  • YAY!!!!!!!!!!! I made this hat ur a great teacher!!! Thanks

  • @Sh3lli3R You are welcome.

  • Teresa, Could you tell me with this hat how I would change colors? I would like to do one using about 3 different colors in rows. Thank you for your help!

  • Just made one of these hats and it came out great and the perfect size. I am going to make another one for my daughter in law. Thank you for the great tutorials!

  • I love all your videos! They are so helpful, yours are really the only ones i watch when i need crochet help. Thank you! :)

  • *sigh* I've made a thousand hats for other ppl but never myself... I made one for myself it looks so retarded! I can't even bear to look at it ;(

  • the first time i saw it i called it crotch it

  • @asiankid93000 How funny! It is easy to get the word crochet mixed up!

  • Do you have any tutorials for berets but with different patterns other than HDCs?

  • Thank you for posting all of your videos! They are awesome and you do such great work!

I have a question I love this beret but how would I make it for an 18 month old?!

  • @arizonadawson The pattern would need modified and reduced in size for a smaller head. You will work less increase rounds and stitches.

  • This was my first hat and i came out perfectly. I am very pleased. Thanks.

  • @danitza02125 Please to hear that your crochet hat turned out!

  • Thanx for your help; it took me 2 days to finally figure it our as to what size crochet hook to use because I crochet really weird (I started tight and then loose) but at the end it was worth it. Your videos are very clear to follow and makes it very easy. Regards from México.

  • omg the best hat that i have made thank you for take your time to do thise videos for us ......=]

  • well hi, i follow all the instructions, but my hat came out to big.

  • i like this pattern very much, its much better than the one from threadbanger cause...toomany patterns thhis hat is cool but i kinda dont like the thing thaat covers half of the forhead(its the thing that is made for the head) is ther a way to do that without the thing

  • it fits perfectly

  • thank you so much i love the results

  • @maxie1133 Great to hear it turned out well for you.

  • very nice

  • could you come up with a bulkier beret? like a really slouchy one?

  • May i know what is the size of the hook ur using? thank you.

  • @Michaelyn80 Size I/5.5mm crochet hook.

  • i was getting all my stitches messed up towards the end until i read Poleth3 comment....

  • so i finally made my beret..my first ever crochet hat..thanks to this video although it did turn out a lot larger, i used a size j hook...i plan to get smaller hooks and make more!!! thanks

  • Hello,

I tried making this hat and although it came out lovely, its way too small to fit my head. I used an "i" hook and 4 ply yarn. did i do something wrong??

  • You can use a larger hook. You may naturally crochet tight. A larger hook will make the cap larger.

  • i got it now!! i didnt see that in that round u were not doing the 1chain after the HDC ! great videos ty so much!!

  • I followed the entire thing correctly and mine is too small... it looks like my 2 yr old niece could wear it! I used a size h hook.... could that be why?

  • Using a smaller hook will make the cap smaller.

  • hahahaha poleth !! apoco tejes?

  • hi =) hmm i dont get the round 20 when u say "inbetweenthe HDC", can some1 help me out?

  • Hey, I was wondering how long on average does it take you to complete one of these, if you work nonstop, that is.

  • It will take a couple of hours.

  • How much yarn do you need for this (in meter or yards please :D)

  • I keep ending up with a half double crochet or two extra than what your video says I should have. i've taken my project apart several times and I can't figure out why I keep getting extra. :(

  • I really enjoy all of your videos. You are really really awesome

  • Thank you.

  • MUCH BETTER QUALITY THAN ANY OTHERS!!! :) thnx!

  • You are welcome.

  • Hello Teresa, thank you very much for this video i made my first beret cap and it turned out great a little loose but it's good for being my first beret. Do you have a video for to make a beret for toddlers, i have a few small nieces they would love for me to make one.. Thank you!

  • You are welcome.

  • Thank you very much for the great video. After a few tries I was able to figure it out and have just finished my third hat. They will make great christmas gifts. Thanks again and have a Merry Christmas

  • You are welcome. Thank you for the comment.

