  • Wake up

  • The sanctioning mineral companies involvement in the Congo will not stop the violence

In general, foreign investment in a dirt poor country is a GOOD thing. It brings money and jobs to people that have neither. Do you think the country will be more stable with LESS jobs?

There is a bias among cetain groups that large corporations have evil intent.. But the plane fact is that they bring millions of dollars to millions of people in a counrty where most people live off of a dollar a day,

  • More capitalist casualties in another African country. I could go off about either the corporate suits or Africans and how they have a strong disregard for human life, but I will not. Change now corporate America.

  • "You can lead a horse to water..."

Honestly, only a few African tribes are capable of a democratic society. Good luck with the Congo, but it will be a while before anything ever changes there; not because of the demand for this or that, but pure and simple socio-political dynamic.

  • this is going to start with the shareholders...... not the companies. The biggest win capitalism has ever had over people /humanity is allowing them to become equity partners.

  • Wow! I never knew Congo was as bad as Detroit.

  • I was going to say who the hell are these people but i know 3 of them are on greys anatomy i love that show :)

  • Great video

  • I do honestly care about what's going on in the Congo, but think about it. The companies that have been buying conflict materials do not care because what they get is cheap and they don't experience the violence. For all they know what's going on in the Congo, might as well be in a whole other world.

  • The reason these humanitarian groups use actors is not because people are stupid and will do whatever they are told to do. Actors and "faces" speak up for such issues because their voice's are heard. Their voices hold weight and draw attention. People are a hell of a lot more interested in what Brad Pitt or (the lucious) Saffron Burrows says than your highschool history teacher that's a fact, and that's why celebrities are used for such campagins. Its a matter of pragmatism.

  • It's about time somebody started a movement to stop those abuses. I'm completely behind it.

  • I'm sure the actors all feel better after doing this, but can they be serious? How re you going to track minerals??

People chant 'Save Darfur!' Problem is, the only one way to do that would be to 'Invade Sudan!' Not with milk-toast blue helmets (who add to the rape/prostitution problem, not alleviate it). Western countries playing world policeman is a horrible solution, but there is no other. I've spent too many years, dealing with orphans and refugees in Uganda to believe anything else.

  • if you dont eat meat innocent animals will not have to die

  • too mainstreamish....

  • Comment removed

  • dont thank us for watching thank you for making this video and informing the masses so if you are watching this video please do something to help i know i will..

  • If there were no computers or cellphones and virtually no demand for the said minerals, there would still be war in the Congo. However, I do support the charge that these manufacturers need to clean up their supply chain.

    ~ An African.

  • I admire the cause but I really dislike videos with actors telling me what to do.

  • All they are asking is to avoid overbuying if its not broken dont buy a new one, please be respectfull for other ppl lives.

  • Where is the United Nations? Are they not taking responsibility, why? The UN can send diplomats to negotiate fair trade policies, why is it that every time there is a problem in the world, it falls on the USA to resolve the issue. Fugettaboutit, No More Money For Other Peoples Problems, lets solve our own first.

  • Want hope? Call Obama.

  • This is great. I had no idea. Thanks for making this!!!!!

  • I don't know what's so controversial or complicated about this?

Don't buy unnecessary computers/cell phones/diamond jewlrey and don't add to the deaths of innocent people.

    Very simple.

  • cool

  • i dont know what are you talking about, you are a ...

  • Raising awareness is good and all, but just because people KNOW about something doesn't mean that they're going to DO jack diddly.

What ever happened to blood diamonds, by the way? Or AIDS? Is Darfur a first world country now because Bono did a charity concert for them last year or so, when caring about Darfur was the "in" thing?

    -Tabris

  • Exactly! And in reference to Congo, some UN officials have actually taken part in some really awful things done to Congonese women and girls. I totally agree with you- we need something new.

