no bullsh*t, no glitzy effects, no mahoosive PA system, endless foldbacks and autocues.... just talented musicians with a whole lotta soul. I love it!
I saw Sam & Dave twice in college... 1970. University of VA, then again when the girl I was dating at Madison College invited me up. Just fantastic music.... and a great weekend!
Stax is legendary. Love that song Soothe Me. Born a little too late (1973) to see any of these folks live, but love the music. Can stand the RnB mess out today.
@tomthefunky The Duck still doesn't get the credit he deserves...he's just known in bass circles...bassists that are a little more eclectic know who he is. Duck implemented simple yet incredibly effective bass playing. In my opinion that's the mark of a great bassist. And NO ONE does it better than the Duck. The list of players he has influenced is endless. I don't know if I'd play bass as much as I do if it wasn't for the Duck. So inspiring.
@markeesmith: Couldn't have said it better myself. Although I'm a guitarist, I think most bass players don't get enough credit for their contributions. It seems people just don't listen to bass like they do other instruments. Something about the low frequency just doesn't register with the average person. It takes work to listen to a bassist.
Oh, yeah, I met Duck once. Total asshole!! Maybe I just got him in a bad mood but, damn, he was a dick to his fans. Steve and Booker were great guys.
The first soul song I ever heard was in 1964: Carla Thomas's B-A-B-Y. I instantly became a soul man! With that driving bass and a killer horn section, soul music transcends all languages and cultures. In 1968-70 I had the great chance to meet Booker T, Sam & Dave, and Carla Thomas at various concerts. Between the Beatles and Soul Music, I am so glad to have grown up in the 60s!
I wish I could have been at this gig, but I guess I was born 30 years too late! pure SOUL! All the performers are wicked, and the MG's are ripping it up!... Thanks so much for posting this.
@nicholas0325 duck dunn was adorable in these videos... also proving that a bassist can seem just as if not more talented than the big, shredding, lead guitar
I got to see Sam & Dave in NYC in the 80's. After the show (and many drinks) I cornered Sam to profess my undying and eternal worship. After blathering and slobbering for several minutes, Sam finally cut me off and said "Son, I don't know how to break it to you, but I'm not the real Sam". :O
Turns out, Sam was on the west coast touring with a phony Dave while Dave covered the East Coast touring with a phony Sam... Oh well
Never stop loving this music !!! 58yrs old on 23rd Sept 2011.

Yeah that really upsets me. His drumming was ALWAYS on beat, and he was the only person to make the snare drum sound liks pistol shots.