  • Hi! I like your video! Thank you for sharing it!

I'd like to make that beret but my hook are class by millimetre... 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5 etc. Which one should I use? Which one is equivalent of your "I"?

    Thank you! :)

  • 5.5 is the closest to an I.

  • Thank you! :)

  • I have made at least 5 of these (maybe more) to date. I love making them. Though the first time I struggled because I was a beginner.

But I was wondering if you have a toddler version of this, or a way to modify the pattern for a 2 year old?

Thank you so much for sharing. I have learned so much!

  • i just subscribed! im planning to do this one!

  • I have made my first hat ever! I watched the video dozens of times but I got it and wanted to say thank you. I always wanted to learn how to crochet in the past, but thought it was to hard and just quit. God bless you and keep up the good work!

  • I am glad that you kept at it this time and are successful. I appreciate the comment, Thank you.

  • Could I also make a beret with a shell stich? Can't find how to decrease shells...Or should I do shells and a hdc band like you are doing here to be able to decrease?

  • Yes, you can do shells to make a beret. It may be easier to work your shells and then use the half double crochet to decreases or you can do shell decreases. There are many ways to decrease shells. I will send you a tutorial that I have made for shell decreases.

  • for the decrease were i shoukd end up with 25 i have 27 wat am i doin wrong

  • You may have done to many. Does it fit the intended head? It is not going to be a big problem if you have to many decreases as long as the hat still fits.

  • Hi Teresa I just got done making your beret for my daughter but it is too big I know all I need to do is more decreases but I'm not sure how to do them. its just the band that is too big from round 18 can u give instructions on what I should do? Thanks Love your site.

  • On Round 14, there are a series of decreases. You can do more decreases on round 14 prior to making the band. You will be able try the hat on her head before making the band to see if the fit is going to be correct. I apologize for the slow response.

  • Thank you Teresa! I had absolutely

no idea how to crochet and thanks to your helpful videos I can even make my own patterns now =)

    Much Love!!

  • I appreciate the comment, thank you.

  • Hi tjw1963 I just wanted to say thanks for sharing the instructions on this pattern I'm a newbie to crocheting hats my 11 yr old daugther came across this video and wanted a beret so I started making her one last night =)

  • is it normal to have some HDC left over even after you finish all ten HDC decrease in round 14?

  • Yes, there are stitches between each decrease. How you start the sequence of stitches, will not matter to the finished piece. It does not affect the project if you decrease first and do stitches or do stitches first and decrease. Even if you found that you had some extra stitches, this is one of those patterns that does not have to be exact, as long as the hat is fitting your head.

  • also, how would you make the band of it a bit smaller? cuz its a bit too big for my head :[

  • Hey! Thank you soo much for sharing. Your instructions were very easy to understand. I just started crocheting early this month-August- and I am going to make a beret nw thanks to you. Looking forward to more instructions from you. Have a great day in the Lord!

    linad

  • I appreciate the comment, thank you. :)

  • I love to crochet my mom showed my how to do it!

  • Btw, how long would you say this takes?

..for someone who's doing it for the first time and learning to crochet.

And how long did it take you to do it?

Please let me know :) Thanks!

  • If I set still and worked solid, it may take me about an hour. I could not predict how long it would take someone new to crochet to make it. It could be several hours to all day depending on how quick they catch on. I would not be concerned with how fast it gets done.

  • Hello im a 11 year old and im turning 12.I am learning on how to crochet.I am getting ready to do a beret cap.I've been really wanting to do this.Thank you for very understandable totorial!Bye ~Twins1arethebest

  • It is great to hear you are taking an interest in crochet. I appreciate y our comment. ~~Teresa

  • Do you have a video/written instructions for a slouchy type beret or tam (not sure what they are called)? I would want it to fit kind of large as I have a large hat size, also, I like the slouchy look. I would like to make one with cotton yarn for bad hair days in the summer or coming home from swimming. Thank you once again for your wonderful teaching videos AND they're FREE!!!

