He's right in a way. I mean, you go out, you eat, you wanna save money, but you still like food. It's not my gotdamn fault that those cocksuckers pay them 2 bucks an hour.
@parpyduck@therealericlester Yeah, the convenience, and the fact that not everybody can cook as good a meal. You're paying for a service that someone can do for you better and quicker.
If a waitress/waiter starts complaining to you when you don't tip or you don't tip enough, you should go to another waiter and ask see the managar and make a formal complaint about that person.
See how long that fucker keeps his/her job.
The second waitress starts bitching about the tip, she just made sure that the customer ain't probably coming back and if the customer ain't coming back, they might as well be selling micro heated meals as nobody is coming back anyways.
I used to work at McDonalds for eight months. The only time I was tipped, was when I was doing an overnight shift, and some stoned middle eastern guys came in, and handed me 5$ for "stayin up all night to work". Those people were promptly asked to leave me alone by my manager, and I was asked to return their tip, as tipping isn't allowed at McDonald's. When they didn't want to accept the tip when I returned it, my manager took it for herself.
I love the esoteric meaning in this clip. Just shows how one man thinking outside of the box can withhold his point against more than 5 people with the common society sheep mentality, and in the end he wins. Brillance.
@SorcerersOrphan O my god I am so butthurt right now you don't even know. If you're going to call waitresses self-entitled over a societal standard, than you should move to a place where people don't tip each other. You're argument is weak to the point that it's the same to say such a thing, because you should walk into a restaurant EXPECTING to tip your waiter. Again, it's a societal standard, you are not paying extra. Paying extra would be leaving a large tip, and leaving no tip is for dicks.
I don't tip unless the waiter/waitress actually leaves some sort of impression. It's not my fucking problem if his/her boss pays too little for the work. I paid what was agreed upon, if you want extra then you work extra.
The fact that they have unfair work contracts is irrelevant. The customer cannot affect those in any way.
Go talk to your boss if you make too little or to the union.
Teach a man to fish and you'll feed him for a lifetime etc.
@Varjensag One time I went to a sports bar with friends, and we ordered a couple of beers. I had every intention of tipping, but instead the female bartender approached me after about 30 minutes, really angry because I had not tipped her YET. So then I have to stop what I'm doing, do my 15% math, dig through my change, and accept my contrived embarrassment, all while eyes of burning anger are focused on my every move, while I PAY them money as they're rude to me for no genuine reason.
@pamle1 That's not what you're supposed to do. Whenever a waiter or waitress DEMANDS a tip they should be told to go fuck themselves and you should let the manager know what kind of rude behaviour they're subjecting their customers to.
Also you should stop eating there until she is fired.
We make less than minimum wage. Tipping is reward for good service. Without tipping the company has to pay us more which means two things: 1, less job security, no fear of downsizing when we're paid $4 an hour from the man and 2, increasing the costs to the public to make up for it. So it would be the same thing.
I got eyeballed by a barman in the states after I bought my round in, I asked him what was up he said "so you're not gonna tip huh?" I was left shocked for two reasons; 1 we don't tip in bars in Britain, occasionally if you might buy them a drink but that's quite rare. and 2 even if barmen do get tips on a regular basis in the states you shouldn't demand one and be rude to the customers in the process, after we'd had that drink we moved on to the next bar.
There are some good points, but in reality most waiters / waitresses DO NOT MAKE MINIMUM WAGE, they make between $2.35-$5.00 an hour and the vast majority of their money is made via tips, as in, if you dont tip them atleast something they most likely wont make enough to scrape a living out of.
Paying the staff is what its for, if you're working somewhere where they dont charge one and you dont make enough, either complain or go somewhere that does.
having said that i still tip if the waiter/waitress was friendly, attentive, and helpful. but thats what mr pink was saying when he wanted his cup filled six times.
Mr Pink's argument is SHIT. At McDonald's they prepare the food in the back, wrap it in disposable sheets of paper, bring it to the counter, and the customer either leaves with it or carries it to the table themselves, usually filling up THEIR OWN drink along the way. MCDONALD'S employees wouldn't deserve a tip for that!
At a restaurant, they wash an endless parade of dishes for you, and BRING EVERYTHING TO YOU. That is why you tip them.
