. he actually relpies to people.. he has replied to me several times... im a die hard whitacre fan... he communicated with his fans on f.b.
I've just listened to sevral of your videos (all fantastic) and I have to say the only thing bothering me is your vowels. A bit more round and they'd be perfect.
@BackLaneFilms2 after I've learned the piece, it really just depends on how long per day I want to work on it. If I'm trying to get it done as quickly as possible recording-wise it takes me however long the song is times however many parts there are. so to use this an example it took about 6 hours altogether in recording time. and then editing: the actual process of editing doesn't take all the long, maybe 30min-an hour, but the rendering takes forever. so it can take days for me to edit a video
@danwright32 Cool. I was just curious about the render time in Final Cut Pro X, which is supposedly said to make it faster to render due to the background processing feature. Do you have any experience in this?
@MatsKaarbo yes, I use final cut pro X (although it hadn't come out yet when I made this video)
It's different… If you have the processing speed to run it the background rendering is great. It's perfect for my 4 part videos. In my 32 part videos my computer can't handle all of the rendering while still doing editing, and it slows down everything on my computer while it's rendering. Even with all of that I would still say it's faster than the previous version
I´ve sung this song at a competative choir-level, and it´s certainly not an easy song to get in tune live nor on recording. This is extremely well done!
@progrockcoffee I always kinda had a slightly above average range, and I've done exercises to strengthen both ends and just get some more strength on the extremes of my range… Basically you're born with some of it and practice will get you the rest
You are very talented, I'm speechless. You're pitch is flawless, and I can't believe those high notes, wow, very impressive. Did you use auto tune at all? It doesn't sound like it but I'm curious. I love these whitacre pieces. My jazz choir in high school sang sleep, lux arumque, and cloudburst. Anyway awesome job :) I am very jealous of your range
@AnonymusDuck it defers depending on the song and the line that I'm singing. I think in this song (usually) I would sing in chest voice up until a Piano A or a Forte C… but I'm not sure.. most of the Soprano 1 line is in falsetto though
I'll be directing my school's choir in this song next year. I'll have to try recreating it sometime. XD I'd definitely think that the C#2 would be the most difficult note at the end for me though. What did you use to edit the videos together?
This man....Just.... Holy shit his range. i have preformed this before. the second bass line alone takes massive man parts. but to reach both the lowest bass and highest soprano. you sir should try out for the kings singers. as a fellow bass i salute you
last year our choir of 60+ SATB singers sang this and sleep.. you most def did better than us :P the only drawbacks with these kinds of videos is that you can hear all the little mouth noises you make when there's a dramatic pause.
Wow you are so talented! The only thing I see consistantly wrong in your videos is your vowels on your E's. To fix that (Especially on long E's,) when you are saying things like Keep, Weep, Sheep I don't know, make your lips round like you are saying Loo. It will keep you from going flat.
Beautifully done. Man, you should sing all the parts at once in a choir! lol Seriously though, well done. I sang this in my college choir and am picky about how it's done. I'm an Alto I/Soprano II and your pitch in that area is astounding and beautiful. Thanks for sharing! :D
@Elya08 thanks! yeah it's really hard to sing those lines, since it's not in my natural range. I can do Alto 2 and most of Alto 1 in chest voice but I have to do soprano in falsetto. I'm glad you like it ^_^
this is amazing, i've tried doing this before but couldn't get a good quality... are you using an external mic for this? and what are you using to keep tempo? or in time with the other tracks?
One: As a choral singer, it is very hard to impress me.
Two: As a female singer with a similar range, I am always looking for quality over range.
That being said, you are incredible. Amazing range, beautiful pitch, I even love your timbre (particularly your bass range, which is spine-chilling). Your falsetto range is shocking, but even more so was your Bass II - Baritone. I would LOVE to sing with you. Since that will probably never happen, watching and following is a great second best. Keep si
@ArianaSings060808 thank you very much for that wonderful comment! It's funny that you say you like my bass 2 range. cause I'm actually in 2 choirs right now and I sing tenor 1 in both haha.

