Thats said. I actually dont like Japanphiles or Koreaphiles or any such thing. BTW, I am Japanese. They are very superficial and have a chip on their shoulders. I have no proof but sometimes think that they are kind of created by someone. At the same time, I think that China haters are also created, though again there is no proof.
Actually, I kind of dont like your video here. You started to talk about Koreaphile, but you used Japan for a comparison. There is no need to use Japan, though I agree its easy to use.
You also made a video on J-pop vs K-pop. No need to compare. Korea has a great culture and history. If someone like Korea, they like Korea, and its fine. there is no need to think about Japan or to hate Japan.
@superguizi I made the comparison because both countries have only come into the western public eye in the last decade or so, first with Japan and now with Korea. To describe the characteristics of people intrigued by foreign and "exotic" entertainment, such comparisons are useful.
As for Japanphile, its kind of new thing. Until mid 90's, Japan was portrayed as mindless copycat or something. Then attitude of foreign media changed dramatically, and lots of Japanphile appeared. How superficial. Koreaphiles are the same. There was a sudden Korean wave just recently.
Now, people are fighting which culture is better japan or korea. Japanphile dont like Korea, Koreaphiles dont like Japan. Ridiculous.
i could possibly be a japanophile. i like their fashion and i imitate the girl's hairstyles. i read manga, but only own about 10, i just started back up on anime because i've been so DEEP into dorama from both korea, japan, and taiwan. i want to try japanese food, im learning japanese, BUT, i will limit myself on certain anime, don't like all jpop/rock groups, and i won't eat everything! i may try different foods, but it's food, got to at least sample for any type of food
haha kpoop is just cheap imitation of jpop from many many years ago, korean is very primitive people, their whole culture is imitation of our japanese
@p00lman of course you wouldnt understand the current situation in japan right now, the korean government and entertainment industry is bribing japanese broadcast companies under the guise of "nation branding" to create a manufactured "korean boom", which of course does not reflect the popular interest. And of course methods like bulk buying and hiring people to create the illusion that korean things are a success in japan. korean things are only seen as cheap, we do not have such bad taste.
@p00lman obsessed with kpoop? it is only on the TV where they gather shills to make it as if kpoop is a huge phenomenon. Kpop concerts have huge audiences? Do you even know how many koreans are living in Japan milking off our welfare system? If we are so obsessed, then why we had a huge anti-kpoop rally this year?
@2channIist Looking at your channel, you're clearly one of those uber-nationalistic trolls, but I'll indulge you for one more reply until you're banned.
The fact that some Japanese don't like kpop doesn't negate the fact that many do. You know Maximum the Hormone? They came to Korea this summer, and in between songs, the drummer Nao started singing SNSD songs. Yoshiki came this fall and dressed in a hanbok. Not all Japanese are mindless bigots like you.
@tsuchijunko Yeah, 'primitive' Koreans are imitating Japanese culture when Koreans were the ones who educated Japanese on Chinese and Korean culture centuries (Heck about two millenniums) ago. Makes sense...
@Ilikemeows No need to respond like that just because of their ignorance do not put down another group Historically all have taught all on something just like in other places in the world one group will specialise and be better other will learn from them and vise versa lets ignore ignorance or correct correctly without degrading our self to an ignorant level. No qualms with you just p's me off when to up left another race or group you need to put anther down...
I've never actually thought about this, but you are totally right! .. so I guess I'm a koreaphile because a couple days ago I bought a calculator and the instructions were in korean, I went craaaazy about it (fangirl crazy :P) just because it was korean ... is it bad? :S
As far as Japan, I've always been interested in some aspects in their culture, but I've never considered myself to be a Japanophile. For example, I really like the Visual Kei J-Rock bands because of their beauty, but not all of them are good by any means LOL. I don't watch much anime, I've never eaten Japanese food, but one of my friends did recently get me hooked to this Japanese drama called Hana Yori Dango!