So...your point is? I would agree with not tipping someone for bad service, but I will still always tip something. I mean most of these people make shit for wages..if you don't like tipping then don't eat out. If you still eat out and don't tip...well you're an asshole, simple as that. I tip better for good service..and the minimum for OK service. No tip for bad service.
@refuckulate420 Yes, I tip. But these Waitresses should be paid a normal wage, they shouldn't have to rely on the generosity of strangers. The European system is much better, where tips are given if the service is excellent. The waitresses are paid more there, and thus are encouraged to provide better service in hopes of getting a big tip. Not this American system where tipping is mandatory, no matter how bad the service.
Well depending on the state, some include gratuity right in the bill. The state I'm in it isn't mandatory at all...and having worked in resturants I can tell you waiters and waitresses get shafted by people even for good service.
Have you ever seen the movie Waiting? That would help explain the job pretty well!
As a waitress, I'd just like to say that if you run us to death and then leave us no tip, we will remember you. And next time you come in, we will be awful to you. Why would we expend any effort on you? After all, we're already not getting anything.
Ah, fuck 'em. It's like yelling into the abyss. It will only yell back at you.
Love that video. We dont tip either for all the stuff they are already paid to do. Its their jobs. I am not paying someone 80bucks or more to color my hair for less than thirty minutes work, then they expect a tip on top of it no way.
This clip is outright wrong in that waitresses do not make minimum wage without tips. They make significantly less but will be paid up to minimum wage if the tips are not enough. However, they are taxed as if they are tipped on every order and actually end up paying to serve any customer who does not tip.
And if no one tipped your food would just cost 20% more, you idiots.
You're the idiot here. In other countries it is not customery to tip, why? Because they make a decent wage without tips. It is NOT the customer's responsibility to subsidise an employees wages. Wake the fuck up, tipping is encourage but it puts more money in the pockets of companies. If they don't like their wages, form a fucking Union. Fucking idiotic capitalism...
@RoKetha This clip is also from 1992 when American labor laws were different. Perhaps food prices would increase if employers paid their servers a livable wage, but I don't see a problem with that. Sitdown restaurants are already expensive in 2010, and increased food prices would inevitably lead to fewer patrons, thereby causing many restaurants to close. The result is smarter businessmen opening restaurants that keep costs down and pay a good wage. It's a win-win for the American economy.
They don't make minimum wage; service work is the only profession that is allowed to pay less than minimum wage specifically because of the tips. On top of that, they tip out the rest of the staff and for some professions like stripping they need to pay the owner for the privilege of working in the first place. If you don't tip, you're basically telling them to pay you for the privilege of working for you. Consider it part of the cost of going out; if you don't like it, stay in.
they probably spit in your food when they know that your a bad tipper. Waitresses are actually lose money when you don't tip so it's more like they are paying for some of your meal.
tipping is basically a policy of f*cking regular people in the ass by rich muthafuccas. when you make money they tax you, when you spend your money they tax you, when you own your own house they tax you for ever, besides all this sh*t, they tell you 'f*ck you more, you sorry asses are responsible for the living of other sorry asses who cannot graduate from college and cannot even make a minimum wage, rich muthafuccas aint give a fat f*ck to those fucking losers'.
I never tip when i go eat at restaurants. You expect me to Tip just because she refills my coke and brings me extra butter for my bread....FUCKYOU!!!!!!!!!!! Get a real job losers! Never tip and never will.
@wildkaos626 why pay menu price for food at a restaurant when you can eat at home? You're literally paying extra for someone to cook for you when it's same meat, vegetables, etc. you could buy at a grocery store on the cheap? You don't deserve the money you have if you're just gonna throw it away on shit you could do yourself.
thegarbinator is absolutely right, although technically "optional", our government taxes waitresses on tips they're "expected to receive", something like 15% of their wage. One should be rewarded for they're performance, not because the government guilts us in to doin so by f@#%ing the person doing the job in the first place...
My mother was a waitress for 12 years before she became an insurance agent. Some waitress' DO make minimum wage, some make less then minimum wage because the restaurant expects they will make a certain amount of money per hour in TIPS.
Here in the US the amount of wages paid per hour depends on the restaurant you work for.
