@dean44100 It was rare back then, but a lot of quarterbacks from the 20's through the 50's wore "non-quarterback" numbers. If memory serves me right, Bernie Kosar, the Miami quarterback, wore #20.
@flyersfan1430 Professional athletes' heights are always listed with their sneakers or their cleats on. Anyone who actually follows sports (you apparently don't) knows this, so with that being said, standing barefoot he was likely 5'9", Dummy. You missed the entire point anyways. That was the point and the Flyers fucking SUCK, but I'm sure you already knew this too, huh Dummy? GO BRUINS-- REPEAT
AVE MARIA, gratia plena, Dominus tecum. Benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Iesus. Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus, nunc, et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen.
cool. but not as cool as the 1980 holiday bowl known as the "miracle bowl". It was Smu 45 and BYU 25 in the 4th quarter. BYU scored an amazing catch touchdown...then onside kick and BYU recovered it. Then they scored on a deep deep pass. And then they stop SMU and SMU is punting and BYU BLOCKS THE PUNT. Then when there is 3 seconds left on the clock BYU does a Hail Mary and WINS THE GAME!
Onside kick recovery, blocked punt AND a hail mary. Thats like three miracles in one. watch it on youtube!
@walstib77 - Jealous much? Mr. Flutie was a heck of a football player. CFL and NFL. Keith Byars might have deserved the heisman, but giving Doug the moniker "flukie" is about disrespectful of someone who knew and knows how to play at EXTREMELY high levels.
I played for Leominster AYF. & we played doug flutie's team. we beat them 62-34 in the Massachusetts 8th grade State Championship. i got his autograph after the game:) he was so pissed!
This has to be the single most famous pass completion in the history of college ball. It boggles the mind to imagine how this one play defined his career and what might have been had that pass not been caught
@arkady714 I think Kordell Stewarts pass for Colorado At Michigan at the big house in 1994 was more spectacular. . .the ball traveled 74 yards in the air!!!! I do love seing this play however because little miami university's football team is nothing but a bunch of low down degenerate ghetto scuzzbucket drug using women raping crime committing shitbags! I love to see little miami lose. . what a shithole their football program is!
@SubliminalAfterbang I think women always give YOU a subliminalafterbang message.. . that being you did not fulfill them. . . your tiny little penis disapointed them and you came and went to limp before they even got warmed up!
If you didn't see the entire game, you wouldn't understand the context of this play.
Miami was king back then. It rained the entire game, and the score went back & forth, right until the end.
The quarterbacks were miked. On a 4th (& 1) & goal, the TV announcer said, "let's hear what Miami is going to call. With mike turned on, Bernie Kosar barked, "LET'S RUN IT RIGHT THE FU#K AT 'EM!". The announcer apologized to the audience.
I remember it well. I (with family in Miami so naturally a Miami fan) was visiting my step-mother's family (all Catholics and BC fans) in NJ. We were all sitting around watching the game, and I was a pretty happy camper. 6 seconds left and Miami was about to win, then all of a sudden - damn that Doug Flutie.
Not to take anything away from Flutie, he made a tremendous play here, but that announcer is a bit of a moron and overrates what happened. It isn't like a Hail Mary or a great pass hasn't ever been done at the end of a game before to win it. Does the name Roger Staubach ring a bell for this clueless announcer? I've seen more "miraculous" stuff happen in football before, like when running backs seem to somehow break 15 different sure tackles to run for a long touchdown.
You gotta understand, what made this play so ridiculous is that Flutie had been doing stuff like this his whole career. Usually a Hail Mary is just a heave, but we all *knew* Flutie was going to pull it off again. And he did! That guy was unbelievable in college, he was truly magical to watch.
@kantelier - What are you talking about? Flutie played in the NFL and CFL for years! He was voted best player in the CFL *six* times, started for at least three NFL teams that I can think of offhand (New England, Chicago, Buffalo) ,was a Pro Bowler in Buffalo, and finished his NFL career in New England kicking the first drop kick extra point in 50 years. He might actually be NFL Hall of Fame one day! Not bad for a guy 5'9 and 150.
