ELectric vehicles still use petroleum! I'd never purchase one, too limiting. A silly idea indeed. Oh yeah, the US Congress thinks it's great but they live in another universe!
k7swan: the average commute in the United States is 32 miles (roughly 50 klicks) which means that this car can take those people to work and back home without using any petrol. Electric drive is 4-5 times more efficient than using petrol, much cleaner, and the electricity can be "home grown" i.e. no more dependence on foreign oil (which is declining BTW.) The onboard generator means it's just like a regular petrol-powered vehicle if you need more range than the battery can provide.
I am so ready for this again!!! EV1 was on the map already....and the government smashed it literally...here we go again...hype...and like he just said its something for a decade or maybe more? Like the Prius.,.our government is hammering Toyota with its great car especially the hybrid. Now all of a sudden the american manufactures have ads, hype about their new GM hybrids starting at a high price unreachable to the mid class american people. I hate this game they play, and I wont be a player!
This car only gets like 64km on one charge. I drive a dodge neon right now and I can get more than that on a quarter tank. I like the idea, but I think they need to figure out a way to get more drive time out of one charge. Also... Charge time is a key thing as well.... If it takes a long time to charge the battery every time. 8 hours is WAY too long to wait for a charge. If you drove anywhere 64km away in it you would be stuck there for at least 8 hours waiting for a full charge again.

Why does GM want to sell it as an EV instead of a plug-in hybrid? EVs are a completely different class of vehicle.

With my commutes I can drive in electric mode almost full time (without doing any extra traveling around).