Tipping is part of the system because waitstaff are paid LESS than HALF of minimum wage and at least 60% of their pay is meant to come from tips from the customer. (Yes that 60% is the difference between how much the employer pays them and how much minimum wage is)
i imagine that's the way it goes in the states unfortunately. i can empathise with the waitresses over there; however, where i live, the wages are about $11 or $12 / hour and they actually get paid at that rate.
And tipping should be completely optional, regardless of service, over there.
The problem is a lot of citizens of the US believe tipping is optional while the entire system is based around the consumer providing a tip. That is unless the service was terrible.
Tipping *is* optional, that's what a TIP is. You don't get a tip for doing your job, even if you have some convoluted argument about how you deserve it.
If someone does an excellent job, they should get something extra. I don't get a tip for doing my job, they shouldn't either, if they don't like it they can quit.
I don't care what someone is paid for doing their job, no one is forcing them to work there, and I'm not going jump in and save the day either.
Actually, due to the current economic problems (and what I listed earlier which you seem to ignore), the people don't have much of a choice.
If no one tips, the waitstaff get less than minimum wage (which is REQUIRED). They are paid less because of the fact tipping is involved in the United States. I don't care if you feel "cheated", but if you go to a place where the waitstaff are paid less than minimum wage and your server does their job well, you should fucking tip. If you don't want to..
I am not filth. I work my ass off doing what I do, and not once have I openly expressed my disgust at a cheapskate like you who didn't tip because they thought they "didn't need to" That is garbage, and you are making excuses as to why you want to keep a couple extra bucks. Guess what? You are cheap. End of story.
Btw I'm working my way through college. That's why I work as a server.
Who's forcing anyone to work? I think expecting extra money every time you do your job is rediculous. There are a myriad service oriented jobs that are more difficult than waiting tables performed by workers that don't get tipped. No one is entitled to a tip. If you get one fine, if not then fine. Don't like it? Start a new career.
It's as simple as , I highly doubt I will tip a waiter or waitress for doing their job, unless they are exceptional, in which case, yeah maybe a little bit extra.
Once again, it is not my fault that they don't get paid more. If they have an issue they can take it up with management and leave me out of the equation.
I see you aren't able to understand this concept. You're obviously biased, so perhaps it is impossible.
@thegarbinator The Fair Labor Standards Act says that tipped employees earning $30+/month in tips may be paid not less than $2.13/hr in direct wages. However, if your direct wages plus tips AFTER tipping out does not come to $7.25/hr, the employer must make up the difference. So, if nobody tips and you get shafted, the question is if you'll actually show your pay stub to your boss and demand that he/she fork over the cash to bring you up to minimum wage.
They make less than minimum wage because tip is factored into their pay. I have no problem with not being tipped PROVIDED I am paid minimum wage or higher.
Mr. Pink is what is wrong with a lot of people who go to restaurants. You don't want to tip? Then get it mandated to the waitstaff have to be paid minimum wage and watch as your meal prices skyrocket.
I've applied to other jobs, but the fact is that no one is hiring.
Also, YOUR job shouldn't require tipping because you are being paid more than waitstaff. Understand this: WAITSTAFF EMPLOYEES ARE PAID BELOW MINIMUM WAGE BECAUSE THE ENTIRE SYSTEM IS BASED ON THE CUSTOMERS TIPPING THE WAITER/WAITRESS BASED ON THEIR SERVICE. Tipping is not meant to be optional unless the service was poor because you the customer are being charged less for your food due to the employer having to pay the...
...servers less than half of the minimum wage. I would be fine with not being tipped if I was paid minimum wage, but that isn't the case. I rely on getting paid my 7.50/hr based on you the customer tipping me based on the quality of my service.
Understand that concept before you say that tipping is for the birds. It isn't. Tipping is involved in the system for a reason.
I knew a girl named Camille who used to brag about how she was paid on average $300.00 a night in tips. If you've made your share of earnings for what you have done for the night, do you tell customers to keep their money or do you continue to pocket the goods? You establish the minimum required tip, what's the max? The system is a crock and if wait staff didn't want it that way then they would change it.
*SPOILERS* Mr. Pink was the smart one in the group. He knew they were set up and he was right to suspect Orange but White was too blinded by compassion to suspect Orange. Plus he was the only survivor.
People also fail to realize that people need incentive to work hard. Taco bell pays 6-7 an hour. Fine dining pays 2.13. But look at the difference in the service, and then you understand why tipping is taking care of your server right back. Very few blacks tip well (sorry it's proven and even acknowledged by blacks), and the few that do tip well feel they were screwed over by the others that built the horrible reputation. And people wonder why they can't get good service.
