  • Wow, just wow!! I love this over the Dinah Washington one, she sounds like she really feels it! Love love lover it!!! x

  • what a woman! the white people hospital would'nt take her and it is so stupid. i hope 2011 won't be like that for anybody, regardless of their money, or color, or age.

  • The lyrics are badass.

  • Really great early sound fo the Blues and "comedic Jazz" back up. Love it!

  • love the 'sizzle' at the end from the crackly grooves :o)

  • There’s something truly beautiful about the depth of the lyrics and the emotion Bessie Smith brings to them. She was always fantastic at finding the pain and vulnerability in a song.

  • this is wounderful

  • Sorry ebonics4everyone, I made a fairly uncontentious remark about the song. I wasn't making any big claims. I wasn't trying to knock anyone off their perch - but you feel the urge to contradict me. You are of course welcome to do this but I can't understand the point you are trying to make.

  • Wow. These lyrics are positively Satanic. She wants to die quick, so she can burn in hell? Iron Maiden, eat your heart out!

  • I first heard this song on Mark Lamaar's 'God's Jukebox@ on bbc radio 2

    Fantastic !!

    thanks for posting :-)

  • I like thi s version even more than that by Dave Bromberg.

  • I love bessie smith and this song haha. such an amazing voice

  • Overpowered by guilt...

  • WOW! That is INTENSE! I Love it!!!

  • Love this song, but I think Dinah Washington may have improved on it. Hers is not as raw vocally, but with her video she tells the story with her eyes.

  • @2conquer i don't suppose bessie would have had much of a chance to tell the story with her eys as this was 1927 .. not many tv shows on then :p lol

  • @blinkingblonde No crap. People in general are so historically illiterate it's laughable. No offense, but pick up a book or something.

  • @ebonics4everyone lol..pick up a book?? ... ty for the advice ... but my advice to you is took pick up the thread!! ..

i.e see what remark I was responding to :p

  • hear also david bromberg version if you can find a decent recording of that

  • What a frightening song. The distilled essence of remorse.

  • DISTILLED ESSENCE OF REMORSE! That is beautiful ....

  • @irateofwatford Yes, and Black Sabbath thought they were the first band to sing about burning in Hell. Hardly.

  • My father told me Bessie Smith was left to die in the street after anaccident because she was black. What a waste of life and talent!! God help us all from man's inhumanity to man.

  • zexi

  • I love this song!

  • This is damn good
