  • The look on her face when she says " Would I be shocked? Would it ruin my character?" is very sensual and provocative. It's subtle but still extremely hot

  • Kiss her stupid! Excellent movie anyway.

  • So painful to watch.

  • Some of the very finest acting in the history of film.

  • One of my favourite movie scenes of all time. Says so much.

  • .... Though a brilliant performance.

  • Bloody English :-) what red blooded Christian man could have otherwise abstained from taking a woman so eager to be taken ?

  • This is a perfectly understated movie. No finer showcase for Thompson, Hopkins or Merchant Ivory. It's the mark of a great film when you're so drawn in that you're incredibly frustrated with the actions of the characters.

  • Mr. Stevens must be a schizoid..

  • oh dear god ! i have studied this novel for two successive years n i have never imagined Mr. Stevens on this way specially in this scene , he is always suppresses his emotions n at da end he didn't change but in this cinematic scene its very obvious hw hard it was to suppress his feelings to Ms Kenton , he was really in love wiz her , although its nt important in my study section to concentrate on the loving feelings only on da suppression ones but it turned my mind about his character! nice :)

  • the real genius here is the direction. the direction is just brilliant. of course, these are top rate actors in their prime, but think about the movement of the actors, the way hopkins forces her to come close to him, prying the book out of his hands, the way she hesitatingly tries to approach him, getting closer and closer, the way hopkins backs himslef into a corner--that's what makes the scene. what a director and movie.

  • Always makes me so sad because he reminds me of myself.

  • @MaLoDe1975 why would you act that way?

  • @rikka80

well stupidity. but i couldn´t help it.

  • Anthony Hopkins is amazing here...I never loved him more than in this movie.

  • All I can say is, the film differs quite a lot from the book, which I would recommend anyone who really wants to get a grasp of this story to read.

  • Thank you OurEvening,

So basically they never get together?

What a waste of a life. Look, working is all good and well but Mr.Stevens is just so unhappy looking....until kenton comes along. He has the chance in this scene, but just doesnt have the balls. It's so sad, its so obvious he cares in this scene...i dont know why she doesnt take the hint either if she loves him? Cos she seems alot more outgoing than he does.

  • I love this scene. It is absolutely brilliant. So intelligently written and incredibly well acted. Their tension and feelings for one another are so hot. And my understanding of these two characters increased dramatically with this one simple scene. Just beautiful.

  • This makes me freaking mad! Just make a move! Don't stand there like an idiot!!!

P.S. This is my favorite movie... and it still pisses me off every time.

  • Wow, he really wants her but just closes himself off!!! I havent seen the movie..could someone explain why he is like this?

    Thanks.

  • @FunnyMsFace The character Mr Stevens is a butler or man-servant to Darlington Hall. He is duty bound and thinks of only completing the day ahead of him. He is not impressed by love and turns to books in his spare time but when he finds himself falling for Miss Kenton, he is stuck between duty and love itself. For the whole movie he is in deep denile about his feelings for her. The scenes are snaps of his memory and eventually it comes back to the present day where he is with her 20 years later.

  • he looks so vunerable in this scene, afraid of his emotions towards her, no courage to take the next step

  • How many opportunities did Miss Kenton give to Stephens in this film? Most women of any worth allow a man but one chance - he had several and blew them all - but this was the moment that defined a life wasted.

  • Best scene of the whole brilliant movie. A perfect example of how sometimes in acting, less is definitely more.

  • Everytime I watch this scene I'm saying: " Kiss her you idiot!! What the hell are you waiting for?" even if I know that is not going to happen

  • The subtlety in this movie is completely precious.

  • A bolder, more perceptive man would have read her intentions, touched her, held her, and kissed her until she ran out of air. She would have been his forever.

  • that look in his eyes! gosh! desire fighting agains constrait and repression. masterpiece scene

  • achhh!!! Beautiful scene

  • This made me cry

  • I saw this picture first when I was 13 and I loved it. It is one of my favourite films ever.

  • The greatest piece of acting ever. The film in a scene.

  • This scene just makes me suffer! I soooooooooooo want him to kiss her. He wasn't letting her have the book, because he was relishing her touch. Also, did you notice how he finally released the book when she looked into his eyes? That disarmed him but not enough unfortunately. :(

  • @poetwriter18 Great comment, but can you also tell me why he never jut opened himself to her? I never understand that under the whole movie...was he shy or just doing his duty correct? I didn't really catch that part...

  • @Alpito123 I think he was so reserved, because that's how his father always was around him; he was raised to put his duty first, no matter what - and in doing so, he tried to repress his emotions. I suppose being raised like that would affect you, and make it hard for you to let people in. You can almost feel his conflict in this scene: he wants to kiss her, or touch her, but he doesn't know how after shutting people out for so long. For me, that's what makes this film so sad.

  • @poetwriter18 "He wasn't letting her have the book, because he was relishing her touch." i love your interpretation, at first i thought he doesn't want to let her in, i could never understand a man's refusal when he wants it so.

  • @poetwriter18 ...well said...=)

  • @poetwriter18 he would probably reject her if she kissed him, even if a part of him longed for it

  • @rikka80 I agree. It would almost make him withdraw more. He holds onto his self-control no matter what. No matter the cost.

  • @poetwriter18 I'm not sure I agree with you there about enjoying her touch, I think he was genuinely embarassed. He was reading a romantic fiction book and he didn't want her to see it because he would feel exposed, she would know he felt that way and wanted her. He was desperate for her not to see it. The tension is there because she wants to see into his soul and he is trying to hide it.

  • @poetwriter18 : Probably the most erotic/love scene in the history of cinema.Love suffering. You've said it.

  • This scene is beautiful! Thank you so much for uploading it.

  • sweet ^_^

  • Great scene!

  • Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins at their finest.