Even people in movies apparently don't know that most server postions pay 2-4 an hour, which honestly is just to cover tip taxes. Most servers never see a check. And where I work, 90% of the servers are students or graduates. Funny how people just assume things of servers.
What is great about this one,is the fact that even if it is obvious to the most of the viewers that mr.pink's opinion it's trully the same as the director's in real life, both sides are being supported perfectly.Tip's supporters opinion were supported with the strongest possible arguments even if the point of this dialogue is that tip is stupid. That is what Quentin is about.
Everything he says is absolutely true. Too many waiters and waitresses feel like they are entitled to a tip no matter what, that it's just part of their salary. I don't mind tipping if I get really good service, but why should I pay them extra just for doing the bare minimum? All I'm required to pay is the price on the menu and the sales tax, anything extra is my choice. That's why it's called a "gratuity", which literally means gift. I'm not obligated to give them a damn thing.
Do you realize that they make less than minimum wage? They only make approximately $3.50 an hour just because of the fact that they can make it up with tips. So if it's a slow day or an asshole decides to give nothing they make shit money.
It's common knowledge that waitstaff jobs pay shit. Therefore, they're aware that the salary is shit when they sign up for the job. No one is forcing them to work a crappy job with a gun to their head. If it's a slow day, tough shit. Get a new job.
You are ignorant. Servers choose their job because it's one of the few jobs that doesn't usually require a lot of experience. Like it or not, the restaurant has put the burden on the customer to pay for the service. If you don't like the system, complain to the restaurant. Or get it to go. Or go to McDonald's. No one gets something for free and that includes service. I can't wait to be out of school and not have to wait tables again because of people like you.
screw that - I never tip!!! just another form of socially accepted form of bribery the restaurant owners should take a cue from hospitality business in San Fran, No Tipping Allowed In places where tips are expected, I dont eat or take it to go if I have to now, the most ridiculous things are tipping jars at Starbucks!!!
@Mrmikeshelton Sure you don't. You're probably one of those people who thinks that I'm not your waitress but your slave. In almost every state the hourly salary for a waitress is $2.14 an hour, and about 4% of what my daily sales are I have to give out of my tips to help pay the hostess. So Tips ARE a waitress's salary.
@Mrmikeshelton Remember that I have to PAY to serve you your 12 glasses of sweet tea and your 15 ramekins of Ranch Dressing and listen to you complain about how you wanted your steak done Rare but it's way too bloody. Believe me I'll be really nice when when I do it but just because you throw down a buck at the end of your $40 meal doesn't make you own me. There are no other jobs about there for a 20 something college student. So I can't even go work somewhere else, but you can go eat at home.
His whole argument is flawed the moment he bring up minimum wage. McD's do pay minimum wage, waitresses and the like do NOT have a flat "minimum wage" given to them. Their employer pays something around $2 an hour and then the tips are factored in, usually then making AT LEAST minimum wage. If it's less than, the employer then covers the difference. It's peoples' ignorance that hurts the working class and their assumptions they know what they're talking about when they don't. I.E. - Mr. Pink
if you don't tip, the waitress has just wasted the time she spent on your table and makes nothing for it. and if you go to any other country where waitresses make regular wage and don't survive off of tips, the service probably won't be as good or as fast and the included service charge makes the meal more expensive anyway, so you're paying the same thing. the whole reason the system is set up this way is to encourage servers to work harder. its capitalism, and why punish the servers for it.
which is exactly why you shouldn't automatically tip them. If you do, where's the incentive for good service? Why hussle, if you know you're getting tipped anyway? And I refuse to eat at places that automatically add it to your bill. That's bs. If I want to tip my waiter/waitress, that should be my choice and I give the money directly to them. Otherwise it goes into a big pot and they redistribute it and get taxed for it.
"I don't care what you would 'normally' do, cough up your buck like everyone else. I paid for your breakfast." Joe nailed Mr. Pink better than anyone, even Mr. White.
