Really like this this rendition. There are many other good performances of it also,
each with a slightly different take. It is enriching to be able to appreciate a number of different interpretations. One dimensional comparisons are often inadequate, even meaningless.
Thomas Allen is always fantastic as Don Giovanni (he is most certainly the best Don Giovanni of his generation) and to also see his Don in leather is...well...something! *resists the urge to faint* Just adds to his interpretation's dangerous blend of charm and recklessness. Thanks for posting.
That is the essence of The Don, he must be what women desire and what men want to emulate. Even if you know he is an utter b******d, you have to like him. The opera goes for nothing if you don't. The productions that fail are the ones that make him appear too evil to be likeable
I LOVVVEEEE Thomas Allen! The only weird thing for me, is that there's so obviously not a cruel or harsh thing about his presence at all (in person or on stage), so there's some cognative dissonance in how awful he acts.
Such a pity that they did not film Allen's Glyndebourne performance with Haitink. What a superb production it was, and Allen gave his greatest performance.
But I wouldn't trust that Don Giovanni in leather! He looks too dangerous to convince innocent women to go to his house! :-) And Zerlina looks a bit like an older married woman with lots of principles. i'm not convinced actually... But maybe I saw Liliana Nikiteanu (in the Jurgen Flimm production) toooo many times. That one (with Rodney Gilfry as Don Giovanni) is the best Don Giovanni production I ever saw!
what one sees the first time really effects ones views about other performances... i think zerlina is very apt here.. very pretty.. and the leather makes it brilliant
I dont like Allen's Voice... I mean, he's amazing but i dont care much for it. i Love the Rost's Voice is Pretty though. I love this duet though. Great Opera. actually towards the end of the duet Allen has a pretty amazing voice. Great! -Thomas
Thomas Allen is my favourite Giovanni - Andrea Rost is great, too - and the whole Hampe production is fantastic. I've got the DVD, and the only one who is weak is Don Ottavio.

@franco96544 è bravissimo, ma nell' aria dello chamagne non riesce mai a pronnuciare chiaramente "ancor quella "e senza alcun ordine.

If you were an innocent young girl, would you go running off with a man who seemed cruel or harsh?

This whole production is excellent...Feruccio Furlanetto is a hysterical Leporello, and he and Allen are great together.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Thomas Allen as Don Giovanni! And Rost is perfect, because she sounds so fragile.