@danwright32 well technically yes if you were to go by english standards... but isnt this in latin or some other language? so wouldnt it be "grah-veese-keh"? idk dude i am only 15 so idk how much i really know... i love your videos though. awesome job. as you can see by my username, i only play wind instruments. awesome job :)
@altobssn nope! it is latin, and I've actually sung it in 3 different choirs (on 3 different voice parts haha) and I'm definitely pronouncing it correctly.
@elliot2500 really? you listen to this amazing creation and thats what you say? @danwright32 this is beautiful, don't let people like this tell you otherwise.
he put a lot of work into this and you don't even have the decency to say "it was really good but you did it a little fast for my taste"
@AcEsDoWnFalL yeah thats why I love it. I have an ear for harmonies so I love getting the more difficult parts because it actually makes me work rather than getting bored after singing it through a few times
"Music is the wine that fills the cup of silence" - this quote popped up in my mind when I listened to this. It is amazing, I was really surprised you could pull off the high notes so well. It's such a shame that your videos don't have more views ;(
We sang this song for MSVMA All State Honors Choir last year. You did an amazing job pulling out the dissonance and purity in each chord. The Bass sounded really nice and full, as did the Alto (I sang Alto 1 when I performed it) and the Tenor part was rich and clear. In the choir we had, there were actually about 12 basses who were fully hitting the optional low B at the end. This might be one of my favorite songs that I've ever had a chance to perform. Gorgeous song. You did a wonderful job. :)
@MrCelloBass what?? haha no way. I definitely don't have a low C. the lowest I've ever gotten is a D and that's on my best day. maybe you're hearing an undertone (not even sure if that's a thing)… like an overtone but lower than the other voices?
@danwright32 Your low note on Lux Aurumque seems to be a solid D-flat, and I don't think it's an undertone. (I've heard other video/audio recordings on YouTube, and the piece seems to be in C, but your version is a 1/2 tone higher - oh, dear, those poor sopranos!) So unless you pitch-shifted the piece down, you're low note is clearly below D!!! Great job, by the way. Your attacks and releases beat those of the choir recording of the Hannover Choir with Mr. Whitacre conducting.
@RichardGilinsky nope, that's a D :) don't get me wrong, I've gotten lower then a D before. the lowest I've ever sang without being sick is a C. and this piece is in B
Very nice!

@altobssn why? thats how you're supposed to say it. "grah-veese-kway" if I were to write it phonetically.
danwright32 5 months ago
@danwright32 well technically yes if you were to go by english standards... but isnt this in latin or some other language? so wouldnt it be "grah-veese-keh"? idk dude i am only 15 so idk how much i really know... i love your videos though. awesome job. as you can see by my username, i only play wind instruments. awesome job :)
altobssn 4 months ago
@altobssn nope! it is latin, and I've actually sung it in 3 different choirs (on 3 different voice parts haha) and I'm definitely pronouncing it correctly.
and thanks! I'm glad you like them

he put a lot of work into this and you don't even have the decency to say "it was really good but you did it a little fast for my taste"

@AcEsDoWnFalL haha yeah, I wish I could get down to that, but I'm happy with my high range =]
danwright32 6 months ago
@AcEsDoWnFalL yeah thats why I love it. I have an ear for harmonies so I love getting the more difficult parts because it actually makes me work rather than getting bored after singing it through a few times
danwright32 6 months ago
@AcEsDoWnFalL I sing tenor :)

"Music is the wine that fills the cup of silence" - this quote popped up in my mind when I listened to this. It is amazing, I was really surprised you could pull off the high notes so well. It's such a shame that your videos don't have more views ;(
Keep up the good work!

you really can down to c * ?.... YOUUR AWSOME...
MrCelloBass 6 months ago
@MrCelloBass what?? haha no way. I definitely don't have a low C. the lowest I've ever gotten is a D and that's on my best day. maybe you're hearing an undertone (not even sure if that's a thing)… like an overtone but lower than the other voices?
danwright32 6 months ago
@danwright32 Your low note on Lux Aurumque seems to be a solid D-flat, and I don't think it's an undertone. (I've heard other video/audio recordings on YouTube, and the piece seems to be in C, but your version is a 1/2 tone higher - oh, dear, those poor sopranos!) So unless you pitch-shifted the piece down, you're low note is clearly below D!!! Great job, by the way. Your attacks and releases beat those of the choir recording of the Hannover Choir with Mr. Whitacre conducting.
RichardGilinsky 1 month ago
@RichardGilinsky nope, that's a D :) don't get me wrong, I've gotten lower then a D before. the lowest I've ever sang without being sick is a C. and this piece is in B
