@AustinAMH1587 they are NOT a d2 school... they're a d1 school, just in the FCS not the FBS.... and back then they could have beaten any team in a non bcs conference (except for maybe utah and boise) and a couple of the lower ranked bcs schools
did you hear about the MMichigan fan who was so upset when Appalachian State beat them that he tried to commit suicide by jumping out of a basement window?
Mike Hart is such a prick. He promised to come back to win a nation championship and beat the Buckeyes(YEAH RIGHT!!!). He deserved this more than anyone. Faking an injury against the Buckeyes and pulling himself out of the game. Wuss!
@Zzrc1538zZ I remember after a great 2006 season, Michigan was one of the Heavy Favorites to win it all in 2007 because they had just about EVERYONE returning. This loss sent them into a tailspin.
well that was a sign, that bad things were coming, the big house faced three years of humiliation, but now we got a Michigan man back on the job who's ready to bring back Michigan football
There really isn't that big of a difference the upper FCS teams could beat lower FBS teams and its happened many times. Even teams the likes of VT and UMich have lost to thhem.
wow, you guys beat michigan, big fucking deal, they proved to be a real fraud that year. ond who gives a fuck if you won 3 national championships? it was against shit competition
@FoxyHoxie119 hey smartass, thats a div 1-AA team. that means less scholarships and less experienced athletes. but in this case i guess that would be michigan
A Real fraud? Are you stupid? I mean, sure... If you think beating Florida in a bowl game at the end of a season is a fraud. Appalachian beat a GOOD michigan team. Also, shit competition? Right.... To get to those championships, Appalachian had to beat good teams: 1. JMU- Later beat Virginia Tech. 2. Delaware- Had NFL QB Joe Flacco on that team. 3. Michigan- had tons of NFL talent on the team.
So I have a question for you. How big of an idiot do you look like now?
i just have to say after listening to your guys' radio call, however wild and strange it was, remains the only call of this play that makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up
this game just made us understand that the top 4 or 5 teams in 1-AA can compete with top 25 in 1-A. Football is execution and great coaching. Not to mention these kids are still developing and their playing potential is not yet known. JMU, N. Dakota St...........the hits will keep coming.
Appy State would have done the same to most FBS teams that season don't let the name fool you, they had been dominating the FCS and whoever played them. 07 Michigan wasn't a bad team at all they shut Florida down and played OSU down to the wire that same season. Fucking give credit where it's deserved.
1st. We are not "appy state" and I do not know who the fuck "appy state" is. If you are referring to "App State", then you might want to say "App State."
2nd. So with your logic, We could have beaten any of the top 10 schools that year? No.
3rd. Go back to your blundering turd.... woops, meant thundering herd.
You can't be serious...i just gave credit to your entire program not just a single game. Appy State was loaded with talent in those years, especially at the skill spots.
With my logic Appy State would have been a top 25 FBS team without a doubt. They were that good. They won three national titles in a row. That's pretty hard to do i don't care what level they were playing on.
Why did you make a Marshall reference? Do you think i'm a Marshall fan or something?
@appstatefanRS dude chill the hell out. i go to app state and that dude was saying we were good enough to beat them so it wasnt an upset. you make ppl from App look like dick bags. Way to be an over-protective fan. ahaha. go APPS!
So i make Appalachian State fans look like dick bags? Look.... I know we are really good, but he is taking away from what that game really was. It was a HUGE upset, and it put us into the national spotlight moreso than the 2 prior national championships.
Soo... if you REALLY want to go back to 10,000-15,000 people a game, go ahead, but i would like to keep the 26,000+ average. THAT game gave us all of the attention, not the national championships.
I don't agree with the opening slide. The Mountaineers came into the Big House with expectations to win. This is why they worked so hard in the Spring, Summer, and Fall camp. To beat Michigan and win another Division 1-AA title!
@amped0808 a 16 over a 1 would be way bigger...that is post season...this is a bad and highly over rated michigian team not giving app st the respect they deserve and getting shocked early in the season....yes HUGE upset but not comparable to a 1-16 upset
@becker21171 a 16 over a 1 would be huge. but you gotta remember that app. st. is not even in the same division. Michigan had a really good team that year. they even beat florida in the capital one bowl
you got to admit, that game was pretty spectactular, Michigan was favorites by 27 points with over 100,000 fans routing for them, and they lost. GO UNDERDOGS!!!!!
What I don't understand is how Michigan really thought they were scheduling a "cupcake" team for their season opener. Appalachain State was the I-AA champion the previous year and they were by no means a pushover. My hats off to A-State for going into Michigan, taking the money, raping their team, and leaving them to ponder their stupidity!