  • I have a semi slouchy posted and have a pattern written up for another one that I will be posting at a later date.

  • Thank you. I will be looking for your new video. My hair stylist wants me to me to make her the slouchier hat and both us can hardly wait for your pattern.

  • Would you happen to have that slouchy beret pattern now?

  • I do not have anything slouchier posted right now. You can take the existing patterns and continue to add rounds for a larger hat around. You can also crochet as many rounds as you want to make it slouchier.

  • I am busy making several of your beautiful flowers, but plan to make a slouchy hat. Thank you again for your help. My family knows you as Teresa, my crochet teacher. You are wonderful!!!

  • i love these tutorials, i am on my second beret in 2 days!!! Thanks u for great directions:)

  • sorry agean but just saying tat on round 18 i got 33 decreases not 20. but the hat so far does fit ,wich is a good thing!

  • You can refer to the crochet instructions posted on my crochet blog. The link is below my channel image on the right of the video.

The recommended decrease amount is 25 on round 18. If you got 33 decreases, you may have had a few extra stitches somewhere, which is not going to be a problem. You mentioned the hat is fitting which is great!!

  • ok i have a big problem. . . . . . . i counted how many decreases i should have and got 14 not 10. please help!!

  • Not a problem at all. Just rip out the last 4 decreases. There is an amount of flexibility with crochet hats. As long as the hat is fitting your head, continue to crochet the recommended stitches. If you have a few stitches extra or less, it will not matter, as long as the hat fits.

  • Sorry to be a pain, but for the decreases is that considered one complete HBC or is that considered two because the crochet needle is going around two chains. I just want to make sure I am counting my chains properly. Thanks for your hel:)

  • What are you calling an HBC?

  • I meant to say HDC

  • Hi, by the time I get to row 20, when you say Hd in between the Hd, the row becomes raised. This happened on the first one I made and I just ended with the decreased stitches to end it, because I wanted to wear. I did as you suggested with a previous viewer and both ways it starts to get raised. I would like to create my band to finish this. I appreciate your response and am grateful for your videos. :)

  • I am missing your question.

  • Wow, that's great :)

Im already done one hat without a scheme. I'll do yours beret to :P

  • first project I do and you explained it very well!!!

  • Thank you. :)

  • i wanted to know if you can help me do a baby beret i have tried but it doesnt come out correctly also do you have a tutorial for a santa claus hat i would love to try making one of those. thank you hoping to hear from u soon.

  • Both are on my project list. Thank you.

  • for round 20 you say, half double crochet in-between the half double crochet.

I have looked as carefully as I can with the pause button and I can not tell what you mean by "in-between the half double crotch".

It looks like you are going in the space as normal.

Do you already have a tutorial that will help me with this? I looked through them but you have so many!

I'm a quilter and have tried several times to crochet. I have now completed many beanies and a ripple blanket, thanks!

  • What I can suggest is for you to try both ways so you have an understanding of what I am talking about. Typically you go through the top of the stitch and under the front, back or both loops. When I say between, it is by the posts of the previous and next stitch. It is an optical illusion with HDC on camera, to appear that the stitch is being done in the top. I did it between for texture. You can go through the top but it creates more of a raised effect where between is flatter.

  • Oh my freakin gosh! I don't know how much I can thank you. Because of this video and the rasta hat video I have made seven hats! I have always wanted to crochet and because of you I finally can! THANKS! THANKS! THANKS!

  • You are welcome. :)

  • I just finished my two color beret, I ran out of one color at the start of the band, this is the first crochet item I've completed! For my last row I decreased so that it would be a bit more snug.

Thanks for the instructions, they are great and easy to follow. I will be trying the beanie caps for my sons next!

  • You are welcome. :)

  • Hi Teresa,

I finished my navy blue beret and it is so cute! Thanks for the instructions. Unfortunately, my husband just stole my beret, so I better get started on another :)

  • You are welcome. When the men steal what you make, you can take that as a great big compliment. :)

  • Thank You so much for all of your videos. They have helped me expand from just granny squares. I used Lion Brand on this pattern. 40% Wool, 45% Acrylic, 10% Nylon. The problem is the dye comes off on my hands when using this yarn. Is there a way to set the dye? I do not want to give this to someone if the dye is coming off. I also made a matching scarf I do not want this to come off on their skin.

