  • e brake + in gear + off + smother intake , that is what your suposed to do , if its standard it works better

  • To turn this engine, you should cut air intake...

  • Oil is the new pulling power!!

  • Keeping a fire extinguisher in the car helps a lot, shooting co2 into the intake will displace just about any amount of o2 and stop the motor

  • That sucks :(

  • What a shitty day it did not even get you (A) to (B) Bumber.

  • i dont like bmw buy you'r a cock

  • Comment removed

  • dämliches arschloch!

  • Lucky it didn't blow up in your face!

  • i think up shifting to like 4 5 has to work unless burnning oil makes your diesel gain 500hp,... if so id white smoke the tires up the street as it dies lol 5th gear burnout boys

  • @aleblack4 I've seen some run away trucks where they drivers have dumped the clutch from a dead stop in fifth gear and it still just burning out. Although all the times i;ve scene this happen is then its in a pull and on dirt. maybe no weight on it and on pavement would be different.

  • I think that you had to use a higher gear (4th or 5th gear) and slow it using brake power.

  • Ouch!!!

  • How about shifting to highest gear and relase the clutch?!

  • i then it died...

  • the only way to stop a runaway is to block air from going onto the intake. or wait till it goes through all the oil, throws a rod or locks up. or if you have a standard shift you can try stalling it when in high gear.

  • You drove it 20 miles, pulled out your camera, then filmed your cars death? Why not stop, and try to save it? You killed an extremely rare, but well built and reliable engine.

  • Jam the nozzle of a Co2 fire extinguisher into the intake and choke off the engine with carbon dioxide.

  • @TheMrBlinx Piss poor comment. Worst I've ever seen on YT. You should be banned from ever posting comments again, idiot! lol Why so serious?

  • @nexgenhippy Censor this, asshole! I said: "Piss poor video! Worst I've ever seen on YT. You should be banned from ever posting again, idiot!" and I meant every word of it. If you don't like it, go commit suicide, coward!

  • @TheMrBlinx I never censored it you retard i just took the piss out your stinky attitude. tough guy lol get your facts right you worthless piece of shit. You are holding back the advancement of human evolution single handedly. We all know what you said, because we know how to use YouTube. And you have the cheek to call me a coward? hiding behind your not so tough words.

  • @nexgenhippy I know you didn't, piss brain, but I'm sure you were one of the cowards who are afraid of the truth who made one of the thumbs down on my comment, didn't you, pig? You know you did, so I put it back up, asshole. Deal with it, chicken shit, or go commit suicide. After all, the day YOU die, the world will be a MUCH better place. Clear nuff, cunt? Eat shit and DIE, coward!

  • @TheMrBlinx Why do you keep calling me a coward when its you that hides behind tough words? Who are you to call anyone a pig? Your comment had already been flagged by multiple people before i came along, but i guess your too stupid to see that. Can you call me anything other than coward? Its getting boring. Eat shit and die? You wish hahaha go suck on satans cock, and stop trolling, your taking the piss out yourself now. COWARD. Lol hiding behind a keybooard internet tough guy. Go cry to mama.

  • The motor wont stop unless you starve it for air.

  • Karma for buying an imported POS

  • why not stick it in gear then dump the clutch with the brakes on hard?

  • @nexgenhippy I doubt the pressure plate is heavy enough to overcome six cylinders of angry oil-fueled diesel engine running at its physical limit

  • @blue7500 Your probably right but it would be fun to try..

  • my turbo failed last day...at least i stopped right away and pushed the car to my garage so my engine looks good and i need only to swap a new turbo in...you dude should think about your car bc i think u dont deserve to drive anything...thats a shame

  • @Cassnet What if its an auto?

  • unless you know whats happening just let it blow. high speed with diesel turned off will damage the fuel pump. the police cant fine you and it is fun watching. you will lose your hand if you try choke a diesel.

  • If you have thick book handy that will work just fine. (phone book maybe)

  • How about cutting the oil line to the turbo or using a CO2 fire extinguisher in the intake or a flat piece of wood instead a shirt or you hand.

  • The only way to stop a turbo runaway (when the car is stopped) is to stop the airflow like by stiffing a rag or your shirt in the turbo.

  • @mja19870000000000 ....

How about taking the hose of the inlet manifold :D

  • @mja19870000000000 and end up with a chewed up shirt.

  • why not stop the air flow?

  • Yes stalling in it a high gear would have saved the engine.

