Buy frozen chicken in bulk instead. Way more cost effective I would reckon. Only small quantity "food animal" I can think of right now are rabbits. They multiply fast, have a decent amount of meat of them and are relatively easy to take care of because they dont really need a huge space.

If you buy gold now you might risk "locking" it for a long time unless you want to sell at a loss. The price is already inflated and if it drops, it will drop hard.

Here in Portugal most of us many times just say "fuck it!!" just bring on the IMF and stop this nonsense. So the sovereign debt bubble burst soon, we won't take part of currency battles. And most important, learn a big lesson...Today numbers came out showing economy grew 1.5%, making Portugal the only country with good news. people here are not that affraid because we don't spend much now. Most of us live the two last weeks of the month with 10 to30€. and we pay 0.60€ for 1/4 milk....

My Advice, for what it's worth, is to get out of the city, prepare for deflation. Work on a farm, forget the degree for now. Hold some gold, too late to buy now, wait for a correction. First of all: Welcome back Donovon.

Now then i don't see things the same way. I don't believe we're heading towards a "apocalyptic" style economic crash. Even if we did, investing in gold won't do much because people will be trading in bullets not precious metal if it came to that.

More to the point, i think the US is heading towards Fascism (If its not already there), and this will reflect in its economy.

As for myself, I'm planning to buy a house ,In the countryside.

I don't think we should be retreating into survivalism. We need to be talking and thinking about political strategies. If the economy crashes, you think everyone is just going to slink off back to their house and try to raise chickens? No way, people are going to be in the streets and there will be civil strife. The workers' revolution is going to be on the order of the day.

Do not think that you are a burden to your parents. When the tshtf, they may need you help and protection. When living in a hard time it is always better to have someone around to support each other. You can always create a small farm at you parents' place and all of you can survive together.

if it were me, i'd not want to be living in your hood when tshtf. having said that, it also depends on how connected you are to your neighbors, because we'll need to work together, not turn against each other. i agree with planting as much food as possible, and getting into survival mode. i'm not there yet myself, but the wheels are turning. keep us updated on your plans.
