I've learned the hard way that with a bench for using hand planes like this big, thick and very heavy is the best. At minimum I am going to make a new base because the lack of mortise and tenon into the base allows it to rack a bit. The top was bought at Grainger and its perhaps 1 1/2" thick.
@swissknife Actually, I feel inclined to make a new base for it. The allthread construction was quick n dirty, but regardless of how tight I make the bolts it still will flex. That's not what you want with a bench. When I remake it, I'm using solid hard maple and cutting pinned through mortise and tenon joinery.

one question: how thick did you make the top? 2 inches i reckon?
And it's been two years- how is it holding up? =)
