For my dear friend, who passed too soon two years past. Tonight I lift a glass to you, sweet girl who goes ahead of us. Good night to you... My friend.
Absolutely lovely version, but none of the comments I've seen here give proper credit to Liam Clancy and the Clancy Brothers&Tommy Makem. The song was virtually unheard outside of Ireland and Scotland until the earliest Clancy recordings in New York in 1957 and 1959. The phenomenal popularity of their group in the early 60s, the first quasi-genuine Irish folk music in the U.S. that wasn't schmaltzed up by Bing Crosby or Dennis Day, introduced the song to virtually all who followed.
i dedicate this song to my dad and to all who have fallen to the beast cancer. lost my dad dec 20 2007.( hoisteing a glass of guinness.) to my dad and all who cancer. hear hear!!!!!!
There is no more beautiful instrument than the human voice. Whether you are singing, listening, or both you must have the ear as well. Keep treating us Jennys with your delightful and pleasing sound and to that I wish you well and God's blessings...now and forever more! !
for some reason i think this is a good song to listen to on new year's eve...but anyways i remember learning this song in chorus a long time ago. it's a song that will make anyone go emotional :)
They are lovely singers. When you've enjoyed their rendering listen to Liam Clancy's version. Liam is from Waterford Ireland where this song had its birth. We sing it there as our last song when closing a party or having to leave before tis done.
JRS, go fuck yourself! What a stupid comment... If you don't know how to appreciate good music and that's all you can say about Irish music maybe you should consider killing yourself and doing us all a big favour.

this is hands down the best version of the parting glass. so pure and beautiful. my college a capella group sang this arrangement, and although it can't compare with the jennys, i think we did a pretty good job. you can hear it if you search for "nothing but treble 2010 the parting glass"
Beautiful singing and harmonies - thankyou. I sing this song a lot - it is said to have been written by Johny Armstrong on the eve of his excecution for murdering my Scottish ancestor John Carmichael - though of course it has travelled a lot since the 17th century!
I have heard this song so many times in my life time after time I fell in love with this heard it from many dfferent people by far for what ever it is worth these women are by far the best crisp clean clear and the best is .............. It was heart felt thankyou
@hit004541 It's a contraction of the word "ever". It's an old-fashioned or poetic way to say, for instance, "All the harm that I've ever done" as "All the harm that e'er I've done", and it flows better in the song.
@hit004541 "E'er", is a poetic shortening of 'ever' used a lot in 17th - 18th century English literature and poetry. "Wherever - where'er" for example. Or " Never - ne'er". Quite rare to see it used in modern English.
We're using this song as our curtain call for the play The Glass Menagerie. If you know the play, you'll understand why it makes people cry their eyes out. It took me forever to find this version here on youtube though.
@ginnoveffect I hate it ! No disrespect but I have both acted and directed it and I still see no merit whatsoever in it . .Maybe I'm missing something . . . Enjoy all the same ! P.S A'int it funny how we all have such diverse tastes ?
More than great. Brilliantly done, great example of how acapella should be made. Beautiful voices. Il can listen to it over and over again. Thanks for sharing.
Bloong, I'm pretty sure "Wailin' Jennys" is a play on Waylon Jennings. And soul/blues singing is sometimes referred to as wailing. Janis Joplin wailed, for instance.
Very nice version. Check Cara Dillon singing this. She's got a new disc out which is excellent. There are a few youtube videos of her singing this song.
I m pretty sure I knew it was a scots irish tune lol. And yeah I was a chorister /barbershopper for ever in a day like 25 years, though now I have to say that I'm pretty picky about who I sing with. They blend so well together.
And yes, Central/eastern canadian and north central US share a distinct accent. very long over pronounced vowels. Given the influx of snowbirds to Socal/Desert Southwest you hear bits of it there too.
So do us all a favor and reduce your sarcasm. ;-p)
These gals remind me of a more polished version of the Roches/Wilson Phillips... very very good. I'd sing with them in a heart beat. The phrasing is very very American and their diction is very suburban, very Caucasian and somehow Californian.
Ok so california via canada lol... I thought I sensed a bit of North/Midwest in their voices..in retrospect, the over pronounced vowels are a dead giveaway...but I have to say that their styling is wonderful and very easy on the ears. Those soft suspended chords are like sweet cream.
This is a traditional Irish/Scottish folk song... and I didn't know a suburban Caucasian had a distinctive sound. I'm sure they'd be glad to know that they're good enough to sing with you.
Our choir has just started to learn this. Beautifully sung.