  • Like rustyangel27370 pointed out, people have no idea where the resources for the products they purchase on a daily basis are coming from, nor what type of impact they have on native peoples. The sooner we wake up to the fact that we live in a land of limited resources; that everything we consume has a real and direct impact on not only lives but government; that conservation is a necessity not a choice; then and only then can a suitable platform for a lasting peace be established.

  • well the consumers can try and do what they want, which for sure is good, no questions asked, i do still have hope in the people power. Yet without the governments doing their share, there is only so much people can do. If governments still illicitly or not, buy and sell weapons to the region, as well as other important raw materials, then... . Things need to change dramatically.

  • Can we also ask these celebrities to give up there mansions and 50 car garages?

  • They're not asking you to "give up" cell phones and laptops, they're just asking you to help convince companies to stop buying conflict minerals via signing a pledge.

  • Good point.

Celebrities and Hollywood are not environment friendly.

Its social impact isn´t friendly too.

    :(

  • Awesome question ..

Let's see they answering it ..

  • These kinds of causes, while good on paper and certainly pull the right heart strings, are ridiculous to be blunt. They mention tungsten in the video as a precious mineral used in making cell phones. Tungsten is also the key element in making light bulbs. Do you guys have any idea how many millions of cell phones and light bulbs are out there? It would be cheaper and smarter to deal with the criminals in the Congo than with the consumer based on the sheer volumes we're talking about

  • You know... some people say that Saffron Burrows looks like a skinny fish, but 4 me she's HHHHHHHHHHHHHHOT!

  • Why actors? Why always actors? Has the not-for-profit industry still not realized that associating actors with your cause only ever serves the function of criminally undermining it? In the case of a cause this serious, at this stage in the game, they should be ashamed of themselves.

  • @keelorenz: I agree with you 100%. The reason they use actors is because they know that most (not all) people are mindless robots that go along with the population and are influenced by meaningless principles such as "Brad Pitt thinks it's a good cause, so it must be good". Most people just don't tend to think for themselves...it requires too much, well, thought

  • This is the same type of movement as the "blood diamond" effort. Good cause.

  • ive lived in western congo (kinshasa) for almost two years,to tell the truth all this sounds like something happening somewere else, thats a major part of the problem, the countrys too large, the governing too centered at the capital, and the problem spot is an area boadering 4 other countries,a real solution will have to be internal,but.....Good "effort" anyway.

  • who's the english actress?

  • they aren't asking us to stop using cell phones!!! they want us to demand that our cell phone companies trace where the minerals are coming from...BIG DIFFERENCE PEOPLE

  • its a good cause, I support it.

  • It's an intentional policy of the Elite to keep these wars going in the name of population control. Population control in the name of stemming climate change.

  • Wow it must be really easy to get behind something when you're already RICH!

  • eat my arse, NATO troops in afgan province fighting for life and you want me to donate to a corrupt and dying state in africa.

I say no to you celebrity!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • "Enlightened" celebrities make me sick. What would we do without them. We wouldn't have even known to vote for Obama if it weren't for them!

  • How many people are acctully gonna give up cell phones and comps for somthing thats happening 9000 miles away most stupid people dont even know whats going on in there own country

  • you don't have to give up anything, just get your cell phone and computer manufacturers to stop being lowlifes and get the materials from a decent source.

  • Furthermore, the United Nations, I believe, ought to have more power to act and intervene in Congo, as well as other trouble spots around the world, plus more weapons and soldiers with which to carry out such intervention. The UN, must be allowed to put an end to the one nation monopoly to be the world police. In addition to such changes, a dialogue should be opened between the UN and the EU in order to begin creating a more unified world.

  • If I am to give up my electronics, would those actors be out of business as well??

What good would signing a pledge do? NOTHING! That's about as "in-action" as you can get by "doing" something.

  • maybe real actor, but not this no-talent TV actors

  • When actors speak out about problems in Africa, they always put the blame on you, the average person. In this case, if you use or own a cell phone or computer, you're allegedly to blame for the violence in Africa. The warlords and their henchmen, who are actually perpetuating the violence, are apparently innocent.

