I was fucking close to that thing! I was on vacation, and me and my dad were on a beach, and i went diving for a few minutes, and suddenly i saw a huge ass stingray!
The barb of a ray is a purely defensive feature. They never attack things. In other words, the only way that you would get barbed is if you were severely messing with it! I would feel much safer swimming next to a sting ray than getting into a car.
Damn, BBC blocks my ability to watch so many good things that they have. Our science and nature channels are slipping and have tons of filler programming. I want to see some BBC nature programming, but my country is blocked from a lot of it, so I have to resort to English proxies to watch it. Why is that?
Stingrays are fishes with wings. They fly underwater.
LMAO
Heres the real definition:
noun
any of the rays, esp. of the family Dasyatidae, having a long, flexible tail armed near the base with a strong, serrated bony spine with which they can inflict painful wounds.
You can get better video yourself on an spare afternoon off the coast of the big island of Hawaii. Tourists there do it every day. I had mantas within inches of me but didn't take any video.
Discovery Cove is an awesome place to visit. I had a great time there (as everyone that goes does).
I live in South Florida and sting rays are very common on the coast. I have seen many large Sothern sting rays (up to 6.5 ft across). But the 8+ft Small-eyed stingray in this video is huge!
As for the Manta ray, they are the true giants and can grow to more than 7.6 metres (25 ft) across.