@bjbjbzz oh God. you can't go anywhere without reading "SEC SEC SEC!!!!" fantard comments. you are aware that the michigan team that lost to appalachian state beat florida in their bowl game that same year, right? no, you probably aren't aware of that. most SEC fans are completely oblivious to reality.
@ianharwood Meanwhle the rest of your "elite" big 10 teams got wrecked in their bowls. SEC is better, SEC is more competitive, and as the SEC gets stronger, the Big 10 is getting weaker. Hate to break it to you, but the last 12 years that the BCS has been around, the SEC has won 6 of those championships, and 4 consecutive. You cant deny that they are in fact the best.
@bjbjbzz They are the best, BUT the are still vastly over-rated. They are not invincible, not by a longshot. If they were, they wouldn't have a losing record to the Pac-10 since 1998. And guess what? LSU and Florida both beat OSU and Oklahoma, the two biggest bowl game chokers in the BCS era. And Alabama? They looked like shit against a true freshman at the helm of Texas' offense. And just because they have won the most BCS NCGs does not make them the best. It simply means that the BCS is shit.
@ianharwood Winning the most championships doesn't mean that your the best. Makes sense.
And looked like shit? One good quarter by one of the highest recruited QB's in the land. And Colt Mccoy couldn't even take a good dose of the SEC. The reason why the SEC is so good, is because they are on the hot bed for recruiting, and that is a fact.
@bjbjbzz When you are winning the most championships in a flawed system, it means nothing.
And if you think that because a true freshman QB is good because he was highly recruited, you're absolutely wrong. It takes time and experience for a QB to grow. And the SEC does have the best recruiting classes. But does that always translate into success? No.
@ianharwood I'm pretty sure winning 6 of 12 BCS national championships translates into success. And it's not their fault it's a flawed system, but they know how to win this flawed system. WIN
@bjbjbzz And what about the teams from other conferences that aren't even given a chance? I'm a USC and Pac-10 fan. USC's defense in 2008 would have strangled Tebow to death. Did they get a chance to prove it? No. And it's not just the Pac-10 that gets screwed. In 2008, FU and Oklahoma were both 12-1 and Utah was completely overlooked. I understand the whole tougher schedule argument (that does NOT, however, apply to USC, who was simply screwed over). Utah clobbered Alabama, only to finish #2.
@ianharwood (it is UF - not FU) UF fans would love for UF to play USC. I am not trying to be mean, but you should avoid "what if" scenarios in your arguments. Fantasy/fiction/religion is for children and weak minds. The Rose Bowl arrangement is what kept USC & Florida apart (two times). Your conference (as are most of them) is part of a corrupt, commercial bowl-system.
.
I hope that we can argue in a civilized manner.
.
I agree that USC is a great program. All real fans want a play-off.
@JuniperSprouts real fans of college football outside of the SEC and the Big XII have to deal in "what if" scenarios, because the SEC and the Big XII have bought their way into the NC game indefinitely.
It is what it is. If you disagree, you're simply too biased to know the difference. USC would have pounded the shit out of 2003 LSU, 2004 Auburn, 2008 FU (and yes, I know it's UF).
The Paco 10 is corrupt and the SEC is not... funny guy.
It's all about media hype. The SEC has a massive, disgusting contract with ESPN, like you said. It is for that reason why every day they tear into USC, and purposefully neglect to mention how FU has had 27 of its players arrested under Urban Meyer.
I'm sensing that you are not a fan of the BCS - that I can agree on with you.
I go to LSU so I am very familiar with SEC football. I try to call it as I see it and it seems to me that SEC refs cheat for their "alpha dog" teams.
@ianharwood Which is also very funny considering that Pac 10 refs tend to penalize their elite teams more, as a way of balancing games.
If we could simply go to a playoff system, then all would be well. Teams like Boise State last year and USC the year before could at least be given the chance to prove they belong.
@ianharwood@ianharwood I definitely agree that USC was not treated fairly. It seemed like the country/media just waited for an excuse to write them off. I am not an expert - just a fan. They terrorized teams in bowl games. It seemed like those years when they just dropped one game (Stanford, UW, etc) were years when USC should/could have played in the nc.
.
I was a huge fan of Pete Carroll. (Not anymore since he "sold out to the NFL")
@JuniperSprouts Haha wow. I figured you were an SEC fan, to be honest. I'm also a long-time USC fan.
