  • Buckley referred to his sensuous rendition as a homage to "the hallelujah of the orgasm." He explained in a Dutch magazine: "Whoever listens carefully to 'Hallelujah' will discover that it is a song about sex, about love, about life on earth. The hallelujah is not a homage to a worshipped person, idol or god, but the hallelujah of the orgasm. It's an ode to life and love." Buckley also admitted to having misgivings about his sensual version and he hoped that Cohen wouldn't get to hear his version.

  • You see the dislike bar ? yeah me neither!

  • @ihatesocialnetworful You're really right. Respect. =D

  • I can feel the soul in this song, it's amazing. You're amazing Jeff Buckley. What a beautiful song.

  • Why can't I play this song in my playlist??? :(

  • I think I realy did break the replay button it wont let me replay it :(

  • The song means something different to everyone. That's why its a song.

  • it calms tou makes you just sit and listen and few songs can get humans to slow down

  • 3>

  • <3

  • Hallelujah for this song.

"And it's not a cry that you hear at night. It's not somebody who's seen the light! It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah!"

  • the most beautiful song written in English

  • (^^^)

  • This person is pretty good!!!!!!!

  • people its much more than being in shrek its about Davids life!!! in the bible

  • 11 people are mad cause they fell for a Beth Sheba, too!

  • disliking this song is like not liking shrek

  • House brought me :) sayd i need an NMRA 2 ^^

  • the O.C :)

  • lol shrek is where i heard this. love that movie

  • I want this song played at my funeral!

  • @1500cookiemonster why the hell would you want a song that is about sex played at your funeral....................?

  • oustanding song.

  • Whether about God, sex, or missing someone this song is ultimately about one thing:

    Love.

    It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah.

  • It's not about sex people it's about the story of king David and Delilah the story in the bible

  • It's just a song who cares about wht it's about

  • Lol, I wasnt saying there was anything wrong with it being about sex... I just thought the comment about the person playing this at their mothers funeral was odd. This is a song about a man (who has suffered a lot of pain) missing his sex partner... read the lyrics... I love this song, but I wouldnt play it at my moms funeral

  • When I'm sad i listen to this song

  • well this song actually is about missing someone, but hes missing his lover so it technically about sex just feel the lyrics and you will understand the true deeper meaning. this is a truely heartfelt song.

  • What the hell is wrong with you ppl??? Why is everyone nowadays taking everything sexually?? This is a song about lost love and broken hearts and missing someone !! Sickos!!

  • I can't stop singing this song...

  • I honestly don't care if this song is about sex, since it has a deeper meaning to me, and i interpret it differently. But everyone's different right? :)

  • @popsaitsa I guess thats really what music is all about right? How it affects the listener? But I do think the writer was talking about an ex-lover... Thats what they lyrics say anyway. But I guess however you want to interpret it is up to you...

  • You people do realize this song is about sex right?

  • OH MY GOD! You have totally enlightened me, I've heard this song a crazy amount of times and only now have I really paid attention to the lyrics. Its kinda weird that its about sex but oh well its still pretty awesome. :)

  • @carsan1019 I dont think there is anything wrong with it being about sex. I love the song but I just think its funny that people listen to it and draw there own conclusions about what it means, when if you read the lyrics it pretty self explanatory... lol. Its a great song!

  • when someone leaves you they take every part of you with them.

except 2 things: your memories and you smile

  • Wow this is way better than the remake.. but they're both still really good.

  • 'no description available' - because it doesn't need one.

  • 11

  • @vickhallam12....I am on your side. I think it is a beautiful song and people can interpret it as they wish and just enjoy. I was just trying to enlighten the numerous comments by posters wanting to know the meaning of the song. I could care less about arguing or pushing my views...I'm just giving info to those that wanted it.

  • super pretty, just block the lyrics :)

  • @darthzinvader Additionally, an article by BBC and The Rolling Stones agrees that the song refers to an orgasm in the later verses. The guy that wants to play this at his mother's funeral has an issue...lol. I would make sure I understood a song before I played it for my mother. Maybe the song "I Can Only Imagine" is more appropriate. Thanks for your support!!!

  • @smoore2422 Orr....people could just have a CLEAN mind and stop argueing if its about orgasms or not and just ENJOY the BEAUTIFUL song! Not trying ot be rude, but seriously.

  • @smoore2422 While a message is intended for the listener by the artist, it is up to the listener to interpret the lyrics and find out what that message is. A single song can mean many different things to many different people

  • @darthzinvader the lyrics "you saw her bathing on the roof, her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you" refers to the adulterous affair between King David and Bathsheba. The lyrics "she cut your hair" refers to Delilah cutting Samson's hair after she realized his strength was in his hair. The lyrics "it goes like this, the fourth, the fifth, the minor fall and the major lift" relates to the cord progressions of the song, written as a cross between gospel music and a waltz.

  • Love is not a victory march...

  • house

  • Such a touching song. @smoore2422 Really, people think that? Wow.