I think its good that you made a video about that topic, because thats something, i already thought of a lot. I mean, we all know those western people, beeing excited by Japanese entertainment, and getting kind of obsessed by that entertainment - dressing in a different way because its japanese , and thinking everything from overseas is great. The same is happening with K-PoP and Drama-thingy now.
The Problem is, that people think the only good music that comes from Korea is K-PoP.
As an Asian, there are subtle differences that I've noticed in how we categorize entertainment. For example, Manga refers to Japanese comics, Manhwa for Korean comics, and Manhua for Chinese even though they ALL use the exact same characters: 漫画 .
The difference in pronunciation is only apparent to us as Westerners but for Asian people, there's often a nationality tag attached.
@mahouneko of course. for ex. would you want your US graphic novels to be called Bande desinees?? (that's what it is called in French) i mean, Asian countries have pride in their nationality, and esp Korea, China and Japan didn't really have such a great time with each other throughout history. no one would like to be judged as if they're someone else. plus there's enough distinction b/w Korean and Japanese cartoon style for that pronunciation to become significant.
It's not quite like that. I mentioned the nationality tag aspect largely because of two things:
1. localization
2. origin of product
Asian countries are much more persistent about proper categorization, at least from my experience. Good example is looking for Unbalance x Unbalance at an import bookstore in Hong Kong. If you want the original KOR product, you go to the Korean shelves. If you want the JP localization, you go to the JP shelves.
Actually, Michael, anime isn't exactly a genre either. It is a type of medium that is more akin to cartoons and animation in general. The only reason why it is called anime is because it consists of a style that is largely unique to Japan.
@mahouneko I know, I realized that after I said it, but I can't exactly say it's another "medium" either. It's a "genre" in how it distinguishes itself from western cartoons, but within itself, it is capable of covering all the topics we know as story genres.
Right but that wouldn't explain the Disney movies up until Toy Story or even animated movies like The Land Before Time. But this might be getting way too off topic.
I guess the better question to ask would be "would someone like a country enough to move there?"
I like some aspects of the Japanese culture, but I'm not under any illusion that I could move there and reasonably live in comfort.
@mahouneko Or rather, the question should be, "Do I know enough about a country to move there?" rather than "Do I like the entertainment enough to move there?"
You don't know how many questions I've gotten asking if living in NYC is like Sex and the City.
Fortunately for me, I'm a fairly practical person so looking at how anti-immigration the Japanese government is, I'm not under any illusion that I can expect to live comfortably there. It also doesn't help my impression when a video game blog that I frequent (Kotaku) has an editor who got hassled by the Japanese police just for driving with his family (Japanese wife and Japan-born kids).
i agree. as much as I like the increasing awareness of Koreans... I don't think koreanophiles or japanophiles as a good thing. People just like the entertainment aspect of it, or some nitpick parts of the culture. Weird thing is, Japanophiles are usually really defendant of Japan and think its culture is really better compared to other Asian cultures, but for people that into kpop they usually diss a lot of Korean issues like the promotion of beauty over talent and etc..(in mainstream kpop).
@tokee1234567 You misunderstood something. Most of jpop fans, who leave comments in YouTube, are japaneses. But kpop fans, who leave comments in YouTube, are from all over the world. I mean 10~20% of kpop fans, who leave comments in YouTube, are koreans. You know Soompi and Allkpop right? According to those system operators' words 10% of membership are koreans. Because american pop fans are from all over the world there are so many disses about american pop in YouTube.
@sushi1086 yes but there's a tendency for a lot of Asian countries to get discriminated I think generally foreign jpop, or anime fans don't have much complaints in Japanese culture that borders on controversy, but for kpop, controversies are talked about all the time. (if you look at what articles are shown up on allkpop, they go as far as to Korean politics). not that it's bad or anything but people keep judging Korea, saying that they're homophobic, too conservative. not saying Jpop is bad
@tokee1234567 Do you know any famous English websites for japanese entertainment business like soompi or Allkpop? If you know those can you tell me those websites with personal message please?
@sushi1086 um personally I don't remember any jpop sites. I know crunchyroll, which isn't a jpop fan website but was originally an anime/j drama website.
