Wear an NIOSH approved respirator...SILICOSIS concrete dust contains silica which lodges deeply in your lungs and is never expelled. The lung tissue scars around it, sequestering it for the remainder of your life. Don't be cheap with your health. THINK
Epic failure for not wearing a respirator! Until it's fully mixed, a respirator should be worn. If you wonder how to talk into the mic while wearing a respirator, that's what voice overs is for :)
heydoing 2 square blocks on my sidewalk measuring 127 inches all togethor, im doing 3inches and only need this to pass inspection for the house i bought.i got like 20bags of80 pound and am renting a little mixer and just going to use a sledge hammer to bust the old concrete.first time doing this so can i just get a bucket of water and measure how much water i need per 80pound bag and dump water first then dump bag then turn on mixer? how would you go about doing this?
The author is joking and poor-skilled in mixing. First of all if you are using power mixer you have to start it to spin BEFORE loading a components, or it is risk of overload a motor and broke the powermixer. Also, add a little bit of water before adding cement and other components then add more water to prepare concrete.
thats one way of doing it but my way is 3 sand 3 chippin and 1 cement repeting that 3 times when it is then layed it goes rock solid and thas how i do it :)
@SolarCoordinates if you don't have enough water, there isn't enough water to react with the cement and you concrete will be weak. You need the right amount of water.
@rombaft Right, but he is nowhere near that point, which is, generally speaking, about 2/3s as much water as the instructions say. Adding more water than this decreases strength, but they tell you to add more to increase workability, making the mixing process quicker and easier.
@SolarCoordinates whatever, the guy mixing in this movie is aa noob anyway, you don't buy premixed concrete (to expensive) , but cement, sand and gravel. A simple rule for stron concrets = 1 part cement, 2 parts sand, 3 parts gravel .
Also prefered to add some additives to smoothen the mixture
One piece of equipment you'll always want when mixing cement, either by hand or the handy mixer: Dust mask. Especially if you employ the sloppy dump and go method some of us do! Thanks expertvillage for a helpful video!
Water first, then sand, then your cement type. Your mix seems okay for casting. It could have a bit more water to make it flow easier into corners and such, but as always depends on what you're going to use it for.
I find putting the water in first works better , add the cement second so the water mixes completely and then the sand , 3/4 of the required sand and it starts to get to the right consistancy and then the rest .
Even with premixed bags like this the right amount of water first , add 3/4 of the bag , a few seconds and it's mixed and then the rest .
Same theory with mixing a cake , no one knows when you have dry clumps in cement but a ball of unmixed flour in a cake ....
We just recently purchased a concrete mixer and you showed us so much we didn't know. You gave us confidence to do our pave-it-yourself paving in our huge yard... Thanks so much!!
North Construction in Leeds did a nasty bodge job of laying my base. They used ready mixed concrete and added buckets + buckets more water in the garden to make it more workable. It over-wetted the concrete causing it to sag and become inconsistant when dried. Proper hardcore wasn't even used I learnt later.. They won't put it right and Its wasted a lot of my money. Wished I'd have let you do mine !
I have that mixer and it's cheap (China's best), but effective. It does spin quickly so watch out if you pour while it's on (which is the recommended method). It will sling concrete out in several directions.
If you have the manpower, get a delivery of wet concrete and you'll be done in a flash. If you're a homeowner who has to do everything yourself (no extra hands), bags are convenient way to space the work out over several days or weekends. $3.50 per bag isn't so bad.
How are these people experts? For starters he's using rapid set which is only good for post holes, a slab with that stuff would crack up BAD! Even if he had the right crete it would cost a fortune to mix it all with bags. Easiest way is to get whats called "premix" from a landscape supplier its sand and aggregate already mixed (not in a bag) you can get delivery from yards for about $5-10. Throw that in the mixer and use cement out of the bag to an appropriate ratio depending on the application
This is a great video. Thanks for sharing. Now that you showed it to me, the process looks pretty easy. I always thought it was a lot more difficult. Also, that mixer is only about 250 bucks. I will give it a try.
yeah you should of put water befort he concrete and turn on the mixer and let it spin and while its doin that you put the concrete in and then u add more water if needed
ppe ftw!

Just one thing guys. Concrete is the result of mixing CEMENT, sand and water.
It is only concrete once it dries.
He is mixing a bag of CEMENT. A good all round general purpose mix for concrete for a base for slabs or a garden shed:
1 cement
2 sharp sand
3 coarse aggregate
Mix with water to produce a consistency that should pour easily.
Good luck.

That mix looks too thick for making smooth slabs. I guess it depends on what you're doing. That mix would be perfect for a post hole though.
