As usual, she's gorgeous, glamorous...you can't take your eyes off her. Also, as usual, her coloratura is sketchy, patchy, sometimes approximate. I will always maintain that her voice is very much like Mirella Freni in weight and timbre (sometimes she sounds exactly like Mirella) and she should follow that vocal path, rather than Bel Canto. (Yes, I know Freni did Bel Canto early in her career...Netrebko is past that point.)

I don't think I've heard this aria sung more movingly. Her Violetta was absolutely heartbreaking. I always loved her portrayals. She has a gorgeous sound and she is beautiful!

My favourite Violetta is Angela Gheorghiu, who took that plunge to sing Verdi's pianisissimo. Netrebko here sounds effortless, while Gheorghiu employs breathiness at the most theatrically appropriate moments in this aria to portray Violetta's troubled longing for romance and her following self-scolding.
I'd perhaps prefer Netrebko's Violetta in an audio CD.

A competition! My score is 7 out of 10. She looks and sings well, especially on the high notes, where she is superb. She loses a point for throaty singing on the lower notes, schoolgirl acting and lack of expression.

Anna Netrebko, doesn't know anything about COLORATURA, ACCACCIATURA, APPOGGIATURA and TRINADOS etc. she doesn't have technique, her voice isn't suited to sing coloratura roles. I am going to give her an advice, she should change her occupation or she should go to a Conservatoire to study The Bel Canto, and old schooling.
I think Netrebko has a really beautiful voice, but she is not suited to sing coloratura roles such as Violetta, Lucia and Juliette. Her voice is too slow.

While I'm not a big fan, I must say she does sound quite good here. This is by far the cleanest I've ever heard her in coloratura passages. What puzzles me is that she insists on singing coloratura roles...She's one of the rare singers IMHO who is singing roles that are too light for her. She seems more like Mimi or Manon, etc. Traviata is a good fit for her tho since it's not really a "coloratura" role.
@goldenthroat86 Yup, she always struck me as more of a lyric - like Gheorgiu and Fleming though with a bit of a smaller voice. They're all about equal as it regards coloratura technique but Fleming and Gheorgiu made smarter choices IMO.

For me, Angela Gheorghiu sings a better Violetta. Netrebko can't act or provide some subtlety or expression. She is mostly concerned with technique. How is she Violetta ? If you paid better attention to what I write, you'll see that I don't hate Anna and I'm not jealous. I never wanted to sing opera. Ana has great technique & she's a gorgeous woman. But she herself has admitted to being a Sutherland fan - which is why, like Joan, she cares only for technique. A greater opera singer combines both technique & passion, acting, living the role. If Netrebko were a better actress, I'd be a fan of her. She can't act. She just sings great.

I applaud Ms. Netrebko's effort. The voice is beautiful: full and rounded and clearly rooted in the Bel Canto technique. As well, she is a downright lovely woman who is physically a wonderful fit for the role of Violetta. However, while her voice is beautiful, I would have liked for her to lighten up a bit. The aria is about being light and carefree but her voice sounded too... Dramatic. Yes the combination made Callas' version famous, but this rendition lacks the euphoria Violetta sings of.

This indicates the artistry of Miss Netrebko, her adaption to the form of the production; she does not just sing (and act) Violletta, she sings the Violletta of the production she is in. She is growing beyond mere greatness.

Having also seen photos of Fleming in her current Violetta at the ROH, one can only marvel at Netrebko's resilience, endurance and commitment to bel canto opera.

My favourite Violetta is Angela Gheorghiu, who took that plunge to sing Verdi's pianisissimo. Netrebko here sounds effortless, while Gheorghiu employs breathiness at the most theatrically appropriate moments in this aria to portray Violetta's troubled longing for romance and her following self-scolding.
I'd perhaps prefer Netrebko's Violetta in an audio CD.

Maggielicious is a dumbass... I've been studying for music for about 12 years now (privately, not just in my middle or high school band, and now i'm about to graduate college with a music degree) and she is not out of tune. Anna Netrebko is one of the best sopranos of this day and age and we should be grateful she's even in the world.

While I'm not a big fan, I must say she does sound quite good here. This is by far the cleanest I've ever heard her in coloratura passages. What puzzles me is that she insists on singing coloratura roles...She's one of the rare singers IMHO who is singing roles that are too light for her. She seems more like Mimi or Manon, etc. Traviata is a good fit for her tho since it's not really a "coloratura" role.

For me, Angela Gheorghiu sings a better Violetta. Netrebko can't act or provide some subtlety or expression. She is mostly concerned with technique. How is she Violetta ? She's just standing there & singing. She clearly wants to emulate Sutherland, not Callas. She'd do better to try to provide some acting and passion into her performances. Another such lifeless singer is Renee Fleming. The true dramatically skilled sopranos are all dead

If you paid better attention to what I write, you'll see that I don't hate Anna and I'm not jealous. I never wanted to sing opera. Ana has great technique & she's a gorgeous woman. But she herself has admitted to being a Sutherland fan - which is why, like Joan, she cares only for technique. A greater opera singer combines both technique & passion, acting, living the role. If Netrebko were a better actress, I'd be a fan of her. She can't act. She just sings great.

Sure she is beautiful, but I doubt that the greatest conductors in the world wouldn't agree to work with a soprano just because she is pretty. Also, people complain her tone is too dark? Seriously, do they not realize she's Russian? The russian vocal school darkens the voice much more than the italian, etc.

I applaud Ms. Netrebko's effort. The voice is beautiful: full and rounded and clearly rooted in the Bel Canto technique. As well, she is a downright lovely woman who is physically a wonderful fit for the role of Violetta. However, while her voice is beautiful, I would have liked for her to lighten up a bit. The aria is about being light and carefree but her voice sounded too... Dramatic. Yes the combination made Callas' version famous, but this rendition lacks the euphoria Violetta sings of.

Traviata - Ms. Netrebko displayed ample power, coloratura bravura with a marvelous tone Having recently heard Natalie Dessay sing Sempre Libera at the Met Gala, one was impressed by the legato nature of Netrebko's portray in contrast to Dessay's intentional staccato, fragmented phrasing interpretation. Having also seen photos of Fleming in her current Violetta at the ROH, one can only marvel at Netrebko's resilience, endurance and commitment to bel canto opera.
