  • does it need to be silver first

  • @Marinecorps225 Go to a hardware store and just get silver coloured nails.

  • @redviolin1231 Well, it depends if you play with it. If you plsy with it, it will last for short one week, long about one month. If you leave it alone in a cold water, it will last until you just take it out of the water

  • where do i get zinc???????????

  • I wish you were my Chem teacher

  • how long would that coating last for? and is there a way to make it perminent or last longer? thanks

  • @redviolin1231

    very nice question

  • i thought the title says Making Gold and Silver Penis #LOL hjahahahaa

  • @cadavillo1 ikr me too

  • Are u sure that using a galvanized nail and drano(liquid form) works?????

  • @livefreerdiehard i dont know about the nail but the solution he used was zinc and sodium hydroxide. Which is the main ingredient in drano

  • can i use a battery covering for zinc

  • immagine if someone actually bought some `gold pennies` for around $100,000

  • Can you do this with liquid Drano? I know you can with the crystallized form, but I accidentally bought the liquid form!

  • This is great.

    I'm going to try it.

  • Got a silver one from a person in my German class today! Nice little thing to have...

  • @MrNDSteinbach Well, Heat it up then. You don't want to go for gold?

  • Ehyyy There is no equivalent exchange here! Also the law has forbidden to make gold!

  • @vuurwerkmania he didn't have a transmutation circle either hm, he must have a philosophers stone

  • how the hell are these household chemicals. i mean where the f..k can you get zinc powder

  • @randyterry23 if you watch the video when he shows the zinc ingredient he shows a substitute for each one and for zinc he put zinc coated nails. or galvanized nails as they are sometimes referred to.

  • @randyterry23 you apparently didn't watch the video long enough, it says to use galvanized nails. galvanization is zinc

  • @WC9456 what about about sodium hydroxide.

  • @randyterry23 a cleaner called drano i guess, i've never heard of it.

  • @randyterry23 Google it! I did and came up with United Nuclear in Michigan. Two ounces for four bucks.

  • ur doing alchemy

  • It's brass, not gold.

  • very cool school sci project

  • were do you get zinc powder?

  • the silver pennies arent real silver. they are only coated with the zink. and after heated the zinc and the copper from within the penny for the alloyed knows as brass which has a gold apearance

  • does it matter if the zinc has some zinc oxide on it (its not completely covered, extracted from used battery..)

  • does it have to be distilled water?

  • @TheOverlord55

As for your other two questions: No, the nail will not dissolve entirely, but some will.

Distilled is always better, as the chemicals in tap water may react with your chemicals, but tap water *should* be fine in this experiment... I think... (unless you have some really funky stuff in your tap water XD)

  • thanks

  • lol

  • is it real gold? and does the nail have to melt into the water? and is the water distilled?

  • No. Since gold and silver are elements, you can't get them without a chemical containing them.

The Penny is coated with zinc to make it look silver. When you heat it, the zinc fuses with the bronze to create the alloy brass, a metal often used in jewelery for its golden color and durability.

I've worked with brass, and though it is "golden", it does not look at all like real gold.

  • oh my god...

  • seewt i will try it

  • you know the funny thing is, I bleached my hair. Ok that sound totally irrelavant, but listen to this stages of the color of my hair.

    black - orange - gold/blond - white

its the same thing, but what I Dont get is how did it turn gold after white.

    :P

  • Aaah, looks like heated ZnO is yellow.

Why doesn't it become white again when you put it in the water?

  • You're actually putting a brass coating on the outside of the penny when you heat it.

  • BECUASE ITS MAGIC!

    BURN THE WITCH!

    XD

    sorry, I couldn't help myself

  • Do you just put the whole nail in there? Or do you have to grind it up in powder first?

  • How many nails, and liquid or crystal draino?

  • awsome! and 1st comment!
