I think the Lego train is better, because it runs on batteries and it's safer than the O-scale Lionel, since it's electrical and shocking if you touch the track.
@Rlotpir1972 Thanks for your comment. Actually, O gauge trains are quite safe to operate. There is no danger of shock from the track. They run at a maximum of 18 to 20 volts AC, which is not harmful. I've never been shocked by any O gauge track and I've been running trains for over 30 years.
i'm not familliar with Lionel but my vote goes to: Lionel, because of the sound, lights and steam engine details (so mostly only because of details xD)
@evan9181 It's a tough choice, I know. Actually, the two models appeal to different folks, I think. Lego fans and Lionel fans may not come from the same planet! LOL.
@ModellbahnDaniel My German is not that good, but isn't Marklin an HO model? Lionel is O gauge. I don't have any HO trains or track. Thanks for watching though.
@bluecomet390 Yeah, i know. Plus, Lionel is better quality, and you are basically comparing it to a fake Lionel. GO LIONEL!!! I have my own little layout, but it is under construction for the holidays. :)
The reason the lego one appears to be moving faster, is simply that it's track is smaller. The lionel track goes around the outside of the lego one, giving it a much larger track to run.
@LordNaxirus Good observation. A number of comments have pointed this out. In my defense, I never actually intended it to be a race - just a comparison of the features of the two sets. I gave Lego the "inside track" because the radius of curvature of the track is smaller. Thanks for watching.
@2001jamesmThanks for the question. The Lionel runs on 3-rail O gauge track. The power is supplied through the centre rail. It runs at up to 18 volts AC (alternating current). The Lego runs on specialized Lego track. It is 2-rail and runs on 9 volts DC (direct current).
@revenger129 Yes, but who said they are competing on speed? I had general appearance, realism, and play value more in miond when I posed the question.
@2010californa .... unless you drop them on the floor, that is. Legos do have a habit of turning themselves into a pile of bricks. Lionels on the other hand just bend a little.
@bluecomet390 well lionell can break but legos last if you drop legos on a flloor = mess but if you have a table with supports on the side you wont have a mess
@TomixNscale89 Could be, but I replaced the bell/whistle combination to get a more English sound to the whistle. The whistle operates on the "whistle"button and the bell on the "bell"button of the transformer. They operate independently of one another. Thanks for watching.
@frog1599 Yeah. Lego has made some incredible models like the Emerald Night, so I don't doubt they could put out a terrific Hogwarts if they wanted to.
@bluecomet390 Agreed. The Emerald Night is amazingly detailed. I wouldn't see why Lego wouldn't make a nice detailed Hogwarts Express too. I'd buy it. They could make a lot of money off of products like those too.
Lego made two versions of the Hogwarts Express. The 4708 was unpowered and came with one carriage but no tender. The 10132 was powered (9 volt) and came with a tender and one carriage. I made up the other two carriages from partial 4708 sets which I acquired on eBay. Thanks for watching.
@fldivenaked The whistle was installed by a friend of mine who is much more handy with these things than I am. It is a commercial product that uses an American locomotive whistle sound (I can''t remember which) . It is the closest we could come to a British train whistle. Can't remember if a bell is included. Sorry, but the installation was done over a year ago, and the set spends most of its time in the box.
You're right. More play value with the lego - building it and playing with the minifigs. The Lionel needs a Railsounds tender for more realism. But heck, any train is better than no train at all.
