the umbra is really small, but the penumbra (which is shown) is the correct size. i'm surprised they chose this eclipse and not the one from march of that year.

The most part penumbra can't be seen this clearly. Although it is the right size, only the umbra should have a shadow as dark as this.

hmmm.... i was in Turkey for that eclipse but i see your shadow misses it entirely! and the actual size of the moon's shadow is less than 100 miles in diameter, though a larger "circle" is cast (where people can see a "partial" eclipse). well despite your inaccuracies, it is a cool simulation!

that moon shadow is FAR FAR FAR too big, shrink by about a factor of 1000 and you might be closer. The shadow of the moon on the earth's face is only a few miles apart. It is also moving way way way too fast.

actually, the simulation is completely correct on the basis of the size of the moons shadow on the earth. if anything, its actually downsized.

FYI the Shadow IS that large.

The Umbra for this eclipse was just over 200 miles wide. This is what you are thinking as the 'shadow'. This is the point where, if one were on earth looking at the sun, one would see a total eclipse.

What this software shows (allbeit slightly incorrectly, in that the edges of it would be much more gradient in reality) is the Penumbra.

If one were anywhere on earth under that shadow, one would have see at least a partial eclipse.