@wmhoad So true. Mr Pink's point could be seen as valid if he were paying for his meal. But he's getting a free lunch, so he should at least have the decency to chip in a dollar, the cheap bastard. :-)
LOL why don't you drop dead and spare the world your idiocy instead of lurking youtube comments flaming people to make yourself feel like an hero, you slimy cowardice gutless self-indulgent liberal scum. So either grow some brains and learn how to use them or shut the fuck up and get the fuck out you fucking idiotic worthless piece of shit.
Hilarious! Actually, the minimum tip for waiters/waitresses is 15%. And if you really want to communicate bad service, if you don't leave a tip, the person will think you just forgot. Do what I do -- leave two pennies as a protest against crappy service!
alright...here we go...society says tip at certain places...somenot...but just do this...if you dont like to tip and think its bullshit..like me...then dont go out to eat....stick with a in n out burger....that way i dont have to worry about tipping for shit...if you dont mind tipping...then go out to eat in places where you usually tip...but i do agree with pink when he says how society says...tip these people here..but dont tip these others over here...fuck that!
or,be a jackass and quit your waitressin job and join mcdonalds if its so fuckin great. Why rely on us to pay your way.either work harder and earn that tip but don't expect it automatically, like Mr. Pink said-he is right.Like I said before, shut up and be grateful you have a job!!!
fuck society trying to tell me I have some "moral obligation" to leave some waitress a tip for giving me shitty service. I only tip if the service is EXCELLENT, and even then I don't do all that 15% bullshit unless they really deserve it.
If you are using a service that is widely-known to be a tipped service, such as restaurants, bars, hair salons, valet parking, etc., then I believe there is a moral obligation to tip for good service. Here is why - a waiter at a restaurant provides you service with the expectation of being compensated a minimum of 15% for quality service. If you don't intend to tip, then you should tell the waiter up front so that he can decide whether or not to provide you the service.
That is ignorant. This is a major scam by restaurant owners to have basically free labor. We have to pay extra after we already paid good money for a meal? That's bullshit. Also is the percentage concept. Why should I have to pay extra money for the lady to carry a lobster on a tray than chicken fingers? You should really think through some of the things you do on a daily basis.
So you say that if I intend on not tipping, I should inform the waitress so that she can decide whether to serve me or not? That's bullshit. She/he must serve me, it's their job. Luckily I don't live in a country were tipping is a moral obligation. In Norway it is uncommon to leave a tip in restaurants, bars, hair salons, valet parking etc. And when I am abroad I never tip either. I fully agree with mr. Pink.
I thought the minimum was a 0% tip, you know, to tell them about how poor their service is. Which is on the one point I have to agree with tipping since it sends out a message to the waiter/waitress that they are not doing their job right/have insulted you when they have done nothing wrong. Of course the best situation is when I have friends like you that believe tipping is a "moral" thing, and they will actually cover for me on tips rather than try to convince me to lay down the green. Cheers
I guess back then it made more sense, but now, those bastards get away with paying them two bucks an hour.

No tip for bad service.
refuckulate420 1 year ago
@refuckulate420 Yes, I tip. But these Waitresses should be paid a normal wage, they shouldn't have to rely on the generosity of strangers. The European system is much better, where tips are given if the service is excellent. The waitresses are paid more there, and thus are encouraged to provide better service in hopes of getting a big tip. Not this American system where tipping is mandatory, no matter how bad the service.
c0mbineelite 1 year ago 3
@c0mbineelite
Well depending on the state, some include gratuity right in the bill. The state I'm in it isn't mandatory at all...and having worked in resturants I can tell you waiters and waitresses get shafted by people even for good service.
Have you ever seen the movie Waiting? That would help explain the job pretty well!

RoKetha 1 year ago
@RoKetha
JudgeMazza 1 year ago 5
@RoKetha This clip is also from 1992 when American labor laws were different. Perhaps food prices would increase if employers paid their servers a livable wage, but I don't see a problem with that. Sitdown restaurants are already expensive in 2010, and increased food prices would inevitably lead to fewer patrons, thereby causing many restaurants to close. The result is smarter businessmen opening restaurants that keep costs down and pay a good wage. It's a win-win for the American economy.

AceTracer 2 years ago
They don't make minimum wage; service work is the only profession that is allowed to pay less than minimum wage specifically because of the tips. On top of that, they tip out the rest of the staff and for some professions like stripping they need to pay the owner for the privilege of working in the first place. If you don't tip, you're basically telling them to pay you for the privilege of working for you. Consider it part of the cost of going out; if you don't like it, stay in.