    Thank You for your time.

  • You are welcome. If that happens again, I would recommend that you take the yarn back to the store. In all these years of crochet I have never had that happen. I would suggest a google search on how to set dye.

  • hey teresa, if i wanna make the beret with a smaller hook, how many rows do i have to add and which ones???

  • I would recommend adding 1 extra round after each increase round. There is going to be an amount of trial and error with a different hook and size. Depending on the size of your hook, you may even need to do another increase round so the top part of your cap is larger.

  • ha every time i hear the world beret the song

she wore a rasberry beret the kind u buy at a second hand store song in my head lol but great video im just getting started but once i get better i will definetely use ur videos =)

  • Post your questions and comments if you need help. Thank you.

  • You're amazing! I've meaning to buy a crochet beret for the winter season and now I can save money by making my own! I love to knit and always thought it was a shame that I didn't learn to crochet as well, but now your videos are making my dream come true, and just in time for the holidays. Thanks a bunch!! :)

  • You are welcome. :)

  • Wooo! I made a cool hat. I don't know if it's the kind that you were showing specifically, lol, but I like it. Thanks for your help with my first crochet project!

  • YEAH!!!! You are welcome. You can think of a crochet pattern as a blank template. You can add all the different and unique personal touches you would like. Some patterns present a lot of flexibility and this happens to be one of them.

  • Yyayy I made it :]

Thank you soooo much this is just what I had in mind. Only it was a little too big, so I made more deceases, it looks okay. Anyways, Thank you!!

  • You are welcome. :)

  • Hi! How do you add stitches to make the reggae look?

  • I do have a reggae cap and instructions in a different tutorial. Type or copy and paste these keywords in the youtube video search box: "rasta reggae slouch tjw1963"

  • Thank you sooo much for ur help ...i wanted to make a beret since like last winter and never understood it thanks keep up the good work maybe you can teach me how to make socks!!! bye!!!

  • You are welcome. I have had a couple people write and tell me they turned the slippers I have posted in to socks.

  • Hi. I'm using European crochet hooks. The one I've started this hat with is a size 6mm. Will that be ok? Is it similar in size to the one you use?

  • Size 6 is equal to our K hook, so it should be fine. I used an I which is equal to 5.5.

  • is there anyway to make the band smaller just the band part and everything else the same?

  • You can do more decreases or crochet a separate band and sew the band on separate.

  • how? by adding another row of decreases or can u actually pick another stitch in the decrease?

  • To make the cap smaller, you would need to do additional decreases. It would be similar to the decrease row, only you are doing another decrease row to make the opening smaller.

  • thanks for ur help :)!

  • Hii! I have a question, how do you hid the extra string left over?

Thanks for making these vids, the instructions are easy to follow. =]

  • The most recent tutorial for sewing on an earflap shows how to sew in a tail.

  • this is sooo cool i just finished making one right now but i use a f/5 hook? so it fits my head kinda tight it came out just fine but its just too tight and the back is small so im guess that i needed to add more rounds? or use a bigger hook? but its soo nice i like it ill give it to my little cousin haha

  • I used a size G hook in the tutorial.

  • Hello thanks for your help, My beret does not close like yours, in the round 18 I did 25 HDC but when I finished did not went to the starting point like the others but I continuing the project, I going to try again but with the hook you are using. I already make the winter hat the one you sent me at my e-mail and I did it really nice thank you. Let me know if your think I doing something wrong in the round 18.

  • Round 18: is 25 Half-Double Crochet Decrease. Round 19: is 50 Half Double Crochet. It sounds like it might be something in that area but I am not sure without seeing it.

  • You are an angel thank you some much, I made it and look great, the problem with round 18 was I counted the wrong way.

