ONLY...AS IF!! Phil obviously hasn't taught much golf. Ask your average non-athletic, uncoordinated person to try "hinge and hold" and they'll hinge and "unhinge" before contact. Place them into an exaggerated set-up with extra weight on the front foot, extra shaft lean toward the target and even a slight grip modification (weaker top hand, stronger lower hand) no wrist hinge and these people can chip quite well. Instructors need to adapt.
Phil is supremely talented, not all can do as he does.
All these comments that are negative to this video, yet I guarantee none of you have ever shot low sixties. And on top of that you are talking about one of the greatest if not the greatest short game players to ever live. I'll tell you what, I am a decent short game player, but I am definitely going to change my chipping method to accomodate this level of perfection.
@Joshman775 if I had to choose only one gotta go with a 56 degree. It allows you some roll as well as a little softer landing than a pitching wedge. In my bag I actually carry a pitching wedge, gap wedge, 56 and 60 degree and I take the 2 iron out to accommodate the extra wedge. I figure you are around the green way more than a spot you would need a 2 iron and you can adjust your shots accordingly. Also practice around the green with a friends or at a demo day and see what's right for you.
What Phil is trying to say, in his own words (he is a pro so the feel of the club comes naturally) is that hinging your wrists will give you the ability to not only use the weight of the club to your advantage, but you are starting the club head so far behind your hands at the top of the backswing, that it makes it much more feasible for you to lead with the hands.. Remember, with golf, feel involves letting your body move with the swing. Key to a good short game to to relax the body and hands!
Great chipping technique, but I think "Hinge and Hold" is a bad name because you never want to have the word "hold" in your head. I would call it "Hinge and Accelerate". It is the acceleration that keeps the club head from flipping past the hands - not a "hold". Don't hold! Accelerate!
Everyone chips like this at the pro level. There is really no other good method to chip it. You take a 52 - 60 degree wedge, hinge and hold, and presto! People who think otherwise are obviously shitty chippers.
And to people saying you don't want to break your wrists...what? You know your wrists always break (hinge) during any swing of the club, right?
Well, theres many different ways to chip, you could maintain your wrists throughout the entire chip, but when you hinge it, it makes it alote easier to estimate lenght
@f0cusen when the clubhead passes your hands it's a recipe for disaster for nearly every type of shot. you might not need to hinge, but you certainly don't want any business with that leading edge or the ground before the ball.
@f0cusen....Hinge and Hold transalted simply means don't let the clubhead go past your hands on the follow through when chipping. However you arrive at the ball, to better control distance in chipping, you can't let the clubhead release past the hands.
(cont) i've chipped better with firmer wrists, and when chipping with the shorter clubs the hinge and hold works better. I guess i'm saying the more the loft the more you hinge, the less loft the less you hinge! Would love to hear your opinions, Please Discuss!!
Ok going out on a limb here because Phil is one of the best golfers in the world, and here it comes, but!, "the only way to chip" ?? hmmm I mean there have been some great chippers of the ball that never break there wrists at all right??, Mind you I think Phil tends to do 95% of his chipping with his wedges, so in that case breaking the wrists off the ball and holding off through the shot probably works great for wedges, but in my own experience i've found say when chipping with a 4 or 5 iron
@Dreama40 people dont often use 4 or 5 iron maybe like pitch or 9 iron but how you gonna argue with maybe the best short game iron player to maybe ever play
Ok enter that one in the golf commandments I believe you Phil.

While the Hinge and Hold is not the only way to chip, it's a good way

What is the all around best wedge loft for around the green/ <50yard shots ?
Currently all I have is a pitching wedge.

My buddy breaks his wrist on his chips... dead accurate. I have no idea how he does it, but he does.
sidnomis1 5 months ago
@sidnomis1 because it's probably not a chip shot, he's may be just throwing it up a bit

The perfect training aid to perform his method is the Pure Ball Striker. It's damn cheap, too

"hinge and don't let the clubhead pass your hands before impact" was probably not as catchy of a name.

Hinge and Hold is not the only proper technique that works there is not only one way to chip.

dschultz6072 9 months ago
@dschultz6072 I did not say anything about that but I do agree you need a little wrist hinge when you are chipping for feel.
f0cusen 9 months ago
@dschultz6072 Did I say that? I'm aware of that but that only happends when you stop rotating your trunk.
f0cusen 6 months ago
@f0cusen and what method is that? The hinge and flip? The hinge and shank? The hinge and skull?
badgolfer997 6 months ago
@badgolfer997 You don't need that much hinge you can keep the club low to the ground and use the trunk more more rotation and not so much hinge.
f0cusen 6 months ago
@f0cusen i agree with that, i like to let the weight of the clubhead go ever so slightly on the way through and i've always chipped very well
