They hold their wings like that so the sun can bake the bacteria off their wings. It is also said to help them cool down. This pose is called the "horaltic pose." It is quite common.
This month I became the sponsor of the local zoo's turkey vultures, and joined the Turkey Vulture Society to learn more about the animals I'm sponsoring at the zoo. I see these birds whenever it's warm enough for them to fly.
I have 2 Turkey Vultures living near my house. I have seen them SO many times and I have also seen alot of big floks of them. The Wing Span of the Turkey Vulture is bigger then me!
Yeah they do that all the time. There are thousands of them in california. They roost like pidgeons wherever people congregate. They would make great target practice but Kosherfornia won't have it.
Actually I have. I work with an injured turkey vulture at a raptor center and he LOVES to spread his wings whenever it is warm and sunny out. I think he does it to keep cool since black absorbs a lot of heat- these birds do not like the water.

They are somewhat social and you will find groups like this sometimes. They are just resting and cooling off. Cool vid :)
