I went to the website and didn't see any prices. I assume it's one of those "If you have to ask the price, you can't afford it" sort of things. I'd guess that bench sells for at least $1400 US, but that's just a guess.
Fantastic video! The filmmaking is almost as inspired as the woodworking (almost). If you could produce a dozen of these shorts I guarantee you could land a show on HBO.
I love the video angles and the quick shots. I agree with kw757. I was dog tired last night when I clicked on this clip, but I had to watch it through. Inspiring and just plain fantastic!!
Wow! For once I sat through 15 minutes of a video and have no regrets! Well done! Don't think I'd want a steam oven in my shop, though -- I have a hard enough time trying to keep rust off the tools.
Wow, beautiful piece of design. I love original work. I would definitely buy that for my place (I've been looking for a smallish coffee table), but sadly I live in Australia and I don't think wood can go through customs. Truly remarkable craftsmanship and creativity!
Absolutely sensational Video - both the woodworking - nay - craftsmanship and the quality of Video. This is the sort of thing YouTube is supposed to be - better than TV...Quality video, No Ads and Free!!
Very well done video, and the music made it even better.I puts me in mind of boatbuilding with that steamer. That woodmizer is quite a peice of equipment and you have it mastered.wonderful work .Thanks for sharing
This is amazing! All out of one piece?! My jaw dropped when he was bending the legs down, and then when he took it off and it has that curved half circle between them. I kept wondering why he was cutting those lines.
Very nice video. I was strangely awed at the process, despite the fact I had no idea what he was doing throughout most of it. I can see why Jesus chose this occupation. :)
Gotta love a wood-working badass with a little wooden dolphin sitting on his cutting board! ^_^
Also, loved the ultra-long of the workshop when he was turning on the lights. Those kinds of shots and thoughtful bits and pieces are what make the video great. It's funny, really, because what makes your dad's table so great is that same thoughtfulness and attention to detail.
May I ask how much a bench would cost? Or do you have an online shop ? In the video I saw a few other pieces I thought were really cool. Probably out of my price range right now but starting a new job soon :) Very well done video too. Makes me wanna have a shop too....
Ge-ni-ous! Especially how all the molds are used so extensively. I wonder how long it took to get to this stage, with regards to the product itself, but also fine tuning the molds.
Its beautiful. :D ...But there was a log of wood scraps that I hope he used from that log. Oh and BTW, Adam Savage from Mythbusters sent me here from a link on his Twitter. Just sayin'.
Bravo! My son and I just watched with jaws dropped as Mr. Jarvi coerced that Wood Miser to do things even IT didn't know it could do. Clever fixtures and quite a dance routine worked-out to get everything in it's place on the "Rack". And I thought I had to work fast with Shaker oval boxes! That settles it, I'm watching it again!
As someone who grew up with a grandfather with a nice little woodworking shop, this is something that just calls to me. Beautiful work and a great film.
I bet you couldn't make a bench if someone made a 15:45 instructional video showing you how it's done. Admit it, you're just worked up because there's a Claussen pickle jar in that video. : )
I am so impressed. I look at this Man at work and just think of how wonderful it is to see a Master at work. You guys need to have a show honestly. Please post more, even some teaching vids.
Wasn't for the glue, was for the moisture when he steamed it for a day. He waits until ALL the wood reaches equilibrium with the environment. This also sets the bent wood back to original moisture. It's very tricky (know this from experience). He probably experimented a lot to get the moisture levels, etc. just right. Also why he used white oak, it steams and bends very well. I have never done somethign as creative and just plain WOW as this, but have steamed and bent white oak.
at first when I saw some guy saying "this is awesome, I really like watching somebody make a bench" or something like that I was like "dude, it's just some wood, stop shitting your pants". But then I watched this video and I must say this is great. I like to watch how things are made and your dad is really a skilled mofo :)
also the editing and the whole video is really enjoyable to watch.
That is amazing!!! I would KILL to have one of his originals in my home! What a unique and supremely skilled tradesman!
Also, The video was quite impressive. I would like to see a breakdown of all the materials, tools used, time spent (total was like 38 days?), Im really floored by this!

Agreed: I tried to get lost in the genius of your dad making that bench. As a woodworker, myself (hack, really), I was ... quite simply ... moved.
But I was "distracted" -- in the BEST possible way -- by the work YOU did in the production of this piece.
I love my family, but ... if you guys are looking to adopt a full-grown male ... I'm sure it would eventually be a win-win situation ;-)
Thanks for such an entertaining vid, and ... for showcasing a truly talented man !
