According to reports during testing in 1985, Toivonenen took Jonathan Palmer round a rain soaked Estoril in a time that would have qualified for 6th in the wet F1 qualifying that year. Markku Alen said the S4 had 600 bhp by the end of '86.
next t the metro 6r4 the best car ever made i dont care about stupid scratchy shiny fragile lambourgini or porche puke this the dalta s4 is a real mans car
The problem was an extremely high power/weight ratio for the tires, suspension, electronics and breaks available at those days. Toivonen said once, "this car runs faster than my brain!".
it had be very dificult for driver who all live driving RWD cars..then they must sit to 4WD car. they must teach all from beginig no? example how to make drive thru corners. and for example from 037 to s4 its crazy--that power. wot car was more dangerous 037 or s4 when they crached? i read somewhere that allmost all crashes in 037 end with dead. crash death, not crash life.
I read that for the transition between RWD to AWD pilots of the S4 needed to gradually distribute the power. At first 75% rear 25% front later 60/40 and at then 55/45.
rofl.. 20 years of tech would kill them 4 sure.. but better leave them R.I.P. cuz they where killing us, i seen the toivonen incident and i had enough of rallye for long time :/
I think Suzuki Escudo Pikes Peak is something what modern group b cars would be like. Escudo is over 10 years old but its the first thing that comes to my mind when thinking group b.
855 kg and 987 hp.
Delta S4 is the ultimate group b car and my favorite.
imagine how ridiculous a modern group b car could be, now that they have electro-hydraulic paddle gearbox's and super grippy purpose built tires, it would be sooooo deadly....one off and your life would be done, there would be a driver death every rally.
This makes kind of sense, but you have to also consider how much more safety rally cars are nowdays even if they would be b-group killers. Back at the day they were mostly made of fibreglass I pressume. Like torches waiting for fire.
Modern b-group cars would be sick fast with power steering, CPU controlled power transmission and suspension. Curve speed would be drasticly increased compared to 80s cars. Would be kind of interesting to see one:)
Leon, I don't think light weight makes a car unsafe, it's a matter of having the right hardware to cope with the amount of power this cars produced. They were producing 440hp at this early stage and evolved to over 500 in the following months. The problem was the way the power arrived. Back then, the suspensions, tires, and brakes weren't nearly as good as today, and there weren't any electronic gadgets to keep it under control.
Imagine if that Lancia ECV got to get a chance at racing...
its sort of weird watching toivonen test driving the lancia delta s4 during its rally testing, the very same kind of car that he would be killed in several months later during the tour de course rally of 1986.

Anyone know what's the name of the artist and the name of the song that's in this video?
Thank you!

Ashford & Simpson is the artist and the name of the song is 'Solid as a rock'. It was a quite big hit in the eighties.

Removing the restrictors on the WRC cars today would have made them group b killers ;)
Just look at the old Carlos Sainz car we have here in Norway, Stian Hafsengen's Ford Escort WRC with 770 bhp.
Almost like a rallycross car with a WRC cars technology.

Well I know for a fact that the Ford RS 200 was capable of over 750 bhp and that wasn´t the most powerful Grp B car!

The music is fine, kiddo. This video was made in the 80s.
I grew up watching this stuff, but mainly the Audi Quattros.

no the music is a bit ugly, even the 80s had some good music

I agree, the B cars were dangerouss because of the light weight construction. Not because of their huge engine power or their rear weight design.

Power steerin isn't neccesasary on rear engined cars like the Lancia S4.
I doubt they'd be fast thru corners if made safer/heavier
LeonSzillard 4 years ago
The Lancia Delta S4 HAD power steering and was mid-engined.
sasinfantry 4 years ago
Only the street cars (S4 stradale) had power steering. Rally S4's didn't, and were rear-engine with almost 60% of the car's weight on the rear axle.