  • dude, i dont know if you listened to them, but millions of people have died over there and the children are living in a hell that most of us cant even understand. the actors may look like deuchbags but they feel the responsibility to use their fame to try to help others. i dont know if you know the song "us and them" but it applies here, you should give it a listen

  • People do help and adopt people in this country. What is going on in Darfur and the Congo is something beyond poverty and violence. Where you are born should not determine whether you live or die. Go there and see....

  • war is an ugly thing and i feel for congo realy, but no one didn't lift the finger when serb agression raged for 5 years in croatia and bosnia; bosnia, where the spark was lit for the II world war, btw!

  • I have to admit I had no idea of the purchasing practices for metal of some of these companies. I agree they should be made accountable for how they do business and how that affects people who are victims of a criminal war such as the one in Congo. This country has been in some kind of internal conflict for more than half a century. This needs to stop. The United Nations, I believe, ought to have more power to intervene and more weapons and people with whcihc to carry out an intervention.

  • people who are simply minded follow celebrities. it's like all these people who follow celebs on twitter

  • I was not even aware of the metal purchasing practices of some of these companies. Yes, I agree there must be a change. Comoanies must be made accountable that their actions contribute heavily to an already torn country. Although, I fee that the situation in congo is so tragic that there are other things that must be done in addition to getting on the metal deals. COngo has been a war torn country for the past fifty years or more. It is time to put an end to the people suffering.

  • I wonder if they see the irony that in order to shoot, edit, and upload this video, they were using conflict minerals?

  • @wstdmflms

I was thinking the same thing.

  • The point of the movement is not to boycott all electronics, but to push for electronic companies to stop using conflict minerals in their products.

  • I read about this in vanity fair 2yrs ago I think. To get certain parts for cell phones, they go there and buy this metal from the locals who will do anything to get it, including killing all the gorillas and anyone who gets in their way. The vanity fair article kinda hinted that we need to stop changing cell phones every month and maybe that would help things over there? who knows?

  • gorillas

  • gorillas!?

  • I thought about upgrading my cellphone which is two years old. Now I think I will use this phone until it breaks before buying a new one.

  • Where are the Rachael Corrie's when you need them??

  • could they just hold the camera still? About 10 years ago some director told his camera man to move the camera around during the shot. Now it seems that every one has to shake the camera. Please stop shaking the camera. It does not make the shot more authentic: the whole film crew is standing there watching the cameraman shake the camera to make it look like a remote shot How is that authentic? Please god make them stop shaking the camera.

  • ooh noes it are actors lets all obay.

  • whoa

  • This is a true tragedy, but consumerism and cell phones may not be the problem. Some quick research shows that China has 75% of the Tungsten reserves. Also, Tin is much more plentiful, the Congo doesn't have a major supply in terms of a high % of the world wide supply. The question now is: Is there a problem?

  • I understand what they are trying to do but do they really thing that not buying those minerals from the Congo will stop those animalistic men from raping those women????

    I don't think so.

They will find something else to start a war over .

  • Wait wait wait. Who's terrorizing the miners? Sony, HP, Dell? Why drag electronics manufacturer's names through the mud? Does this solve anything? Should they quit buying from the Congo? Will that worsen the crisis or help it? Are the Congo people angry with Radio Shack, or grateful? What will the terrorists do if the USA stops buying these materials from Congo? Are there other options? Who's idea was this? How about dome details, Hollywood?

  • wow

  • ... what?

  • why the hell are you giving shit? just watch after your own stuff... seriously - enough is enough!

  • now go get your shinebox

  • money will solve everything???

  • You people are all clueless. All problems in this world derive from greed. To find the culprits you need to find the greediest people alive. They met this weekend in Athens Greece behind a heavily secured perimeter. They meet every year. What do they discuss? No media is allowed to report even though several media types are usually present. Wake up people and research Bilderberg 2009. Timothy Geitner, David Patreus, James Jones,Donald Grahm(CEO Wash Post) attended,no mention in their Paper.

