As boring it is, electronic dance music is what electronic dance music is called, and it divides in a few big genres: trance, house, techno and breakbeat. House is not techno, although they can obviously overlap.

EDM consists of loop-based dance music while artists like Fuck Buttons, Depeche Mode, M83 and Boards of Canada and other experimental music, synthpop or such are in their own class. Electronic music consists of a huge variety of music, just like "guitar music" consists of everything from jazz to industrial.
