  • I cut her hair and the base players hair back then in SF...Wondering how to contact them now? Anyone know?

  • Amy Winehouse had nothin' on Pearl. This was a GREAT Band. Pearl, Peter Bilt, and the notorious Stench Bothers, Hilary and John. Loved them!

  • @pecraig My friend saw an image of Pearl without knowing anything about her, and said "Who's that Amy Winehouse-wannabe? Pffffft!"

  • those wonderful evenings at the mabuhay!

  • Pearl would make a great aerobics instructor!

  • My kind of girlie.

  • god she is so cool.

  • Fantastic. I've loved this song forever; never saw the band or even a video of them before. Thanks for posting.

  • I F$@#KING LOVE Pearl Harbour!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I Have both LPs by Pearl & The Explosions, and Pearl's "Trouble" CD, all are excellent.

  • anyone have their Shut Up and Dance?

  • I still have the vinyl - thank you!!!!!!!!!

  • I remember watching this Back When "Pop Clips" (Precursor to the original Mtv) was seen on Nickolodeon Network!!! Thanks for posting!!!!

  • I think Gwen Stefani was influenced by Pearl.

  • I saw them live when they opened for Talking Heads in Portland 1979. They were exceptionally good.

  • I have the movie but they only play a minute of the song. It sounds like such an awesome song...it's listed in the credits but I can't hear the whole thing anywhere. I guess it's pretty rare. idk

  • now i see where the yeah yeah yeahs got hte dance from

  • I love the way she dances. I had no idea she had some stuff on here. Totally original new wave!!

  • Saw PHATE at the Commodore in Vancouver, BC, late 70's. Intoxicating band live. Power went out in the middle of one of their songs [Drivin'?] and the band, after standing around for a minute, started up acapella rendition, which was just as good at the electric version - incredible. These are accomplished, creative performers. Wish I could see them again live

  • She's adorable.

  • I saw them playing backup with Talking Heads in Seattle in the late 1970s. What a great show! The guitarist had a great unique funk style that was very tight rythmically. You can't really hear it too well in this video unless you really pay attention. I wish I still had their album. It was truly "all killer, no filler"!!

  • Awesome!

  • He'y S.F. crowd - good to read your comments & to see P.H. again. I have this album. The band I managed, Charles Biscuit Band, played at The Palms a lot, opened for Pearly Gates' employer, The Tubes (LOVE Fee Waybill) a lot in the Bay Area. Any of you remember The Biscuit Band?

  • It's so funny to see people like Neko Case getting a lot of hype today, but Pearl's record Don't Follow Me I'm Lost Too (prior to Driving) was classic alternative country back around 1978!

  • look up my old boyfriend, bobby castro... he took 1,000s of photos of SF shows and was married at the Mab about 1977

  • Awesome! Fantastic! Thank you!

What a great band, criminally overlooked.

  • Great to see and hear Pearl and the Explosions here. Right about the time this video was shot I used to catch their gigs at Palms Cafe on Polk St in SF. Anyone else here who frequented The Palms? I was the drummer in a band called Sharp which played there.

  • I saw them open for the Talking Heads in 1980 at Rec Hall at penn State University.I got quite buzzed prior to the show therefore I have no recollection of their performance. This helps.Thx for the post.

  • I was there too. Great show.

  • Saw them open for the Clash at Berkeley Community Theater in Feb. '79, the Clash's first American concert. Went out the next day and bought this 45. Still have it.

  • Flat killer...thanks for posting. The first time I've ever seen them perform.

  • Gr8 band from back in the day when girls were stealing the show (Pat Benatar, Blondie, Joan Jett, etc.) Pearl E. Gates was the hit. I remember being a fan and watching them in San Fran several times. After the band broke up, I remember seeing the Stench brothers playing in a bar band at the ol' "G Room" in Fairfield. I hope they read these blogs and know that their music and style was appreciated by many. I agree with what was said earlier, they deserved much more exposure than what they got.

  • Awesome to see Pearl and the Guys!

They were ahead of their time, far too cool for the Rock and Rollers--however, how could you not like them!

    I loved this band . . .

  • Bloody Hell, nice to see other fans of Pearl Harbour and the Explosions, how rare we are!

  • Excellent!! I saw them in about 1978 at the Whiskey A-GoGo in Hollywood, when they were the headline group and opening for them was The "Mystic Nights of the Oingo Boingo" (starring Danny Elfman)!!! believe that !!!

  • loved Pearl and the Explosions. At the last Leila and the Snakes show..Keystone in Berkeley. In the middle of one of Pearl's dance tunes, Leila stops the band insists on NO MORE disco ... in seconds she and Pearl are wrestling on the stage... no one new if it was part of the show or not.. 3 days later PEARL announces she has left the Snakes, taking the Stench Brothers with her.. Great to see the video. my favorite album form the punk era and the days of the FAB MAB in north beach.

  • Very cool! ...Do you know what she's up to now? ...I first saw her w/Leila and The Snakes back in the day ...And, of course Pearl Harbor ...It's too bad they didn't stay together ...Tremendous musicians ...Leila, The Stench Brothers and Peter Bilt

    Cheers ...

  • Pearl, a dear old friend with whom I lost contact, moved to LA area..was working as an actress and managing a vintage clothing store, last I spoke with her. my hubby and I met her late 70sselling vintage clothing in the bay area--have not talked to her in years..I need to get ahold of my lost friend and thank her for the diff she made, in my life......I been seaching these vids because oddly, I never saw her perform live anywhere! love her dearly--a one of a kind gal......
