  • "Traditional marriage?" Varies. Lakota chief Crazy Horse had one or two male spouse(s) and many other Native American nations also have had what we now call same-sex marriages. Ethnographers have documented this. Some examples: Omahas, Zapotecs, Mohaves, Crow, Hidatsa, Ojibwa, Winnebago, Yuma and Timucua. Other cultures too. In 17th century Fukian Province China, same-sex marriages between gay men seem to have been common. And in West Africa, "woman marriage[s]"--practiced by many nations.

  • I've seen Blackwell owned so may times. Watch him try to argue w/Christopher Hitchens. Being a Black, right wing conservative will never help black or white people. Look at Michael Steele. In addition. if you poll a large section of black people, they are afraid of homosexuals and hate them. They affected the failure of prop.8. If Obama comes out as FOR same sex marriage he will lose many black supporters he had in 2008. The dude is in trouble.

  • I did not understand Blackwell's apparrent put down "they got the joke and the

    American people got >'

  • i think chris is right somewhat, marriage equality is going to be on the ballot, but this time marriage equality will have alot more support

  • @soundscape718 I never said that all blacks are religious retards!!?!! 1/2 the blacks kids at my school either have or wouldn't mind having gay friends. what do you mean by you feel ignored? I'm really curious about that

  • I am embarassed that this dude is #AfricanAmerican

  • @soundscape718 I will take your word that homophobia is a problem in black community. I do believe that manyt people, regardless of race, assume that any advancement in civil rights is a zero-sum-game. It is understandable that blacks, who have had it worse than most groups in this country, would be sensative to seeing LGBT persons make civil rights gains, especially if they have strong religious beliefs. Ken Blackwell, of any person, should know better than this.

  • Why does Matthews have to have representatives of hate groups on his show?

  • "....Florida, Norf Carolina..."

  • This is all the more reason for people to be involved. Just look at what happened in New York. The Human Rights Campaign ran advertisements to change public opinion on gay marriage. The governor and local politicians work hard to build a coalition to get the bill passed. None of this happens if people do not get involved. I wonder how many people who post in favour of gay rights really belong and contribute to the Human Rights Campaign. Or ever contact a politician.

  • Also, since monsieur Blackwell is in favour of putting the rights of minorities up for public vote (a highly UN-traditional, UN-conservative and UN-American phenomena), let's put the rights of racial and religious minorities up for vote next, see how that turns out. After all, says Blackwell, if it's the will of the majority, it must be moral and right (forgetting that less than a century ago the will of the people in certain areas of the U.S. would've had him hanging by his neck from a tree).

  • @ExaggeratedElegy That is the obvious irony of this interview. Why Chris Matthews did not bring that up is not clear. It seems to me if he is going to bring on groups like FRC to discuss this issue than it is necessary to discuss the obvious logical dissonance of the spokeman's position.

  • Bayard Rustin.

  • Talking about job creation by Obama is a red herring. FOCUS ON THE ISSUE

  • The only thing dumber than gay marriage is straight marriage... marriage laws are discriminatory against single americans.

  • I don't think gay marriage is going to be a wedge issue like it was in 2004. There's a hell of a lot more shit going on now with jobs, the economy, and the deficit that I don't think people are gonna give a fuck about gay marriage; most people that is. its unfortunate that gay marriage is a lot more important to people who are against it than to people who are for it.

  • I just dont understand how we even have the right to vote on whether two people can get married or not. That just bothers me.

  • @danx4567 I know me too! I never knew that was possible in the U.S. until prop 8 passed. We have gay marriage in Canada, but no one has ever tried to "let the people decide" because it's considered highly unconstitutional and unjust to hold referendums on civil rights issues, specifically ones dealing with minorities......... :S

  • There are much bigger issues in the upcoming presidential election, but that has never stopped hatemongers from scapegoating & victimizing the gay community to get votes or to divert attention. I expect that will continue. :-/ But what the hell is Matthews interviewing a designated hate group member (the Family Research Council) for the opposing view? Does he bring on white supremists every time a "black" story erupts? Quit treating these bigots as if they are respectable members of society. >.<

  • @dafttool I think everyone should have a chance to air opinions. After all, throwing light on intolerance is the best disinfectant.

  • The government has no right to have a ban on same sex marriage. The 9th amendment demands that if they want to ban same sex marriage they must also ban all marriage as they can not deny one group of citozens while letting the rest of citozens retain the same right.

  • @SuchAsLifeVideos

    Ciao Bello!

That "Bastardo" Blackwell was one of the prime demonizers of LGBT people during the 04' election cycle! Republicans would be on very thin ice if they went down that tired road! Public' opinion has shifted irrevocably on this issue! These bogus arguments in defense of "Traditional Marriage" sicken me, and thankfully they're beginning to wear thin with most Americans!

    Grazie Mille Uomo Bello!

    Il Suo Amico!

    Blaine

  • The Family Research Council was declared a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

  • I'm black and gay and find it sickening how much the black community is full of homophobia and bigotry. This is why I do the things that I do and study the things that I study. Pretty soon I'll be in the fight for gay rights on a legal professional scale. People are just so ignorant and are fast to forget the what it feels like to be a hated, second class citizen. Ken Blackwell should be ashamed.

  • Ken Blackwell a black bigot, how is that for irony?

  • @edgwaterprog unfortunately its not really. black people are generally more religious than white people. black people are significantly more against gay marriage than white people (as % of the entire population). But, the black people for gay marriage are a lot more supportive than a lot of whites... at least in my experience.

  • That guy has a lot of balls, rewind 50 years, many people voted against HIS rights as an African American. He is soo blind to what he is truly representing.

  • @tipofmytongue1024 Typical rightwinger.... "I have mine, the rest of you can starve....."

  • lmao...their "wedge" issue is the Tea Party. They have lots of issues.

  • Oooh the wedge document how long haven't we heard of that. Except this time it is about marriage not evolution or creationism.