But trying to block the intake on a diesel is not just something you do. It sucks like helle, and if you try to yuse the palm of your hand, you will be damaged :-)

  • something akin to alien resurection at the end in the cargo bay? :D

  • block air cut the fuel lines

  • Would have done nothing, its not the fuel running the motor, its the oil the turbo picks up.

It will run until you stall it, or its out of oil.

  • It's self-igniting its oil, makes high revs destroying the engine very rapidly. Nevertheless, there's ridiculous torque, easy to stall. Hurry up the next time. A new engine please...

  • damn, runaway diesel, scary thing right there.

  • You should have stallled it in gear. I bet you overfilled it with oil to make this circus happen. It is as stupid as boring. A new scrap engine please...

  • u can fuck it stalling them i have heard?

  • u coulda saved it i woulda just unbolt ed the turbo and let it sux its own air its woulda burt alot more diesel and ran like shit but it would got you there

  • u could have choked it through the intake

  • We had an Automatic Pajero that did this. Oddly the engine survived, although I'm not convinced it was ever quite right afterwards. There's really not much you can do for a runaway, specially if it's auto...

  • just block the air intake with a shirt or something

  • If motor smokes then put out it immediately. Yours turbo is broken. So came start first smoke out, after you have gone on, yours broke turbolader completely and has sucked engineoil. so you could also not switch off.Sorry my english is not good. Iam a turk.

  • Is this not with manual gears?? It is so damn easy to stop the engine just by using high gear and brakes.

  • I'm not sure it'll work well with a diesel without killing your clutch.

  • Ivé tried it 2 times with Opel Zafira diesel.

Just pop it in 5th gaer and relase clutch

  • it will in a high gear.

  • Wow that really sucks! Sorry to see man!

  • If this happened to me ,I would do 3 things: stop vehicle, get out, and walk away................

  • Oh, well in that case..... lol : )

  • Nice job driving your car to its death and then assing around before trying to do something to stop the run-away. Geez, some people won't drop a fucking camera or a cellphone to save their lives.

  • engine was almost dead (bottom end and cam etc.) before that and replacement ready to be installed.

  • @tvlandman2 you cant stop a runaway unless you clog the intake lol. it either blows up which hes lucky it didnt cause his dumb a** was right under the hood or it runs its self out of oil which it did.

  • @olesteve2 I understand. I had a diesel engine in a tractor runaway. After fighting it for several minutes trying to get to the air intake, we finally shut it down and saved the engine. The tractor is still used to this day, with no lasting damage.

My point is, when that happened to me, the last thing I was thinking was, "Hey, let me film thiswith my cell phone and put it on YouTube."

  • @tvlandman2 stfu and stop watching if you cant take enjoyment out of videos like this.

  • @tvlandman2 There's only 2 ways to stop a runaway diesel.

    1. Snuff the oxygen.

    2. Let it die.

He DID do something about it, he completed one of the 2.

  • @tvlandman2 if only he had squeezed the airhose smothering the engine then he could save it :P

  • What happened & what was wrong with it?

  • the oil seal must have ripped or broken somehow, allowing oil to go into the engine. So the engine just kept sucking up the oil and running on the oil, no way you could stop that by turning it off or anything.

  • Quickly block the air intake.

  • Or put it in a high gear, put one foot on the break and let go of the clutch.

  • blocking the air intake will sometimes do nothing as it will start sucking air past the pistons and through the crankcase, and sometimes if it is out of diesel it will run on the crankcase oil...

  • @pepperJman this thing hapening here IS because of the crankcase oil

  • @pepperJman A story from my homelands tells about old farmer who parked his old tractor on a hill. This tractor model had unfortunate ability to start running backwards.

So, the tractor was on the hill and handbrake gave up.

When the injectorpump of that model was running reverse, it was on full output. Funny part is, that when running reversed, oilpump doesn't supply lubriciant to bearings. Farmer paniqued, hit all fuel lines broke with a wrench, but old engine was already using oil to run...

  • @pepperJman

u cannot suck enough air to run an engine on past piston rings.

in fact if u can suck air past the rings it wont run.

sorry but u r way out there.

if u block intake and its still running u havent blocked the intake enough or intake tract is leaks.

a fire extinguisher is what works.

  • put it in 5'th, let clutch up, apply brakes. lost of $ saved

  • I've seen a runaway silage truck that couldn't be stopped that way. This guy could have had an automatic too.

  • you guys don't know deisels they can run them selves by stealing fuel from anywhere such as the oil pan, because they can suck it out and run on that until you let it blow up or disconnect the battery

  • ok.. you disconnect the battery......it shut off the fuel valve from the fuel tank.......but its still running on its own engine oil so it will still carry on revving away....remember, diesels dont have an electrical ignition system, as long as there is compression in the engine cylinders, it will carry on its reving until it seizes or throws a rod.

