Try this, set up the numbers to correlate to a more tonal scale (maybe a nice major or pentatonic) instead of that chromatic series of pitches. Yeah pentatonic is the way to go, it's universal to everyones ears. To vary it, have the first number (or any one number in the series, or make it random) specify the scale to which the other numbers will correlate. So the first number is 2, then D Min, or first number is 5 then E pentatonic. Something like that. Just a suggestion.