And really it is fear and jealousy of USC. That is why the entire college football world is trying to unjustly give SC the death penalty. The SEC knows that their lack of offensive creativity would be devoured by SC, and they fear for their lives of playing the best bowl-game team in the nation.
And those random losses... heartbreaking, every one of them.
@JuniperSprouts I do not fully understand the extent of your argument....
.
I made sure to include "as are most of them" to include ANY conference that agrees with ANYTHING the BCS committee makes up.
.
The Rose Bowl was USC's biggest obstacle to playing the SEC teams you mentioned. Whether they would have "pounded the shit out of" them is a wondrous fantasy situation I can not debate.
.
The SEC and ESPN have signed a big $ contract. I know.
@bjbjbzz The system is flawed and you are biased into believing that it isn't because you're an SEC fan. Just know that the rest of the college football world isn't jealous like you think. We simply know that your success is a farce and are sick of the media's blatant favoritism towards the SEC. It's disgusting and it destroys the whole purpose of competition. It's a disgrace to college football.
@bjbjbzz anyway, this year Penn State beat LSU and Northwestern SHOULD have beaten Auburn. If you watched the Northwestern game, you'd know that some Auburn player criminally assaulted the NW kicker so they couldn't kick the game-winning field goal. Oh and that's the other thing: the SEC has the highest percentage of criminal-athletes, with Florida paving the way at a strong 26 arrests.
What is really ironic, the same year the remake of the longest yard came out and in the movie adam sandlers character says they schedule an ego booster game against some crappy school like applachian state.
Shoot if I announced for little schools like this on the radio i'd be yelling too. I can't blame him at all. I was at Mountaineer Field the day this happened and we all went beserk when they announced the score.
one of the greatest radio calls of all time. Everytime I hear "the mountaineers have just beaten the michigan wolverines" gets me amped. Thanx app for that moment.
@Atreyufolife thats cute lol, were the cocky ones? we had a shot at osu this year, but didnt get them in our schedule. if you wanna talk shit why dont you go ahead and beat osu? oh yeah... because your team sucks lol
Uh, they had won the D1-AA championship 2 or 3 times in a row. I fail to see how that makes them "bad"
And 2nd off, the announcers just saw their team pull off one of the greatest upsets in sports history. So sue them for going crazy. I did the exact same thing myself.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I know! What hell with the one dude just yelling? I can appreciate how huge of an upset is was; but can the guy show at least a modicum of professionalism? Can you imagine if Al Michaels had acted that way when the USA beat the Soviet hockey team in 1980? It would have ruined that classic highlight.
Absolutely! It never gets old. I remember running outside in my underwear and honking my horn with my entire apartment building screaming and celebrating along with me. My grandchildren are going to get so sick of hearing this story. "Ahhh grandpa not the football story AGAIN"
Haha, I don't particuarly like either team (I'm actually a Samford University graduate, one of App. St.'s SoCon opponents and a University of Alabama grad student), and this still gives me goosebumps. This was easily one of the greatest upsets in college football history, we just kept on staring at the TV, haha.
I don't particularly care for App. State, living in NC, but I respect the program and I especially hate Michigan. Greatest victory in ASU history, period. That includes the titles the program won.
i was in a bar at the time and i was watchin it for a while thinking UofM would destroy them and as soon as it was 31-20 i was sayin hold on this might be somethin... 34-32 wit 30 seconds left i knew there was somethin special about ready to happen

And if you think that because a true freshman QB is good because he was highly recruited, you're absolutely wrong. It takes time and experience for a QB to grow. And the SEC does have the best recruiting classes. But does that always translate into success? No.
ianharwood 1 year ago
@ianharwood I'm pretty sure winning 6 of 12 BCS national championships translates into success. And it's not their fault it's a flawed system, but they know how to win this flawed system. WIN
bjbjbzz 1 year ago
@bjbjbzz And what about the teams from other conferences that aren't even given a chance? I'm a USC and Pac-10 fan. USC's defense in 2008 would have strangled Tebow to death. Did they get a chance to prove it? No. And it's not just the Pac-10 that gets screwed. In 2008, FU and Oklahoma were both 12-1 and Utah was completely overlooked. I understand the whole tougher schedule argument (that does NOT, however, apply to USC, who was simply screwed over). Utah clobbered Alabama, only to finish #2.
ianharwood 1 year ago
@ianharwood (it is UF - not FU) UF fans would love for UF to play USC. I am not trying to be mean, but you should avoid "what if" scenarios in your arguments. Fantasy/fiction/religion is for children and weak minds. The Rose Bowl arrangement is what kept USC & Florida apart (two times). Your conference (as are most of them) is part of a corrupt, commercial bowl-system.
