Not that she's not a talented singer or pianist, it's just not an interesting cover. Tom's live version in Austin has you on the edge of your seat, making you laugh one minute and breaking your heart the next, and it has nothing to do with how pretty his voice sounds when he sings. He's just a master storyteller. This is why people should avoid covering the best of the best, it makes them seem a lot less talented than they really are in comparison.

Stop performing for the crowd and get into the role. The way you sing this piece is like you never drank whiskey or done dope. It's like singing Lush Life without ever getting yur heart broken. Don't worry so much about playing a good piano. Just sing this song as if you are a junky hooker.

You play really very well, but your voice is not there. It is a great song for a girl to sing and you could work out something without a fantastic voice, which would absolutely make sense with a song like this, but you have to think about it some more. Don't just try to be a great Jazz diva. Maybe you could try to use exactly the weak and fragile aspect of your voice instead of trying to be powerful. And listen to what she is saying, basically all is going wrong, express that.

Nice cover. Very dexterous piano playing. I wish there had been a microphone. I was surprised by the strength of the singer's voice around 3 minutes and wished some of the softer lyrics had been easier to hear. 5*

Really nice cover, of a beautiful song. I really don't get why people find the song funny though; it's one of the most tragic songs out there, when you listen to the words.

We can discoun the elements of tragedy because so much of the story (starting with the pregnancy) appears to have been made up in an attempt to solicit bail money from a man/former john.

Sure, the narrator and "Charlie" seem to have their problems, but taken as a whole are too minor or too vague to make the song sad.

Plus, I think it is full of benchmarks that make it funny in Tom's way (Grease in your hair; Little Anthony and the Imperials; I don't have a husband/He don't play the trombone)