  • lol

  • This is no better than the drug war, as long as there is a demand for the cell phone, this will go on. Poverty and corruption in the country that fuel's this war.

  • Yes but we can be careful consumers, for example don't buy a cell phone unless the one you have is completely dead. Do you really need a cellphone with a camera, a radio and I don't know what? Cell phone industry is flourishing because we fuel it.

  • oh yeah, i want all the latest gadgets in ma cell! i actually got three - nokia n95, n96 and 6220 classic and i want more!

  • This is not THE solution, but it IS part of it. Our lives are connected to people in the Congo, Kenya, China, New York...everywhere. Don't lose the message and the reality that it conveys because of the mouths that you hear it from...the reality of the conneciton between our consumption practices and Congolese injustice is true regardless of who is telling you about it...whether you think they are hypocritical or not. Life's easier when someone else is to blame...how are you involved?

  • this is going at the problem from the wrong end

change ur goverments if ur looking for long lasting changes.

  • so my phone isnt RoHS compliant? :P

  • I wonder how much these "concerned" actors got paid for this commercial...

  • Funny you should say. I was thinking the other day, if every celebrity ( famous actors and artists and tv hosts who earn a lot of money) would give ten or even 1% of what they earn in just one year a lot of people could have been helped or even saved by now.

  • there's a facebook groups trying to get the vatican to get their cardinals and bishhops to give up a ring or two to help fight famine!!!!! lolo.......it'll never happen!!!

  • yeah, how simplistic and one sided can you be? Shedding a few rings by the cardinals of Rome would not make much difference unless we all do! If that is the case, why don't you tell your own president to spend less on evening trips with Air Force One to Chicago to take his wife out to dinner to their favorite restaurant, or other things he, obviously, squanders money on all the while interfering with everyone's business and asking the nation to sacrifice.

  • its funny how these kinds of celeb videos always have less views than... "new scandalous miley cyrus pics" and such.

Personally, i don't think that the world is gonna really do anything serious about this. Africa has become a dependent continent to the rest of the world, other than the untapped oil supply, the western world sees the baron continent as nothing but a liability. Few wish to help, while most really just don't care!

  • If we embargoed the Congo, then the hippies will claim we are starving Africa and responsible for their poverty. If we send in troops to correct the situation then we are evil colonialist white oppressors who want to steal their minerals. And, if we just let them run their own affairs and buy their goods then we get hippies telling us how bad we are for doing so.

  • Sir, you are right on! If we just send food then the far left and hippies will say we need peace keepers, however they'll say we , americans are occupationist after a week or two. Whats the difference between U.N peacekeepers and U.S troops in a country. The far left and hippies will not understand that the U.N acts like a turtle and that they are so corrupt t ..wait what does the far left care the U.N can do no wrong. We the U.S are the evil ones and they'll find some way to make it our fault

  • sandra oh me love you in sideway

  • So what is REALLY going on here in the Congo, the government doing something down there? Got their celebrities doing their PR work.

  • When do these actors come clean on the kids from slumdog millionair?

    Gotta love Hollywood!

  • booo hoooo....hey hollywood u got all the answers, fix it. me, i'm gonna help my own heighborhood first.

  • totally agree somthing needs to be done but they are all using cell phones and computers ... when they start using tin cans the an call me on them. ok i will text you on my conflict cell phone.

  • the "______ for change" phrase earns all vids a 1 *.

  • 301views and 103comments wow

  • The people who live in the Congo, & elsewhere in Africa, are in a quagmire of corruption which runs deep. To place the blame on computers and cell phone "conflict minerals" just hurts companies who have legitimate business which help Africa's often unstable regions.

  • They arent placing the blame on computer companies, they're asking to help petition the companies to buy from other sources.

