I think it's pretty ironic that Ligeti wrote all of the Requiem pieces (Introit; Kyrie; and this one, Dies Irae) completely based on the Roman Catholic Mass of the Dead to fulfill a commission celebrating the 10th anniversary of a contemporary music series.

Funny not only because he was being himself and saying "fuck you" to the man, as is usual Ligeti, but also because the parts are 1-rising of the dead, 2-asking god forgiveness, and 3-being condemned to hell for all eternity.
