Keep in mind when removing the front head it changes the feel on the pedal. Generally a bit more bouncy and some times cause a vibration (buzz) against the beater.
An other trick instead of duct tape on the lugs is to use an old drum head but cut 99% of the head out so all you have left is the ring and a little bit of the head remaining so the bearing has something to grab. that way no damaged finish or residue.
