Nice to hear the original. Carole King, one of the greats too, and a nice person! What instrument is playing the solo on the break, one do wonder. As to their looks, they were kids in the early '60s, nothing special and hadn't had the Hollywood Treatment, SO WHAT?!
The British Invasion bands were in touch with black American music, and Peter Noone and the boys made sure we heard this song. I remember the Cookies, but I wouldn't know this original version without Herman's Hermits.
This song was written by Carol King and Gerry Goffin. If you listen closely, you can hear Carol in the background. She also arranged this and played piano. It was recorded at MiraSound studios in New York..
I like this FAR better than Herman's Hermits. Great arrangement and feel, nice tight harmony by the Cookies, like the sax in the bridge, it's a more relaxed highly synchopated beat. It sounds like a happy-girl, hand-clapping song.
@oyeman Ugly is never in fashion, and face it, these mutts were built for radio. I just purchased the Cookies CD on-line, which is not easy to do, and I treasure it.
Beautiful song, beautifully rendered, but it has to be said. If you dunked these girls in the river you'd be skimming ugly for a week.

With all due respect to Hermans Hermits, their version doesn't even come close to this original. Great tune and good post.

It just occurred to me why this superb song wasn't a huge hit originally. Look at them. They look like fledgling transvestites.

@problem49 Video killed the radio star, eh? Anyway people on old photos almost always look ugly, what with changes in fashion and all.