  • @MaddyV22856 READ THE LYRICS TO THE SONG!!

  • Esta canción me hace llorar

  • @thecoolguy

Search this song on Wikipedia and read the interpretations part. There are a lot of religous references but many also think it is a sexual song about orgasm. I love the song!

  • @smoore2422 thank God, and thank you Cool Guy, because it seems that the rest of these people posting comments have no idea about what the song is about. In addition, some idiot with an Odepus complex says he'll be playing it at his mother's funeral!!

  • @smoore2422 Its a song that deals with the complexities of a man who is in Love/Lust/infatuated with a woman he no longer have, and She cares nothing for him... She may not even be real...

The word "Hallelujah" should be a joyous word which is declared as that and a cry for help at the same time; carrying 2 meanings.

  • Im 12 and made a cover so I would appreciate it if you would watch it, thank you

  • A lot of this song really doesn't make sense... I can't tell what EXACTLY this is about :/

  • @TheCoolGuy367 Its about a type of suffering between a Man and the woman he loves/lusts after. And some idiot poster is going to play it for his mother when She dies! And there are 77 other idiots who gave him a thumbs up for that comment! wtf is this world coming too?!

  • 6:01 scared me D:

  • @iwalktherain: If you have nothing nice to say don't say anything at all

  • Read Psalms, my friends, King David !!

  • I can't listen to this song without crying..

  • I don't understand the lyrics :(

  • anyone who knows who it was who wrote hallululjah plz tell me?

  • @soysuren100 Leonard Cohen, as it says at the beginning of the video...

  • To the people who disliked this video, well you don't really care for music, do ya?

  • this song gives me tears

  • Please watch my cover of this its a beautiful song

  • Dear Shane. It's been 5 years and 10 men ago... But you were the only other man I've been in love with. Remember when you thought I was asleep, but our song came on, Hallelujah? You brushed my tears away with your fingers and It was as if nothing happened. But what happened on the Grey house bus back to Sacramento? You lost a love like Johnny and June to avoid an ending like Sid and Nancy.

  • i just found out some of these verses are from bible stories

    Nope, I cant either! :)

  • HALLELUJAH!

  • I was just skyping my friend who moved across the country.. and i put this song on, and just started singing with.

I ended up crying and I couldn't explain what was wrong with me to him. All I could say was that I was happy.

  • 7 people have never seen someone get buried to this song

  • To the 7 people who disliked this video...

    Shame on you.

  • I guess nothing beats the original. =)

  • @singsforjoy13 "And I've seen your flag on the marble arch/And love is not a victory march/It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah" is my favorite. It always seems to make me cry when I think about what can never be...

  • Dear Mother. On the distant day that Jesus decides to take you from me and transfer your soul from this life, I shall play this song at your funeral. I love you will all my heart and I swear by the love in my heart and the thoughts in my mind, that I will ALWAYS love you mom. I shall never, ever forget your memory, the love you've gave, through good and bad times, you held my hand when I was afraid. I shall love you always.

    Love, your son; Ben.

  • @TheNewspaperBoi may i say? hallelujah!

  • @TheNewspaperBoi That's so sad. I pray that the good Lord delivered you through the sad times and the painful ones to the other side where you were able to stand again and be brave for your Mum and family.

  • @TheNewspaperBoi wow u must be a gr8 song...but instead of telling us this u shuld tell yr mom :D im sure shell love it!

  • @TheNewspaperBoi Did you actually read the lyrics to this song? (other than the word "Hallelujah")?

People used to do the same thing w/the Police's "Every Breath you take" - people thought it was a love song, but its clearly a song about a stalker.

Our educational system is in DEEP trouble!

  • i prefer a girl sing it but this song always make me cry, thats so amazing!

this is not a happy xmas for me, but xmas songs give to me more efforts

    merry xmas to everyone

  • this is what i call REAL music...

This song really have something sacred. am i right?

  • this is the best verson by far

  • Of which, the fifth is about agnosticism, or denial of christianity, saying that no one goes to heaven and there may or may not be a God, so yup, that's my interpretation

  • The first two verses refer to david of the Bible, when he was younger he played his harp and it pleased God and he played for the king of Israel to calm him down to sleep, the second verse referring to when he's older and sees Bathsheba bathing on the roof and he calls her to his palace and gets her pregnant so he ultimately kills her husband and marries her. I'm not entirely sure what is meant by the 3rd verse but the fourth seems to be about sex, very thinly veiled verses aboout sex, or lack

  • for people who don't yet know or cant read, this song is about an orgasm.

  • Pure simple perfection. Isn't it funny how "old songs" never really get old?

  • 6 persons are so stupid...

  • I am not here because of Shrek I am here because Joe Brooks brought me here

  • Can someone please explain the meaning of this song? :) xx

  • @RecklessMetalLover I think with any piece of music or art, people will interpret it differently. For example, I think of someone struggling with their faith, yet finding out the true meaning of faith and love at the same time. That's just me though. :)

  • I do genuinely think this is the best song ever written. Ever.
