  • This is embarrassing... I'm in high school, and one of the best high school orchestras in all of Virginia, and our orchestra class can't even play this as well as a bunch of middle schoolers. And we're playing this for festival in two months. fml.

  • i played this in my middle school class today!!! X)

  • this is a bit too slow and it would be better if they put more accents into it..im playing this for my youth symphony orchestra in Barbados and we have the winds included but this version is not bad good effort !!

  • WHY CANT WE SOUND like this??!?!?!?! oh wait we use winds nvm. see winds this is what you supposed to sound like -.-

  • i am Chinese

  • Thanks for posting! Really helped with my Symphonic Orchestra Placement excerpts! :]

  • my middle school chamber is playing this and they are doing it better

  • the conductor is conducting so fast but the band is playing so slow

  • hehe. i'm playing this for IMEA tomorrow. except the real version. it's haaard. i love the bass section though!! so many of them!!

  • it's an army of basses!

    bass power!

  • Cellos are WIN.

  • Im doing this in a orchestra i go to its pretty fun to play i like it

  • the orchestra im in is workin on this

it just sounds much more complete if there were woodwinds, brass and percussion

  • Comment removed

  • they play behind the beat.... bahaha.... wayyyyy slow as well....

but i do enjoy this arrangement..

  • notice how it is a junior high orchestra. there must be something wrong with you if you think you have to critique junior high orchestras to feel good about yourself.

  • >.> I'm on auto login, so that was my sister, she's all stuck up because she's first chair chellist in varsity, I tell you said that though.

  • Strange. It should be played in full orchestra. The original is much more difficult.

  • Hell of alot better than my orchestra. Also Alot bigger. I like how the bass players are in a line around the back. We dont even have enough bass to do that xD

This is awesome though. Our Highschool played this song.

  • Oh crap! I have to play this for my school orchestra. LOL they don't have any brass or woodwind instruments.

  • Neither Percussion

  • great sound :)

  • Very well done. Bravo on bringing great literature to such a young group. Well rehearsed and well taught.

  • 101 Strings plays Brahms!!.....just kidding...

I'm sure the conductor could have arranged his own music that was more age appropriate than this war horse. The trumpetless chorale feature after the intro was indeed bizarre.

Oh well. Good effort on the students' part.

  • Omg lol. So many basses.

  • great coducting!

  • All of the double basses...

  • If you want to listen to another great concert, search for "Queen Noor Suite"!!!! It's really worth it...

  • sound very good

i'm playing this piece in my orchestra..

    notes are quite hard..

  • wow

    very very good

  • The irritating thing is that for a school orchestra it's played really well, but if I was the headmaster I would have used school funds to brin in some brass and woodwind. It's just so disappointing.

  • no winds... you cant/should NOT do full orchestrated pieces WITHOUT the correct instrumentation.

  • shut ip, its fine

  • dang thise triplet 16th notes are hard, and you guys pulled em off! 10th and 11th graders are having a hard time with them!

  • big bass section.... nice song though. my orchestra has to play it soon. I'm concert master so i have to actually know these songs waaaaaaaaay too much before the concert. '~'

  • Excellent. Your bass section is thumpin', yo.

  • that's a big orchestra

  • hmm not bad for a junior high. whats up the ppl not playing in the back? x.x but hey nice large bass section, my hs orchestra has 12...viola power!

  • @ad0rkkablejoey AHHH I play the viola too!! They did great hear, this is the first youtube orchestra where the viola section didn't suck!

  • 'no I shall not look up from my music, never!'

I think you lost your wind section

  • ummm there is no wind section

  • hahahahhaha

  • OMG sooo many basses.

Ah, it's cool, we have about nine in our festival orchestra.

    xD

  • I'm a cello player for Katy Junior High and first chair. You guys have a great big sound for all of you people. There are some tuning issues in the 1st Violin's.

  • this is actually pretty good for a jr high, too bad no winds/percussion though.

  • Yeah I agree you can't play brahms without the full orchestration (my opinion)

  • o.O SOOO mmannnnyy ppl!!!...ssssooooooo goodd!!! and ALL of the bases!!! GO CELLOS!!!..and violin?

  • GO BASSES!

  • dayum, alot of cellos! YAY CELLO!

  • amazingg. My orchestra isn't nearly as good as yours. hopefully we'll play as well!

  • GREAT GROUP! Nice Sound! Are group wasn't as big as yours!

  • wow there are like 10 basses! wowza

  • is this the simplified version for strings??

  • Yes, this arrangement is for string orchestra and is available from FJH Music Company

  • i was saying no...to that it wwasn't a private school...

  • hey what song is this called?

  • Academic Festival Overture by By Johannes Brahms, arrangement for string orchestra by Robert McCashin

  • thanks!

  • wow, you guys kick but. My orchestra is playing this soon, Hope we sound as good as you guys!

  • I have played this in a full orchestra its amazin, played the trumpet choral in the middle.

but this is awesome well played especially for how old you are.

  • Amazing for junior high. :)

  • I know, it's PERFECT for junior high. Private school no?

  • nope

  • holy crap!!! wow... our high school band just played this and they sucked compared to this! i've heard the beginning of this song before (even before their concert) but i CAN'T remeber where! it's sooo annoying!!! oh well... awesome job! =D n WOW! u guys r middle school... WOW!! amazing for ur level! high five!

