Hmm, sometimes agates are really smooth n shiny, but other times theyre contained in a type of metamorphic rock, if u find a rock that has lil craters in it then its def some kind of agate, i've found some where I live that could easily have been missed by the untrained eye.
I went rock hunting at the fire agate mine in Arizona. I swear as beautiful in the sunlight as they were however some pieces looked like opals. Sometimes i really cant tell the difference i just trust it because its that type of mine however if i was to go to a store or something i almost always cant tell unless its bubbly or weird looking. Some of it look quartz almost.
You can often tell agates by their transparency and clarity. Agates can come in all colors, but I often find them in the white, yellow, orange, red, etc. Texture wise they often have conchoidal fractures, indicating their silica content because they are quartz based. The best time to look for them I've found is in the sun because they literally glow.