thegarbinator is absolutely right, although technically "optional", our government taxes waitresses on tips they're "expected to receive", something like 15% of their wage. One should be rewarded for they're performance, not because the government guilts us in to doin so by f@#%ing the person doing the job in the first place...
SKippy68189 2 years ago 5
Waitress' are NOT paid minimum wage.
barbarasprague 2 years ago
My mother was a waitress for 12 years before she became an insurance agent. Some waitress' DO make minimum wage, some make less then minimum wage because the restaurant expects they will make a certain amount of money per hour in TIPS.
Here in the US the amount of wages paid per hour depends on the restaurant you work for.

skinnyloserboy 2 years ago
Tipping is part of the system because waitstaff are paid LESS than HALF of minimum wage and at least 60% of their pay is meant to come from tips from the customer. (Yes that 60% is the difference between how much the employer pays them and how much minimum wage is)
Hurr.
thegarbinator 2 years ago
i imagine that's the way it goes in the states unfortunately. i can empathise with the waitresses over there; however, where i live, the wages are about $11 or $12 / hour and they actually get paid at that rate.
skinnyloserboy 2 years ago
And tipping should be completely optional, regardless of service, over there.
The problem is a lot of citizens of the US believe tipping is optional while the entire system is based around the consumer providing a tip. That is unless the service was terrible.
thegarbinator 2 years ago
Tipping *is* optional, that's what a TIP is. You don't get a tip for doing your job, even if you have some convoluted argument about how you deserve it.
If someone does an excellent job, they should get something extra. I don't get a tip for doing my job, they shouldn't either, if they don't like it they can quit.
I don't care what someone is paid for doing their job, no one is forcing them to work there, and I'm not going jump in and save the day either.
Archedgar 2 years ago
Actually, due to the current economic problems (and what I listed earlier which you seem to ignore), the people don't have much of a choice.
If no one tips, the waitstaff get less than minimum wage (which is REQUIRED). They are paid less because of the fact tipping is involved in the United States. I don't care if you feel "cheated", but if you go to a place where the waitstaff are paid less than minimum wage and your server does their job well, you should fucking tip. If you don't want to..
thegarbinator 2 years ago
...tip then go to a fast food restaurant or a place that pays the servers minimum wage.
Be unemployed in the US and be forced to work a dead end job like that and come back to me, you greedy selfish prick.
thegarbinator 2 years ago

It is no surprise uneducated, hotheaded simpletons like yourself end up as waiters. Thank you , come again, hahaha.
Archedgar 2 years ago
Argues and cries? My point is completely logical.
That's why I work as a server.
thegarbinator 2 years ago
A "server"? it's called a waiter.
I think you are confused, I am not cheap, you are lazy and obviously do a poor job. It is trash like you that makes other waiters/waitresses look bad.
You can have the last word. I don't mind if someone like you feels like they've won. At least you'll feel like you won *something* for once.
Archedgar 2 years ago
@thegarbinator
ValoSGonzalez 1 year ago 4
It's as simple as , I highly doubt I will tip a waiter or waitress for doing their job, unless they are exceptional, in which case, yeah maybe a little bit extra.
Once again, it is not my fault that they don't get paid more. If they have an issue they can take it up with management and leave me out of the equation.
I see you aren't able to understand this concept. You're obviously biased, so perhaps it is impossible.
Archedgar 2 years ago
@thegarbinator The Fair Labor Standards Act says that tipped employees earning $30+/month in tips may be paid not less than $2.13/hr in direct wages. However, if your direct wages plus tips AFTER tipping out does not come to $7.25/hr, the employer must make up the difference. So, if nobody tips and you get shafted, the question is if you'll actually show your pay stub to your boss and demand that he/she fork over the cash to bring you up to minimum wage.

Archedgar 2 years ago
I've applied to other jobs, but the fact is that no one is hiring.
Also, YOUR job shouldn't require tipping because you are being paid more than waitstaff. Understand this: WAITSTAFF EMPLOYEES ARE PAID BELOW MINIMUM WAGE BECAUSE THE ENTIRE SYSTEM IS BASED ON THE CUSTOMERS TIPPING THE WAITER/WAITRESS BASED ON THEIR SERVICE. Tipping is not meant to be optional unless the service was poor because you the customer are being charged less for your food due to the employer having to pay the...
thegarbinator 2 years ago
...servers less than half of the minimum wage. I would be fine with not being tipped if I was paid minimum wage, but that isn't the case. I rely on getting paid my 7.50/hr based on you the customer tipping me based on the quality of my service.