  • Companies that are buying from shady dealers will continue to do so because they will go for the cheapest supply materials. There is no real way to tell if companies will abide by what they do because of a petition. There are also many ways to help people in the Congo if the powers that be will allow it.

  • Changing The World, a little bit at a time

  • Why the hell are celebrities so obsessed with Africa?

  • It seems to me they mentioned more the minerals than they did the people being killed? How are electronic companies going to solve this? by cleaning up supply chains? What are they going to do? I always find it interesting when actors get involved more than politicians. Like Rwanda very little intervention by US the media Hollywood except for Hotel Rwanda and that was genecide!

  • not good not good

  • i don't know

  • saffron burrows is GORGEOUS

  • I think that hundreds of actors could generate hundreds of millions, if not a billion, dollars to fight a conflict. You all can take the $8 I spend at the movie and go to the Congo to end the crisis.

  • I saw a reportage on Discovery about the Congolese women and the rapes they've suffered. I have never seen such a dramatic and unhuman behaviour towards any human being. The authorities do not charge anyone with rape. If the victim dies, eventually, the man is held in prison for 3 days ! If I'll ever involve myself in charity actions, Congo will be the one who I feel it needs help to understand how to become human again.

  • holy shit its the comedian

  • cool!

  • he he he :))

    watch?v=ytu4pfBuUJU

  • There's more views on your soccer video game tutorial than this, that should say something about the interests of the public. :'[

  • I keep seeing all of these projects and fundraisers for different parts of Africa and I'm thinking, if most of the continent of Africa is in dire need, why isn't the UN taking charge down there and straightening this stuff out. Nobody has a problem with helping, but you can't help but think 50 years from now, they will be asking for more money for the same problems.

  • maybe they havent found the oil yet

  • Funny... most are actors and actresses in Grey's Anatomy. :-)

  • why greys anatomy people?

  • what people probably also don't realize is that solve the problem with the "3 T's" and they'll fight over diamonds, solve that they'll fight over tribal issues, solve that they'll fight over food. and once we solved every conceivable problem for them (as if it is our job) the will fight to start a new fight. once the Brits gave it back they went to shit, i think that is suggestive

We're workin with the head of Bogo Lights (friends father) Exxon (cuz like half the ppl at my school have parents in oil business) n with Dekembe Mutumbo n we've already donated a tona clothes.

We're goin this summer like 10 ppl n help build a well and distribute first aid materials etc.

soo umm im doing my part :D

xcept u made it sound like really scary so tht kinda dissuades groups like ours from goin.

  • Go (I was there for 3 years and came back in one piece). Dikembe Mutombo has nothing to do with Eastern DRC where the rape and mineral war take place. He just built a luxury hospital in Kinshasa which is thousands of kms from where the war is.

  • I was there for a couple hours. Then we walked back into uganda

  • Were you really? Seriously??

  • Ya think?

  • What kind of logic you say? Oh "taht" logic of yours is like so wise and smart!

Maybe that guy you are talking about was not the wise kind african i was refering to. You seem to have no clue and all u can do is troll around with your big boy F words. Go play outside kid.

  • Isn't it a bit ironic and even hypocritical that these actors are raising awareness about "conflict minerals" that are used in cell phones and computers yet they made a video for the Internet which can only be viewed using a computer or cell phone! LoL, WTF???

  • Hahahaha thats a good one. Indeed... sometimes i wonder are these people using their brain AT ALL?

  • It's called a target audience. Most people buying cell phones and computers are most likely upgrading and not buying there first one.

  • ironic, a little; hypocritical, no.

It's called a target audience. Most people buying new computers and cell phones are buying upgrades, not there first one.

  • well fair enough there's irony there, but what did would be the alternatives? tv-commercials i guess, maybe they have those too, and then there's... FLYERS! of COURSE!! :p the best way to spread word these days is like they did it here i guess..

