Civil disobedience as practiced in modern america is useless. It consists of college students and psuedoanarchists throwing pop bottles at police, laying down in the streets until the police come, beat them and cart them off to jail. There is only one way to achieve anything through civil disobedience and that is to cause violence and loss which undermines the people's belief in the current system. Telling some fat man on the streets about life in prison does nothing unless that man is starving.
when you talk about how people are enslaved by the system, you should also consider how the family courts enslave men upon the dissolution of marriage.
I think many statists hold onto their beliefs because to do otherwise would force them to apologize for their complicity in the system - there is an aspect of guilt involved, as well. "Yes, I know the system is immoral, but I play along anyway" would sound idiotic coming out of someone's mouth, of course. Also, the cart b4 the horse analogy as applied to property taxes and other large fees that people are forced to pay as they go through life almost act as a stamp of approval.
If the media wasn't owned by lobbyists, maybe civil disobedience would have more of an effect, but for every human rights violation story (no matter how powerful) there are 5 stories about Tiger Woods and Michael Jackson.
This is where those working w/i the system have the advantage. They have tangible ways of achieving their ends, and have an easier time organizing folks. Influencing elections, protests, running for office, supporting legislation, etc.
As far as civil disobedience not working in history, what alternative would've been better? Doing exactly what the govt says? How would that've been more effective? Would the folks resisting the USGovt in Iraq/Afghanistan be better off NOT resisting?
I love Stef's commentary and am nearly 100% in agreement w/his postulations and philosophy. You just can't argue w/his logic and history.
That said, I've yet to hear how the stateless society would come about. How can it happen w/o disobedience to those who claim a right of ownership over other people? Educating folks is fine, but that won't accomplish getting from "here" to "there".
Hi Stef - Wes is right about solomon asche thing - group think etc.
Lauren - Clamming up when arrested means they have to give "you" info to try to get you to talk. It can be entertaining until they start pulling fingernails out.
Maybe 1/2 way strategy is to just question everything - e.g. get taxman to explain/justify (at every opportunity) why they want your money.
You can maybe make them think about what they're doing - or you could just annoy them I suppose.
@ronpaulspanish. Wow these rebels are useless. This Lauren girl is stupid. Utterly stupid. Her Civil Disobedience consists of not getting a driver's license? Are you serious? This is why American Civil Disobedience is laughed at internationally. They are bombing cities in Greece, Germany, Spain and most other places including the UK. Driving without a licence does nothing but harm the financial fragility of who she eventually involves in a wreck. Civil disobedience is not lack of responsibility

Who is that second fucktard running his mouth about shit he doesn't understand. Get someone who's been tortured in an American prison and who has actually thrown a brick or two at a moving cop car and actually understands what civil disobediance is about. There is not state, thats a fact, its a fiction. There are just thugs with radios. And then there are good people who just want to be left alone.

I think this is where anarchism loses people.

You've got to explore agorism. It's the first idea that's given me hope for a while.
There's a great article about 'outside the system' action if you google "Yes, Outside the System Activism is Part of a Coherent Strategy for Liberty"