Understand that concept before you say that tipping is for the birds. It isn't. Tipping is involved in the system for a reason.
thegarbinator 2 years ago
@thegarbinator

KatieTaylor24 2 years ago 2
Even people in movies apparently don't know that most server postions pay 2-4 an hour, which honestly is just to cover tip taxes. Most servers never see a check. And where I work, 90% of the servers are students or graduates. Funny how people just assume things of servers.

It's common knowledge that waitstaff jobs pay shit. Therefore, they're aware that the salary is shit when they sign up for the job. No one is forcing them to work a crappy job with a gun to their head. If it's a slow day, tough shit. Get a new job.
NicoleFromQueens 3 years ago 3
You are ignorant. Servers choose their job because it's one of the few jobs that doesn't usually require a lot of experience. Like it or not, the restaurant has put the burden on the customer to pay for the service. If you don't like the system, complain to the restaurant. Or get it to go. Or go to McDonald's. No one gets something for free and that includes service. I can't wait to be out of school and not have to wait tables again because of people like you.

MsMomentomori 1 year ago
@Mrmikeshelton Remember that I have to PAY to serve you your 12 glasses of sweet tea and your 15 ramekins of Ranch Dressing and listen to you complain about how you wanted your steak done Rare but it's way too bloody. Believe me I'll be really nice when when I do it but just because you throw down a buck at the end of your $40 meal doesn't make you own me. There are no other jobs about there for a 20 something college student. So I can't even go work somewhere else, but you can go eat at home.
MsMomentomori 1 year ago
His whole argument is flawed the moment he bring up minimum wage. McD's do pay minimum wage, waitresses and the like do NOT have a flat "minimum wage" given to them. Their employer pays something around $2 an hour and then the tips are factored in, usually then making AT LEAST minimum wage. If it's less than, the employer then covers the difference. It's peoples' ignorance that hurts the working class and their assumptions they know what they're talking about when they don't. I.E. - Mr. Pink

if you don't tip, the waitress has just wasted the time she spent on your table and makes nothing for it. and if you go to any other country where waitresses make regular wage and don't survive off of tips, the service probably won't be as good or as fast and the included service charge makes the meal more expensive anyway, so you're paying the same thing. the whole reason the system is set up this way is to encourage servers to work harder. its capitalism, and why punish the servers for it.
jules12121 3 years ago
which is exactly why you shouldn't automatically tip them.

PuNkxrhStosLife 3 years ago
If you are using a service that is widely-known to be a tipped service, such as restaurants, bars, hair salons, valet parking, etc., then I believe there is a moral obligation to tip for good service. Here is why - a waiter at a restaurant provides you service with the expectation of being compensated a minimum of 15% for quality service. If you don't intend to tip, then you should tell the waiter up front so that he can decide whether or not to provide you the service.
hillbillyvampyre 3 years ago
That is ignorant. This is a major scam by restaurant owners to have basically free labor. We have to pay extra after we already paid good money for a meal? That's bullshit. Also is the percentage concept. Why should I have to pay extra money for the lady to carry a lobster on a tray than chicken fingers? You should really think through some of the things you do on a daily basis.
ImAlwaysR1ght 3 years ago
So you say that if I intend on not tipping, I should inform the waitress so that she can decide whether to serve me or not? That's bullshit. She/he must serve me, it's their job. Luckily I don't live in a country were tipping is a moral obligation. In Norway it is uncommon to leave a tip in restaurants, bars, hair salons, valet parking etc. And when I am abroad I never tip either. I fully agree with mr. Pink.
Lampehus 3 years ago 3
I thought the minimum was a 0% tip, you know, to tell them about how poor their service is. Which is on the one point I have to agree with tipping since it sends out a message to the waiter/waitress that they are not doing their job right/have insulted you when they have done nothing wrong. Of course the best situation is when I have friends like you that believe tipping is a "moral" thing, and they will actually cover for me on tips rather than try to convince me to lay down the green. Cheers
