he should've added a sector gear chip to the sector gear if you want a high ROF, basically it strengthens the sector gear nub that pulls back on tappet plate.
Yeah, that's right, You should tighten the box with a few screws as you install each set of shims per gear, then move on to the next gear. Simply placing the box togrther my hand is not going to work.
Just a question, I have to buy new gears and a piston - I have a Tokyo Marui m4, will the gears you used work on my gun also? It's a version 2 gearbox I believe.
Thanks to this great video of yours I have been able to fix and shim my rifle gearbox on the first attempt , only took 7 hours lol! Cheers fellas you saved me a few bob!
Good video. I've been shimming for a while now, but it's always nice to go back and watch this kind of stuff. When I shim, I like to have a variety of shim thicknesses. If you need something as thin as .1mm, go for G&P. The packs have .1mm and .2. That way you can have eve more precise shimming.
@Zhaobertino Trial and error buddy. You want the least amount of play possible between each gear. They will also spin very easily. Be sure to screw in the gearbox screws when testing each gear. When you test fire you gun, it should sound very smooth. The only whine should only come from the motor.
You should try a different technique...its the best, to shim the bevel gear first, according to the perfect height of the motor (pinion and bevel should have the largest contact area possible), then shim the Sector Gear to interfere perfectly with everything, and then shim the spur Gear, so that it has the best contact ares possible with both gear's teeth
excited for the piston episode. I opened up a broken gun and forgot it was upgraded. I struck gold and found a really nice piston, piston head, and cylinder, lucky me!
When I test the shimming, I do it with grease in place and fully tighten the screws on the box in the process. Only way to be sure. Lithium grease is very poor compared to a decent Teflon grease. I have seen Lithium grease go crumbly and lose its ability to lubricate. I would not use it under any circumstances. Its very old fashioned and outdated.
@IEAirsoft Certainly! Finish Line bike range Teflon grease is amazing. I use the Ceramic Teflon for gears and metal to metal contact. The regular white Teflon grease for other areas. Its 100% rubber safe, does not break down, crumble, fail or displace with pressure, cold, heat or liquid. Its easy to source and you get a lot more than airsoft specific branded products like the Guarder grease. You also get enough to last you a long time. Its proven quality. I would not use anything else.
just one point to consider, ive noticed with the bevel gear shimming, you can end up getting it pretty tight, and like said above with it causing your motor to heat up. if any of you carry a MOSFET with an Active Breaking unit, it will end up blowing up.
another point, use lithium grease on the gears, its used for mountain bike gears and chains, so is a durable and great grease. my set-up has lasted over 2 years now. and i think its all to do with the grease and shimming job.
ger great tutorials. chris is a wiz when it comes to the nuts an bolts but he is a crap shot....lol, just kiddin he makes it look quite easy. i have brought more bags full of guns into chris to get him to fix my messy bag of curiosity.
these vids are going brilliantly i am almost completely confident that i could take apart the gun and put it back together with the help of these vids. they are definatly the best on youtube. please keep up the great work i love this channel.
When you are shimming the gearbox and you are finished with one gear I recommend to fasten the the halves together with at least to screws to ensure there is not too tight shimming on the gear. Although it does not seem too serious, this little difference this makes in distance between the bearings/bushings may cause youre gearbox to jam.
Also when you shim the sector after the spur make sure there is no grinding on the surfaces between the sector and the spur.
Absolutely correct. What's more, that effect of the shimming becoming tighter when you screw the lid tight, will be even more apparent in "flimsier" gearbox shells (and by flimsier, I'm talking about cheaper, chinese gearboxes or gearboxes from budget lines such as the CA sportlines).
Good series btw oddy! Nice and simple rundown of gearbox tech.

so what exactly are shims? are they just special washers to adjust the height of your gears?

Should one grease up the fucker after doing all this, with silicon gel spray etc?
I'll probably try to do this to my gun if/when it breaks , I study at a tech univ... how hard can it be? :d