You don't have any idea how much I enjoy watching your video, It helped me a lot. Great job with the instructions you do it really easy to understand. Thanks

  • You are welcome. :)

  • Hi tjw1963,

I followed your instructions, but my beret never started curling up at round 14. I am not sure what I may have done wrong. Could it have been the sport weight cotton yarn? I used an (I) hook though. At one point it became wavy around (RND 10). I am thinking of taking it out and starting over again. may be I missed something.

  • It sounds like you may not have decreased stitches. It would not be necessary for your to start over. Just pull out round 14 and get do your decreases.

  • wow you are so clever and very generous.

thank you. I have dyslexia and find it so difficult to read patterns but your videos are a blessing to me.

    xx

  • I've been searching for a new hobby, and picked crocheting because I really wanted to make my own crochet beret, and I couldn't find any good tutorials. But when I stumbled on your video, I found it easy. Thanks a lot for posting these videos!

  • You are welcome. You have over 130 crochet tutorials to choose from.

  • Hi!

Im 19 years old and you've basically taught me to crochet :)

My Aunt taught me how to do basic stiches to make a scarf once a few years back, but ive only recently wanted to really get into it. You are amazing! and i thank you soooo much for having these videos, its so easy to learn from you. So once again thank you.

    -Tarah

  • You are welcome. It is great that you are learning. Keep up the good work. :) --Teresa

  • still looking for a tutorial on afghans. I can't follow instructions in books.

especially have a hard time changing colors.

    thanks,

  • I have a tutorial on changing colors and also a granny square afghan tutorial.

  • HI! oh goodness this is such a great tutorial I'm really happy you put this up, it came out really cute!

do you think you could make a tutorial for a cable knit beret?! that would be so great!

    thanks!

    kepp these coming!

  • I have a tutorial posted for a crochet cable. You can take that pattern and use it on a crochet beret if you would like. Most tutorial's and pattern stitches are interchangeable between projects.

  • i don't know what I did wrong...it doesn't fit in my head :( any clues?

    (but i'll try again!)

  • 1. You might naturally crochet tight.

    Solution: Use a larger hook.

    2. Your hook might be to small.

Solution: Use a size I crochet hook or larger if that is what you were using.

    3. Your yarn might be to small.

Solution: Use 4-ply worsted weight yarn.

    4. You decreased to much on the final decrease round.

Solution: Rip the yarn back to the decrease round and don't decrease as much.

I used a size I crochet hook with 4 ply worsted weight yarn.

  • @tjw1963 Hi,

I have a question. I used 4 ply Caron Simply Soft. My hat measures really small and won't go around my head. HELP!

  • @Lowbudget1000 That type of yarn is a little but smaller so you may need to make up the difference bu working one or two more rounds with increase stitches. You can use any yarn with slight modifications.

  • Written Instruction are posted on my crochet blog.

  • thanks for posting this!

i didn't do it this way but I really like the way your pattern turns out so I'll probably make another one :P

  • After you wrote me about the first part being private, I wound up with 4 uploads of this video, one which was a duplicate. I kept changing the file extension, uploading and then it would not show up. I had quite an upload jam somewhere. So much for getting them up at the same time but they are up now and that is what counts. :) I would love to see more of your hats. You can do a video response if you want to.

  • youtube can be pretty wonky sometimes.lol

I've added my original response and will definetly add some more as i make stuff :)

Oh I'm learning broomstick lace right now I've done two squares with it and it's taking me forever. I think I need two more hands to get faster. HAHA!

  • I like this a lot. Would you think that a beginner could do this too? Also, what kind of yarn do you use? Everything that you make looks so beautiful and elegant. I'm sure that has something to do with experience too. I love your videos.

  • I have had lots of beginners let me know that they have completed other hat tutorials. I used this yarn because of the color. I worked up the original pattern with 4-ply worsted weight which is what I would recommend.

  • i'm a beginner really and Teresa makes it easy to follow!

  • beautiful !!! sry just got in town and jumped on here hehehe

  • do you think that you can make a pageboy cap?

  • Thanks so much tereas :) that is butiful
