technically, a drowning is where the person dies due to breathing in a liquid. a NEAR drowning is where the person survives it. and a mask with a bit of water in is one of the things bsac, padi, and pretty much everything every other dive organisation teach you to handle
Even with the DSD (Discover Scuba Diving) students, they have to be able to do a partial flood and clear of the mask. If you weren't a certified diver, getting a certification, or going through a DSD class, you had no business being down there. A lack of basic skills like always exhaling even when you don't have a regulator in your mouth can kill you in even 10 feet of water.
btw... you didn't drown. Drowning refers to a fatal aspiration of water. Non fatal is known as a near drowning.
i agree babfish13, but there are some good dive story sites on the net too. Try the myscubastory site. They have real life dive stories and dive accident videos. Put myscubastory into google, and its the first result.
Water in the mask? So what? If you are at least an OWD you must be able to swim with no mask on without panicking and of course you must know how to clear it. Can't say for everyone but my every class in the pool (plus intro) included the "clearing the mask" lesson. No skills = no open water diving. Otherwise u're dead.
yea hottiesurfing24, but there are also quite good dive stories on the net too . try the myscubastory site. type myscubastory into google and its the first one
all divers should be able to dive without a mask, let alone one that fills with water. learn your skills better before taking to the water there hombre.
During my scuba cert in Monterey bay, one of the students did a Mask clear as part of the training at 45ft depth, and inhaled water. He immediatley staretd spazzing out and headed towards the surface. Our instructor grabbed him back down and jammed the release on his regulator to free flow air and put it in his face. He regained focus and coughed underwater for several minutes, then resumed the dive. it was amazing and quite an eye opener!
@eKtechniX- Same thing almost happened to me couple weeks ago (I just got open water certified). We were doing mask flooding at 35 ft in Pacific Ocean (VERY cold & murky sometimes) and I was a little nervous and accidentally snuffed the water in my nose, so I grabbed the instructor to hold myself down while I regained focus on breathing till I could reclear. Salt water sucks.
if hed had proper training he would have learnt how to cope with a mask flood or loss first in the pool then on several open water dives...DONT DO DIVES IF YOUR ARENT READY!!!!! wait until you are 100% confident with all the little things like this that can happen but if you arent prepared for can kill you
@lolergramCCCP - From the way you write it's not tough to see who's a cunt face here. Has nothing to do with bringing or not bringing more people to the sport you moron. I think even the PADI recreational 101 course teaches people how to handle a flooded mask... If it's people with this level of skills you want in to the sport, then better not doing it and avoid the real emergencies.
You my friend, should not dive! A mask is NOT a vital piece of diving equipment. One can still breathe without one! Anyone prone to panic has no business under water or piloting an aircraft.
hahaha all these responses r stupid.. if ur mask fills with water. push on ur mask at ur forehead.. look up and blow out ur nose.. omg.. all the water is gone.. don't practice scuba without a mask.. just pop ur mask and practice clearing it.. wow..
Looks like you got help pretty fast. Thats allways good. My girlfriend has a problem with one of her norstrils, so clearing the mask is also a problem for her if it is completely full. I have myself gotten a little bit of panic once. It was in Norway. Visibility:2 feet. Had a little cold. Could not get the water out. I felt i didnt have controle over the situation and thats when fear/panic can start. Hope you're still a diver :-)
I just took my first dive class in a pool today not my open water yet but i had my mask fill up during the test and I had to swim up I hope that never happends when i deep thats the worst feeling iv ever had
Happened to some girls she was on advance course, she has gone up to surface in 5 sec which is one of the stupidest thing if you are below 20m. You should always stay calm, and learn to handle the mask taking down and up. I know you can breath very hard if your nose is filled up, but its no better on the surface. You can even cough into the reductor. By the way was that test diving? I dont see any scuba gear on the rescue diver.
great catch from safety, guy.......what I wanna know is, how come everyone around you didn't even notice? You clearly shook your head no to your buddy.....did she actually push you away, or just the camera angle.....I'd be looking for new buddies
That's a pretty vigilant instructor.

exactly for this you need a serious course and months of practise before diving. licence in 1 weekend is just so stupid and nosence

Constructive comment: Did they not teach you to lift the bottom up and blow using your nose? this clears the mask.

kudos to the safety diver. Nice response and,
to the new diver: practice scuba in a pool or shallows without a mask. Ive had my strap break once and a buckle break at + 50 ft. the practice helped