  • But it's effective. How else are we to spread the news of what is going on? Why not use the technology that feeds and isolotates the individual to tell them what they need to know? its not the cell or computer thats the issue, it's the stuff inside it.

  • they aren't trying to stop people from making computers or cell phones. they just want these companies to show some ethics and not buy materials at the cost of human life. If there are no buyers then no war will break out. Thats the idea at least. But the chances of that happening are almost zero.

  • I never once thought about the material that make up our technology. I had no idea that they may play a part in the horrors faced in congo. I will sign the petition.

How can anyone not feel empathy torwards the suffering faced by our fellow man. skin color does not matter. They are people.

  • Aren't these actors millionaires? Don't they have other actor friends who are millionaires? Why don't they all get together and do it themselves. I think that hundreds of actors could generate hundreds of millions, if not a billion, dollars to fight a conflict. You all can take the $8 I spend at the movie and go to the Congo to end the crisis.

  • Agreed. Couldn't have said it better myself.

  • Its not about the money. even if we gave cell phone and computer companies money so that they could get the materials from a safer source, don't you think they would still go behind our backs to get it cheaper from the congo? and then they'd still overcharge us, it's called business.

  • Comment removed

  • thats the only problem with all this, we hear celebrities telling us to go out, make a difference, donate our money, but they get paid for public announcments like this, plus they get publicity and a good rep. But like I said, its not about the money, and by giving third world countries money, we're only making them more dependant on us, or giving their dictators funding without even knowing it. And these celebrities dont even realize it.

  • How about all you rich actors just buy a few hundred million dollars worth of small arms for the civilians? It sure does make it a lot tougher to oppress a people who are better armed than you.

  • 50% of comments here "that's not our problem" "go die nigger" ok then don't click on this video

  • these comments prove in what sick and alienated world we are all living in. the biggest thing that the people in so called "civilized" world have lost is the empathy. and the simple fact that they were born in usa or europe gives them the right to judge other people and ignore their suffering in order not to perturb their own miserable peace of mind. i had the privilege to go there and meet the people of congo. among them i found much more love and friendship that i ever felt in my own europe.

  • Gee Occiden89, u dont say. Where would u ever get a crazy idea like that?!?!

  • who really has the time to care more important things to worry about to many do gooders with to much money and time on there hands maybe if they had real problems like not being able to pay bills and keep a roof over there head they might not care so much the world is a mess look after you and yours and let the rest do the same its time that nature took its coures the weak faid away the strong carry on you just get to a point when you just dont care anymore that time has come

  • P.S. This might be the most useless cause in the history of useless causes!

  • Amazing comments. The video basically tells you how to solve every problem the detractors complain about: US financial crisis, racial issues, political issues, actor activists, but they all miss it. What amazing ignorance.

  • Interesting all the ignorant, mindless racism on this video.

It's almost like people are so ashamed of themselves that they can only say these kinds of things on the internet.

  • “Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.” Romans 6:13

We have are own problems right here and that's where we need to focus our attention.

  • next time I need an in depth analysis of geopolitical conflicts, I'm gonna ask Carrot Top, since Hollywood actors are such deep thinkers.

  • We computer and cellphone users should not think we are gods or angels. Maybe the rapists and murderers there need to be... or maybe we should murder them ourselfs too.

Or we should just sit and watch how they evolve... sure it is going to take a while (wake up already africa, we all only need one wise, kind African man to fix most of these problems).

  • It's no worse then the Somalian pirates or conflict diamonds.

  • Sooo....It's MY fault the niggers hack each other to death and rape women like it's going out of style? Of course! I have "conflict minerals" in my phone, what was I thinking?!

  • The same minerals are used in game consoles. Good luck getting kids to give those up. Seriously though, I realy dont give a fuck about women in congo. What do they want, for everyone to stop using cell phones and computers? Im sure as hell not. I dont care how many congo women get raped or killed, im not giving up my shit for them.

  • Screw u guys im going hooome