  • really of slow, but you are very lucky. my high school orchestra would have mauled this piece. we cant even play the brandenburg concerto thing. i think that your orchestra should try debussy's La Mer.

  • Your orchestra is really big. You are good but kinda slow.....

  • nice job.

    your orchestra is HUGE!!

    O_O

my school's only has like 25 violins, 10 violas, 7 cellos and 3 basses.

  • Same with mine! But our middle school orchestra has a lot more, so...

  • interesting arrangement, I was wondering how the Maestoso (the ending) would be played =P

Very good for a middle school orchestra, though! If you could have picked up the tempo a bit, it would have been nice, it was almost painfully slow.

  • also did anyone notice that the conceret master cant do vibrato but 3rd chair can!?!? not tryin to sound prjudiced but prob 1st just cus hes asian and asians usually r amazing at orchestra. actually iv only had one concert where there wasnt an asian concert master. and even then second chair was asian

  • ugh they kept rotating our concertmaster/mistress (we have 3, because clair from my old school, that redhead from emerson, and jeffrey from harper). so this was, like, our ONE concert with jeffrey as concertmaster.

  • o. yea that kinda explians it i guess. even tho i hav no vlue what schools u r talkin bout but im assuming feeders. and i just realized that was a middle school. that was rly good for middle school. were playin this in hi scholl. its easy to me but my school isnt the greatest.

  • I wouldn't assume that all Asians are amazing at orchestra. It's not something in their genes. It takes hard work.

  • holy crap basses *drool * my current school has one. my last school had four divided among two orchestras now i think it has 2 or 3

  • XD Yay, bass section!! God, how many are there?!

  • 6. *smirks*

  • be nice to the kids...

  • not bad for a JH orchestra

  • Realmente uma grande obra, e uma belissima execução.

  • I think it sound better if they have woodwind and percussion play together

  • jr high splits the orch and band/percussion. no symphony setup..

  • noobs

  • not quite bad for a junior high school though.

  • also, all the phrasing is painfully elongated. articulation and attack are very bad

  • out of tune, unpolished, the technique and expression is terrible. and no winds and percussion? what the hell? i agree with one who calls this orchestra a "noob"

  • yeah way too slow. i played this with LIYO (long island youth orchestra) when we went to Europe this past summer.

  • Im,soo sorry to make this comment, but its true,

This piece sounds like crap when reduced down to string orchestra, it sounds much better with full orchestra.

Not to mention the tempo was too slow and dragged in some parts, and the intonation could have been better.

Brahms already makes things thick, and in this performance, you just made it sound Obese, and thicker.

  • nvr mind, i see the russian sailors already

    srry

  • lol

    im in this orchestra

    and its not n00b

its one of the best...hopefully we can still achieve that this year, although im not sure

by the way mr.hobby there a way to bypass youtube's 10 min limit...ive done it b4, posting anime, although i messed up the episode by converting it to mpeg4 first (ipod)

and i deleted it...it takes too long to upload though. can i request the russian sailors?

    i like that one..

and chevrontruck, its not nice to swear

  • for a junior high/middle school orchestra this is actually pretty good

  • i was listening, and after 30 seconds i finally realized why it sounded strange to me: it's an arrangement for string orchestra lol

we're currently playing this as well (i'm the principle cellist of the west australian youth philharmonic orchestra) though i don't like the arrangement, i congratulate you for playing this piece

re: to the lack of vibrato:

i've been listening without watching the video, and i have to agree the melody seems to lack lustre,

but hey, everybody has their own way.

  • Who ever the fuck said we don't have vibrato your fucking blind. And sorry we're not into the fucking music. We just don't really like it.

It's not our fault the seconds learn slower. That's why they're in the seconds.

  • n00b?

  • Dude, I'm in this.

  • if u r in this u must be n00b

  • Why would I be a newbie if I'm in this orchestra?

  • because you suck

  • is this n00b?

  • I beg you to post videos of the highschool symphony orchestra

    especially since i'm a member.

  • I plan to do that for this coming year. There is a video page on the new web site (with nothing in it....yet) Unfortunately they did not video the Finale Concert from last year. I could do something from the Wennberg Festival. Any request for a specific piece? (Remember there is a 10 minute limit for YouTube)

  • darn

so the cello concerto is out of the question?

  • Thank you for posting a video of this song. It reminds me of national academic tournaments from High School. Even without the memories, the piece is beautiful.

  • um, is it me or the violins are NOT moving at all. plus you cant just always stare at the part wen ur playing, u have to look at the conducter, i mean check out the posture!PLus theres no vibrato, no nothing.

  • Which part are you commenting on? (what time on the video?) During the quiet parts they are not moving their bows much. You are right about them not looking at the conductor enough. They got yelled at about that all year! Many of them have not learned vibrato yet. It is still Jr High. A number of them have though, particularly in the 1st violins and cellos.

  • i have to admit my comment was quite harsh. About the moving part though, i meant that sometimes you should use the hole bow so u can get a richer sound, right? well i think so. Maybe i shouldve taken in consideration that these guys are in junior high.

  • maybe no vibrato in the violins, but there is in the cellos

  • true

  • so wht happened to the rest of the orchestra lol

  • I assume that you mean other than the strings? In this school district orchestra is stings only through Jr High. When they get to High School there is a Symphony Orchestra with full instrumentation. They also have a Chamber Orchestra that is strings only.
