I like this video - it gives me hope that I can manage to put out an ebook without blowing a lot of money. Like anything, you must contribute all that lies within your ability and contract the rest out, i.e. if you can't create artwork, and artwork is required, you will have to have someone do it for you. Therein lies publishing cost.
But holy crap people, is it really not possible to get past the fact that she is a pretty girl and listen to what she is telling you?
Most self-publishing companies allow buyers to go with an e-book or a hard copy. It doesn't really make much difference now that POD is widely available. I still prefer books in the printed form, but I've read several on various types of screens.
You forget the editing costs and the art for the self publisher. Your book was edited for you. But i love the idea of your site. I'm planning on self publishing when my first part of the series gets a fine tooth comb through it that I'm paying for out of pocket. I also know nothing about visual art and found a cover artist that is also costing me out of pocket. I see no way around these costs.
Let's face it, if your book takes off publishers are going to come after you and you have the cards. Remember that novel, The Shack? That was self-published (before eReaders) and got onto the NY Times best seller list. I didn't like it personally; but it shows how short-sighted publishers are. New talent is very unlikely to get discovered by big publishing houses. They don't like risk. Finally, something to help the creative person who did all the work get it out there and earn.
She's right. Publishers are taking on less and less new writers and unless you're a sudden success like Rowling or Meyers, you're not going to get much out of them as an advance. Publishers don't like digital publishing because it gives the writers the ability to bypass them and get paid for their work (that likely would get rejected as publishers barely give them a chance). I know. I've been through the system and they don't even say why they're rejecting you. I like this development a lot!
They are not charging you for the publishing, they are charging you for the writer's work. There is a huge difference between publishing a few pages vs a full manuscript. Editing the novel to fit in kindle format is very time consuming...
well, traditionally, publishers and author combined makes from 20 to 35% of the retail price or something
which is why Amazon wants to take 65%, which makes it hard for the book publishers to reduce their price cuz that would mean less profit for ebooks compared to dead trees

Never trust a publisher, unless you are your own publisher.
They all lie.
