The heck with handing out water! There's nothing like a steaming hot cup of black coffee in a structurally unsound parking garage after an earthquake.
Thank you so much for posting this. It came out when I was around 10 years-old & about a dozen first-hand earthquakes ago (I'm a lifelong Californian & will never forget the first,1971 Sylmar) memories!!!!
I'm with you guys, I can't get over the "shelter" being in a basement. Hello. It's an earthquake, not a tornado or hurricane! -:-( A football field or somewhere else entirely out in the open is the natural spot, at least temporarily until everyone CAN be moved out of town into the open.
@CaptainGoofysstash I cant agree with you more, putting them an unstable building is the wrong thing to do, a football field or opening field would of been best.
Check out that vintage mall!! The brown tiles, brick walls and wood railings. You dont see them like that anymore. We have a downtown mall alot like that one in our city with some of those features still intact. When we had a big hurricane some people including me took shelter there. Those down town malls were built to be indoor town squares so naturally people would gather there for shelter.
@Destroyer470 Do you ever wonder why Japan has so many pointless and random parks? You just answered that question. You're not the only one with logic! Congrats!
Great to see a classic disaster movie about stereo typically casted stupid people acting stupid, especially at 5:30, with psycho soldier, former child evangeist Marjo Gortner. The basement scene is a homage to The Poseidon Adventure, I think. All disaster movies are ensemble cast, paint-by-the-numbers.
Right on!! Being in the sub-basement of a big building after a major earthquake does not seem like a very smart idea. But, luckily people did survive while being trapped down there until they were rescured.
Oh by all means, lets get everybody down into the sub-basement of the giant, heavy concrete building. That's especially safe during an earthquake. Ple\us. there's hot coffee and food!
@megaswenson Admittedly Earthquakes and 3 ton bombs are different, still the London Underground had no causalties during the Blitz., for 5 years. Personally I'd head to high ground with no buildings at all.
@locheelad2 That is your safest move, getting to the highest ground you can (though not up any mountain.) Stay away from buildings and military officers.
@megaswenson Ah yes, one would feel luxorious staying in a fancy mall, yet, none knew the danger of staying inside a building made of tons of concrete...