  • What i have seen before, when rebuilding an old detroit 6v92... a steel block off plate for the initial fire. If not rebuilt correctly, them old 2 stroke detroits were famous for running away. The steel plate would be placed on the intake to cut off the air.

  • or i suppose you can keep a co2 fire extinguisher in your boot or under you seat incase of an event like this, you just discharge it into your intake for the engine to kill the runaway instantly

  • what is disconnecting the batt gonna do?

  • nothing

  • exactly my point

  • Fire extinguisher in inlet!!!??

Or drive car into a pond! lol.

  • i have the same thing in my vw passat 1,9tdi

  • when this happens, just put your car in highest gear, hit the breake and release the clutch. You can stop the engine this way and maybe it will be ok after changing turbo only.

  • Why highest ? That will probably just burn the clutch :(

  • Cause you have to stall engine, release the clutch fast and the engine will stop.

  • Clutch or engine ...... that an hard question !

  • Especially since putting it in a lower ear will save the clutch and stop the engine.......

  • U use a high gear so that the brakes can stop the engine.

If the clutch is being used to stop the engine then it wont make any difference to the clutch what gear u r in will it!

If clutch is being used as a break the same loading will be on it! doh!!

  • Of course u use the breaks to stop it.

It wont matter to the clutch which gear is being used , HOWEVER it makes quite the difference to the tranny(different load on each gear) higher gear will stress the gears (and gear selecter) more.

  • No a higher gear will stress gears less as there will be less torque on all the shafts apart from the input shaft which is held still with the brakes anyway.

Remember torque is calculated by multiplying the gear ratios, ie in 1st at say 4:1 u have 4 times the torque at the output shaft and so at diff driveshafts etc.

  • well which one you want a burnt clutch or a dead engine?

  • BTW by high gear I mean 5th.

In 5th gear the drive shaft has least torque but highest speed, 1st has highest torque but lowest speed.

U r much more likely to smap a prop shaft in 1st than 5th.

  • Sure, just put a brick on the accelerator and she'll be just fine!

  • Piston Slap?

  • diesel runaway

  • BMW sucks. They still think they're making aircraft engines like back in World War Two, so, there is "no need" for proper cooling and reliability.

  • Gut das Du auch schon Ahnung hast ;-)

  • im probably wrong, but that looks like your engine started burning its own oil. i forget what causes it, but thats why it wouldnt stop or shut off. it only happens to diesels cuz gasoline engines cant run on engine oil.

  • you're right.

  • Yeah, because Germany is just rampant with Mexicans and they all happen to work at the assembly plant in Dingolfing. You, sir, are a fantastic douchebag.

  • Ummmm, BMW's are made in germany.

so how did mexicans assemble them?

  • My brother had just the same in a renault megane turbodiesel. It was a friends care and the care broke down, lost all power and smoked as hell. The engine wouldnt stop.

  • sounds like the turbo whent and when that hapes there is now stoping the car as the broken turbo will foce engin oil into the enging and it will run on that untill it runs out of oil my friend car did that on the motorway and we just had to sit there and watch it self destruct itself. (it whent spataculerly). but not im told if there do that put it in fith put you foot on the brake hard as you can and dump the cluch and stool it if you have an auto get well away engins can blow up bigstile.

  • Is the car repaired?

  • Hey man, I have e34 524td.

Check out my video, you'll see that I have a lot of smoke as your car does.

I've uploaded that video a couple of days ago, and today my engine went totally wrong. Couldn't turn it on, some metallic sounds and a lot of smoke...

Ohh, I really should be buying petrol BMW, not diesel...

  • 115 bhp does make make a car an "Ultimate Driving Machine"! New BMW's have great diesel engines but really a BMW should have a petrol straight 6 or bigger!

  • Well, i think you need a new Engine^^ It's bad when it do this, you could try to shut it off by strangling her...but thats not working all the time...if you'r clutch is too bad it won't work.

  • Check the core of the turbo, barrels & stuf inside the core,

  • turbo shaft broke, "oil pump" inside turbo also cracked, probably something from the turbo got sucked into the engine as there is no damage on the compressor side blades but heavy damage on the turbine side blades. nothing from engine/cylinder head is missing, but cylinder 1 got heavy damage on the piston. looks like whatever got sucked in was hitting it. i just swapped the engine.
