the canon and nikons aren't that bad. Sure zeiss is great but I would like to know what actually makes them superior in a way that makes a noticeable difference in the final image. From my 8x10 experience I've found that it's usually a "bigger is better" system for obtaining noticeable quality differences.
YEs you can use a nikon lens or a canon or a jam jar if you prefer - but it kind of defeats the object - doesn't it ? I have used a Red many times and if you don't use anything less than Zeiss primes (preferrably Masters) then you would be wasting your time - I was a fashion photographer for 15 years before I got into films and used a variety of lens and camera arrangements - including the holy grail of 10x8 so know a thing or two about lenses - you only get out what you put in - Right ??
A good copy of a high end still lens is a very capable piece of equipment for this camera. Red One is a "budget camera" remember? I am glad that you know a thing or two about lenses, though
I'm eying up a Scarlet S35 in the future, and hope to use my DX lenses on there. Any guess as to how close the coverage will be.. I'd love to get the GDX and not buy a whole new set.
Oh yes; you are spot on - There is absolutley a clear advantge over using a Nikon lens on a Red or any other high end digital source over a Zeiss prime on say a DV Cam - they surely do have apurpose and the beautiful thing about all of that is that they are widely available, cheap as chips and you can rent a full Red One rig for around a £1K per day - However and this is the biggy - Why use a Red if you are not oututting to cinema and if you are surely you could afford to hire the lenses too !!
@sedona159 alot of people and myself believe Nikon is a better photo camera..with the new dslr video shooting capabilities Canon is superb do to the fact they offer higher fps and have bigger sensors
Hi, I have a cuestion, when you used the nikon lenses, did you have some problem with the 4k format. i´m going to use photo lenses with red one, and i have some doubts. thanks.
No problem with still photo lenses and the RED. Modern, expensive cine lenses such as those by Arri and Cooke have updated mechanics for accurate focus changes but the optics of still photo lenses are comparable.
Yes, you can use any Nikon mount lens including manual SLR lenses with this mount, just make sure that you turn the iris knob out (counterclockwise) so that it doesn't override the iris ring on your manual iris lens. Turn it out so that it stops, then screw it back in a half turn - works great.
The DX sensor is just slightly larger than the sensor on the RED, so DX lenses are a perfect match for the camera. The RED and 35mm movie cameras such as Arri and Panavision have frames that are about half the size of 35mm still film cameras, such as Nikon, Canon, etc.
but you wouldn't necessarily have to set it at a specific stop would you? You could still shoot with a DX between stops so long as it looks good, right?
WOULD A RED BE suitable for filming a wedding ?

I am pretty sure that this mount will not fit the scarlet. Hopefully there will be a equivalent mount for this camera.

Nice job! I wonder which is the better all-round digital SLR solution - Nikon or Canon?
sedona159 2 years ago
I think that is really personal preference now. Both Nikon and Canon cameras are superb.

Whichever your friends have so you can borrow their lenses.

Great info! Do you know if you can use old manual SLR lenses as well? Or are you only able to use lenses with sensors?

You can use any lens that has a Nikon mount, so old manual lenses as well as the newer DX or G series all work with this mount, and with the RED.

Very smart!

A DX lens does not project a full s35 frame does it? I thought they were designed for smaller chip DSLRs?