@plkjnoj He also played for the L.A. Rams and the New Jersey Generals of the USFL. Everywhere he has been, he has fought like hell to keep his team in games and done a very good job of doing so. Doug Flutie rocks.
@plkjnoj Flutie was awful, he had an NFL career that included only 14,000 yards, 86 TDs, 68 INTs and a completion percentage under 55 percent. Flutie only made all 16 starts once in his career, when he was 39 years old.
I remember watching this whole game, I was 23 at the time. You talk about a shootout literally, no defense in this game at all. One of the greatest college games that I ever saw. Unfortunately, this play seems to be the only part of the game that still exists or it seems like it. Gerald Phelan still gets credit for the catch. He still gets interviewed about that catch, even now. Him and Flutie were roommates at the time, so they probably talked about doing something like this to win a game.
@WalshedHD do u play college football? bro, i mean kudos to him for catching it, but to take literally a 5 step drop that turns into a scramble and then a random hail marry at like 45-50 yards and for it to be right there, that is talent... i'd say lucky catch and good job, but amazing throw
@griffinathlete Or possibly vice versa eh? Maybe just a lucky throw - There is no talent behind a Hail Mary, hence the name. Its a luck shot. Thats why you only see at the end of a close game or towards half time to even up the score. What really should be laughed at is the terrible D-backs who failed to snatch it in the air, that thing was up for grabs.
i remember this game. i think there were 3 tds in last 2 mins of the game. bc scored then miami scored and then the hail mary by flutie .great game : O )
for the most part it was a hail mary to be perfectly honest how many hail marys are successful the secondary anticipated on the pick too soon leaving the wide out left in the red zone to me it was more of the wide out being patient and maintaining poise doug really didnt know where he was going with the ball he just put up a prayer good play though but i give it to the wide out all day
I didn't see this play, but I heard the ABC radio call with Keith Jackson... it was something like "Flutie takes the snap, drops back, rolls to his right, th'ows it as far as he kin... and it is CAUGHT FOR A TOUCHDOWN!" You couldn't hear anything else after that for the crowd screaming.
@buckeast1 How do you figure? You can look at the date this game was played and figure out like any 5 year old that the voting for heisman was already done before this game was played..... do your research before running your mouth with such outlandish comments.
@agentbong138 it's ok my little friend, back away from the cliff and take a deep breath. When you get home, have your mommy put the sharp objects up where you can't reach them and hide the rope. Any way you slice it, the wrong man was awarded the Heisman.
We're so quick to give all the credit to the quarterback, but if it weren't for the receiver leaping and catching the pass, they wouldn't have won the game. It takes more than one player to win a game.
My dad saw this on tv with my mom when they first met at college. They were late catching a movie so my mom was like "it's over! can we just go already!" Then my dad says "its not over till its over". The Doug Flutie play occured ten seconds later...
My uncle was Doug's best friend growing up, and they played football together growing up on the same team. When my poppop died in 2006, Doug's parents went to my poppop's funeral, because they became friends while my uncle and Doug grew up.
@FALUKYOURMOM Oh sorry. I wrote that because I thought everyone would care. Sorry. Sorry man. I apologize. I had no right to waste your time and tell you that stupid dumb life story.
Sorry again man. Sorry. I repent all of what I said. Why am I so fucking stupid? Why do I type shit nobody cares about? I'm fucking dumb man. I don't think before I do shit. I'm a fucking loser. I wish I was fucking dead.
Sorry again dude, sorry. Really, really, really sorry. I was out of line and I am forever sorry

Exciting, huh?

@FALUKYOURMOM Oh sorry. I wrote that because I thought everyone would care. Sorry. Sorry man. I apologize. I had no right to waste your time and tell you that stupid dumb life story.
Sorry again man. Sorry. I repent all of what I said. Why am I so fucking stupid? Why do I type shit nobody cares about? I'm fucking dumb man. I don't think before I do shit. I'm a fucking loser. I wish I was fucking dead.
Sorry again dude, sorry. Really, really, really sorry. I was out of line and I am forever sorry