.
I hope that we can argue in a civilized manner.
.
I agree that USC is a great program. All real fans want a play-off.
JuniperSprouts 1 year ago
@JuniperSprouts real fans of college football outside of the SEC and the Big XII have to deal in "what if" scenarios, because the SEC and the Big XII have bought their way into the NC game indefinitely.
It is what it is. If you disagree, you're simply too biased to know the difference. USC would have pounded the shit out of 2003 LSU, 2004 Auburn, 2008 FU (and yes, I know it's UF).
The Paco 10 is corrupt and the SEC is not... funny guy.
ianharwood 1 year ago
@ianharwood What do you mean that the SEC and the Big12 have bought their way into the NC game indefinitely?
.
Please explain this to me? When did this begin? Under what circumstances? Who was involved?
JuniperSprouts 1 year ago
It's all about media hype. The SEC has a massive, disgusting contract with ESPN, like you said. It is for that reason why every day they tear into USC, and purposefully neglect to mention how FU has had 27 of its players arrested under Urban Meyer.
I'm sensing that you are not a fan of the BCS - that I can agree on with you.
I go to LSU so I am very familiar with SEC football. I try to call it as I see it and it seems to me that SEC refs cheat for their "alpha dog" teams.
ianharwood 1 year ago
@ianharwood Which is also very funny considering that Pac 10 refs tend to penalize their elite teams more, as a way of balancing games.
If we could simply go to a playoff system, then all would be well. Teams like Boise State last year and USC the year before could at least be given the chance to prove they belong.
ianharwood 1 year ago
@ianharwood @ianharwood I definitely agree that USC was not treated fairly.
(Not anymore since he "sold out to the NFL")
.
Did we just become best friends?
JuniperSprouts 1 year ago
@JuniperSprouts Haha wow. I figured you were an SEC fan, to be honest. I'm also a long-time USC fan.
And really it is fear and jealousy of USC. That is why the entire college football world is trying to unjustly give SC the death penalty. The SEC knows that their lack of offensive creativity would be devoured by SC, and they fear for their lives of playing the best bowl-game team in the nation.
And those random losses... heartbreaking, every one of them.
Friends with an SC fan? Sounds good to me
ianharwood 1 year ago
@ianharwood ...bear in mind that I attend LSU... I have met exactly 2 USC fans in my life... haha.
ianharwood 1 year ago
@JuniperSprouts I do not fully understand the extent of your argument....
.
I made sure to include "as are most of them" to include ANY conference that agrees with ANYTHING the BCS committee makes up.
.
The Rose Bowl was USC's biggest obstacle to playing the SEC teams you mentioned. Whether they would have "pounded the shit out of" them is a wondrous fantasy situation I can not debate.
.
The SEC and ESPN have signed a big $ contract. I know.
.
JuniperSprouts 1 year ago
@bjbjbzz The system is flawed and you are biased into believing that it isn't because you're an SEC fan. Just know that the rest of the college football world isn't jealous like you think. We simply know that your success is a farce and are sick of the media's blatant favoritism towards the SEC. It's disgusting and it destroys the whole purpose of competition. It's a disgrace to college football.
ianharwood 1 year ago
@ianharwood National championships resemble "success" to most fans I know.
JuniperSprouts 1 year ago
@bjbjbzz anyway, this year Penn State beat LSU and Northwestern SHOULD have beaten Auburn. If you watched the Northwestern game, you'd know that some Auburn player criminally assaulted the NW kicker so they couldn't kick the game-winning field goal. Oh and that's the other thing: the SEC has the highest percentage of criminal-athletes, with Florida paving the way at a strong 26 arrests.

What is really ironic, the same year the remake of the longest yard came out and in the movie adam sandlers character says they schedule an ego booster game against some crappy school like applachian state.

lmao. You can tell how bad Appalachian state was when they have commentators like that.
The one guy didn't even know how to call the game anymore. He just started screaming.
jdawgisback 2 years ago
Uh, they had won the D1-AA championship 2 or 3 times in a row. I fail to see how that makes them "bad"
And 2nd off, the announcers just saw their team pull off one of the greatest upsets in sports history. So sue them for going crazy. I did the exact same thing myself.

"Ahhh grandpa not the football story AGAIN"
cjcresawn 2 years ago 7
Haha, I don't particuarly like either team (I'm actually a Samford University graduate, one of App. St.'s SoCon opponents and a University of Alabama grad student), and this still gives me goosebumps. This was easily one of the greatest upsets in college football history, we just kept on staring at the TV, haha.
