@mootbooxle yeah dude i know what you mean when me and my friends get together to jam and record the sessions i had to trim my 12 piece down to about a 6 so i took away like all of my tops cause i didn't have enough mics haha but keep at it dude ur really good!
@ZackDunlapGaming thanks man! Yeah, I have a full kit. This is not even my kit - you can see part of my Rogers kit in my newest video. Can't set up the whole kit in my small studio space, but it's an 8-piece kit altogether. I miss having all those drums sometimes, but it's a lot easier to record a small kit!
@keylinman Thank you! You are looking at my profession. I produce recordings, compose and arrange music for TV/film/theatre, play in three bands, and teach private lessons. Hit me up if I can teach you!
@lethalvenom888 Preciate that! I agree with you, chops is good and all, but if you wanna move mind AND booty, you gotta groove. I used to be a crazy chops drummer! As time goes by I just appreciate good groove most of all though. Then, when you pull out some chops, it really MEANS something, knamean?
Man you are amazing! You make those drums sound brilliant just by knowing how to play properly! And im not saying your drums are bad or anything, I just dont know what they are! You're so funky man, I could listen to you all day!
@mootbooxle wow i never realized it but the one is where its at on the kick i used to do that then i started tryin to do all the fancy stuff in the kick but now its much better to be fancy up top and kep it on the one and sometimes 3
@hirocaster thank you! I think the hats I was using in this vid were some crappy Sabian B8 hi hats that were lying around...I kinda dig the sound though, it really cuts. It wouldn't be good for all styles, but it suits stuff like Funk and breaks. I like that boomy kick sound too! Part of that is the room I did this in...it's a big classroom, real live sounding. The hard compression I put on the recording accentuates the room reverb.
You're technically right, as far as the patterns I'm playing in this vid. But the whole concept of the ONE is more than just technique. It's an approach to rhythm, emphasizing the first downbeat of each measure as the most important beat. THE ONE IS THE KEY TO THE FUNK!
Thank ya! I will be on it...the next drum video I make will deal more with ghost notes, fo sho!
I agree, ghost notes can take a really simple groove to a whole 'nother level. I've actually been trying to use them less lately though, because I used to overuse them. That was a direct result of listening to Billy Cobham, Lenny White, Narada Michael Walden, and Bill Bruford nonstop growing up.
Keep it on the one baby. The only thing though is try to avoid that one on jazz. The philosophy of jazz is to escape the one. It's about the ands and e's and a's.
With "&fmt=18" it does take longer to load so you might be right. And you're not the only one who's not been on here in a while. The crashing economy has me doing other things.
good to see another lefty out there :D I'm grooving the ghost notes gotta work on the buzz or drag. Helps when my snare skin reaaal tight..Ill work on it. Thanks for the motivation!.
you got a great feel for the set, great talent man. Thanks for the vid.
Question I'm lookin to use some of these runs for some hip-hop stuff I'm doing and I just bought a set. Matter of fact I also just bought a Shure SM7B as well.
My question is is that all you used really to mic the set? sounded great. If so what was the position you had it set at?
Thanks for the help, sorry to bug you man, again thanks for these vids
LONG story. Basically I had a lot of health problems last year (one reason I was M.I.A.) that caused me to have to take steroids for several months, and they blowed me up like a toad! And made me eat, eat, eat everything...gained 30 lbs!
Nice! I definitely lack terminology here but can you try a shuffle with overtaking first bass drum stroke, I mean first stroke that falls on the last 8th of the previous bar, to funk things up :) Cheers.
Peace! That's a cool trick - I definitely know what you're talking about, anticipating the downbeat on the kick. That's kind of a Harvey Mason / Mike Clark / Bill Bruford type of approach! I used to play more jazzy syncopated like that, but eventually settled into a (more funky IMO) style where something (usually the kick) always falls on the ONE, just like on James Brown records.
Awesome stuff man. Keep 'em comin. Maybe do some kind of video where you're playin all the instruments, and cut the video back and forth between footage of you playin each part etc, somethin funky in true moot style.
You're a switch-handed drummer? Awesome! I'm also a natural-born lefty who plays switch-handed. I usually play right-handed. but I do about 92-98% of my fills left-handed.
genial mi amigo Moot hace mucho tiempo que no te veia, al parecer ahora daras clases de musica, es genial saber eso porque siempre pense que eras bueno con los instruentos.
Jesus Christ man. I hate you!!! It's unfair how much funk you have swimmin through those veins of yours. My favorite part is when you say "im sorry, I couldn't resist". Please keep these coming and what's up with just a straight up drum solo vid? I found myself wanting to hear you go off on those things without interruption. Peace...Chris B.
Wow, I used to follow Moot when I was soooo into the analog synth thing (still am). I had no idea he did drums too. Just in time for me as now have a set. This cat can lay it down.

Ha! This is great Matt, as always your teachings are very good. I almost forgot how damn good of a percussionist you were! Keep the videos up, maybe it's time for "Explosion" on the drums ~_^
hahaha...I get Mitch Hedberg a lot. No problem here, I think he was hilarious! But in a way, it seems like he kinda had a southern accent, just the way he said certain words. Where was he from anyway? ....goes to Google....
Great video but you need a mic for when you talk...intro music and drums were at the proper levels but I could hardly hear you talk. Good to see yet another video from ya.
You are absolutely right. For whatever reason I decided against using another mic at the last minute. When I was mastering the audio I realized that would have been a good idea. Oh well...next time I'll do that, or go to the trouble of riding the gain when I mix....good call tho.
