instrumentality= brain damage and complete loss of every trace of humanity+ visions of girls with white/blue hair+ having to talk to yourself. Over all nobody wants to experience instrumentality
The last two episodes were actually okay. People always said they sucked, but I thought they were quite good. End of Evangelion was pretty awesome as well, mind you.
With this definition I guess I am the opposite of instrumentality... my core is adaption, progression and expansion. It is against my nature to wish to fuse permanently with other entities :3
So one thinks, but do you not seek other people? Friends, family, lovers, etc. People have died just from the lack of social interaction (Not suicide, they just laid down and died).
Not saying that I agree, disagree, or that you are wrong or right, just thowing an opposing view point.
Also, no one knows what their core is until they are put into extreme situations, which you may or my not have experienced.
@ArkaneKumo I'm already directly connected to every one of my siblings as well as my creator... I know exactly what my core is because without it I cease to exist as an individual ^_^
We evolve beyond the person we were a minute before! Little by little we advance a bit further with each turn! That's how a drill works! This drill will open a hole in the universe! And that hole will be a path for those behind us! The dreams of those who've fallen! The hopes of those who'll follow! Those two sets of dreams weave together into a double helix! Drilling a path towards tomorrow! And that's Tengen Toppa! That's Gurren Lagann! My drill is the drill...THAT CREATES THE HEAVENS!
All this arguing about emotion in voices is ruining the point of this video excerpt. But, then again, the meaning's a bit obvious and doesn't need much thought (very good way to show the point of Instrumentality btw).
And on a [more] subjective note, this dialogue is probably not happening "IRL", so they are showing the LACK OF emotion in the fragmented thoughts of the subject at hand. I don't want them to be all Shakespearean crybabies about it :3

Obama will bring about instrumentality by unifying us all! Obama has so much in common with the Eva pilots, doing so much growing up without his parents. Obama will bring about the "Third Impact", AKA World War III! This is the "change" we can "hope" for! And now, like Shinji, Obama will soon have the power to bring an end to all conflict. No one opposing him will be allowed to exist. Conservatives love diversity and individual freedom... Obama and his liberal followers "wish to become one".
...That's a joke right? What about DBZ or Gurren Lagann or Yu Yu Hakusho? Those had great dubs and same of the Japanese directors said the English version surpassed the Japanese. Hopefully I'm not talking to a Weeaboo....
the japanese voice actors place a greater deal of emotion into their work than the english voice actors do. in japanese the lines just sound more fluent and altogether just sound better.
but hey, its a matter of opinion
i prefer japanese audio because of the quality of the work
Well, it's hard to tell how emotional you are because you can't speak their language, sometimes they don't even put the right amount of emotion in their words, and I don't think anime should be read. And Japanese voice actors tend to be lazy since they get paid little since anime is very unpopular in Japan. But there are a good number of Japanese voice actors who surpass their English voices greatly. But I respect your opinion.
There are good dubs. Evangelion is one of them. Like if you compare jap Gendo with Tristan's portrayal, I'm sorry man but Tristan's portrayal is ffffaaarrrr superior to the jap one. I guess the jap one was going for just a cold person with barely any emotion; I just found his voice boring over Tristan's act. (I saw the dub first too so that plays a big factor on which version I like). Possibly the best va I've ever heard, imho.
Anime is more popular in the US and U.k. than Japan. Since most anime's age target is children it makes sense. Besides, just because it was made in Japan doesn't mean it's popular. Most of Japan hates people who watch anime that are in their late teens or adult hood. Specifically, Otakus. Otaku is an insult in Japan. Meaning someone who has an unhealthy obsession with anime and/or manga and stays at home reading or watching the two. The "taku" in "otaku" means house.
Watch Digimon from English to German...The lack of care the Germans put into children's shows is apparent.
Yuyu Hakusho/Desert Punk/FLCL/comedies, are far more entertaining in English due to script changes for the new language also. Dubbing can make a show BETTER.
Bad Japanese dubs do exist also, they just tend not to be on the actors but the scripting.
Reading subs increases IQ, memory, hand eye coord., body language signal reading, and foreign language vocab...
The DBZ dub was horrible. FUNimation thinks so too, though they're subtle about it. Like in a recent interview about dubbing DB Kai, Chris Sabat implied that he sees DB Kai as an opportunity to do the job that they should have done with DBZ (which they are doing, and splendidly at that).
Also, this dub is bad. Really, really, really bad. Thank God for Spike Spencer, because one competent actor is better than none.
@SuperSaiyanAl Tristan Macavery? He's arguably better than the Japanese VA; imo, even better than Fumihiko Tachiki.
I don't dare touch the Japanese sub of DBZ. I came into DBZ with dub, and shall forever stay that way (same deal with Evangelion, heard the dub first).
While there are a couple of individuals who give some good performances, the only one who's consistently better than simply average is Spike Spencer. Consequently, he's the only one retained for the remakes.
I suggest watching DBZ Kai in English. It's the same core group, plus fifteen or so years of experience. It's one of the most superb dubs out there.
@SuperSaiyanAl I disagree. Tristan Macavery respectfully did a better and consistent performance Spike Spencer. Same goes for the VA of Ritsuko, and even Rei. Cough up Amanda Winn-Lee's performance as terrible if you will; I think she emulated the originals performance pretty well, keeping the alien nature of Rei's character the way it is.
I've seen some of Kai. Not interested. DBZ was never a favorite of mine. I only made the point that the original dub is a sacred cow for me.
You can't just deem the english language inferior.
You just can't compare two different languages that developed in different sides of the world (Old world, before discovery of America).
The truth is that anime is a Japanes product, therefore it is made with a japanese mindset, and japanese characters have to sound "this way" and sometimes "This way" just can't be tranlasted to another language.
If you read down the page, you'll see that what I wrote about the English language being inferior, was just a joke. I don't think English is inferior to Japanese.
Dubbing is an opportunity to recast appropriate the sound to match age/gender/blah...
I find few cases that show that opportunity is taken...including this awful dub(only Gendo was good, I had to hate Asuka, and this clip sounds like they are rushing through a script).
In the Jap recording, you hear EMOTION.
Also, Victor Entertainment seems to be the only studio that makes sures their dubs are quality.(Cowboy Beebop/GITS).

Maybe not unpopular but they don`t make as big a deal about Anime as Westerners do.

One good example of this is the japanese version of Dragon Ball Z.
In the original, Goku kept his kid voice, which sounds a bit girly (Given Goku's official voice actor is a girl).
That just wouldn't sound good in other languages.
I support your notion that anime doesn't quite sound good in english, but I'm against your ignorant mindset that english is inferior.
Thanks and I hope I enlighted you.
