Strap a vw beetle engine between your legs, does that sound smart?
a liter bike as your first bike is a bad choice in my opinion. If you want it as your first bike, go ahead. I would suggest you put off until your second or third season though, and buy something like a 400 or 500, standard or sport either way. That would allow you to learn how to ride and become accustomed to the bike. Even then, a 500 could easily last 3 or 4 seasons before you got bored of it
Why do German like this kind of asymmetrical design much? I mean, I like this bike, but I just wonder why...K1300R, F800R and all the BMW enduro models have asymmetrical design in their face.
@suzukiaddress125 I don't know why but I hate it, I don't like that design at all and have you seen

This is actually the first time in design history that european designers copied a asian design. Most of the time its the other way around. The influence of the Japanese superbike design is obvious. German precision with a good design...well lets just say :"Japan, watch out"!
Those headlights are the "trademark" of BMW motorbikes to differentiate them from the dominating japanese superbikes. When you drive along with your car and see that bike in your mirror then you won't think "Ouh. An other japanese sportbike." You'll immediately see: "Ouh it's a BMW!" And then you'll see is from behind.^^
Ugly headlights. It's like BMW took the design idea from Bimota and Kawasaki and decided to fuse them together. Idiots. Now the bike looks like a retarded android with a birth defect.
wats wit all the hate???? i think its a gr8 bike...i luv the asymmetrical headlight its good to see someone is thinking outside the box..... good on ya bmw..... :)
For everyone that complains about this bike's looks, remember that it does come in different colors. Also, the they did the asymmetrical headlight arrangement to differentiate it from all the others.

At the 2010 Valencia Masterbike challenge, the Yamaha R1 placed DEAD LAST out of nine bikes. The BMW S1000RR got first - as in #1, as in eight places ahead of the R1.
It was the Yamaha that was choking on everyone else's dust, including especially the BMWs. Watch the video and weep:

First, the asymmetrical aesthetic with respect to the cowling design is super high-class. Secondly, the suggestion that something like the inertial impact of the design of a component like the headlights would be significant or even noticeable, or represents an executive decision favoring styling over performance-is really silly. Raptorman must be American, because they'll always initially air on the side of anti-intellectualism or pro-utilitarianism, no matter the cost or how stupid.
umm wtf, Why wouldn't they makes the lights symetrical? You'd think that with a high performance bike, the balance point would preferably be dead centre, not slightly off due to something stupid as different headlights
i ride suzuki man, but you gotta realize anything that bmw does is bomb. MCN said it was the best literbike, surely not for the price, but its tight man
no bikes are symmetrical. chain is off to the side, exhaust is off to the side, etc. they all weigh more than the difference between the two headlights.
Little did you know I was bored and decided to see what people would say... and the exhaust is offset the the weight of the chain and sprockets mostly... I do know something about bikes cause I've owned dirtbikes since I was 10 and now have a GSXR. BMW is amazing and I like this bike except for the goofy lookin front and the huge peice on the front left corner.
OK Maybe i'm wrong in judging before my European dealer gets one in , so i will retract my previous statement and jut not look at the video of it., and just wait to see it in person . Who knows it might actually make me puke right there on the dealerships floor ,lol . or not . I like BMW so it might make me buy one right on the spot. Oh yeah 190bhp is scary fast !
That thing makes me want to puke ! It's irreparably ugly ! And here i was all excited when i saw the left side. I dare anyone try to pick up a girl riding this ! God it's so gross! What made the designers think this is what the consumer wants ! Every time i look at this makes me unconstitutionally violent ! I guess ill have to get a different liter bike.
I just saw it yesterday, and have to say it's better looking when you are standing beside it. The HP2 sport makes it look terrible, but that bike is beautiful, IMHO.
it looks like every other motorcycle....the headlights are such a small and insignificant amount of area to be concerned about. It looks good, quit bitching everyone, theres more important things than looks, like personality
They couldn't admit they can't design fairings... so they tried to look strange silly so they would get away with it. The bike may be good... but the design is dumb.
Aren't any decent after market fairings out on sale by now?
hahaha yes! thats what Ive been saying. The design is too weird for me tho. headlights and taillights and all the crazy out of control design features. not cool
The front of this bike looks like the product of some German guy who after just injecting himself with steroids, thought he was being original. I can't wait to see some MCN tests of this bike though! Btw, this bike also looks like it lacks any carbon fibre and looks too plastic for the £12,500 price tag of the Sport version!
BMW have done a good job but I would get any of the Ducati superbike range any day over this bike (even the 848), and I hear that the accessories on this bike are going to be very limited. The S1000RR sports version is obviously going to be a better buy if one can afford it but a nearly new Ducati 1198S with traction control is arguably much better and you can never beat Ducati's looks or performance.
That's the bullshit answer! First of all if you are saying get the best ducati and see what it can do, I would choose either the 1098R (now 1198R) or the desmosedici which would both leave the BMW in the distance. It is not even up for debate that the 1098R is in a different league altogether. And also remember that everything is relative so the BMW would not levave you behind if someone with limited experience is riding it, as opposed to someone even on a ducati 848 who is at a higher level.
Well, It probably comes down to the driver, but the BMW has a better HP to weight ratio and a lower center of gravity. I suppose if the Ducati driver doesn't have a fat head (rare) and the Ducati isn't in need of maintenance (rarer) then he might be able to at least keep up but he spent 60% more for that pleasure alone. $13,800 VS $22,000 for the 1198s version! add another $10,000 for the "R" version. Get a grip rich boy (or better "fantasy" boy)
you got your facts wrong, because the ducati 1098R has a better HP to weight ratio and the bike has a dry weight that is nearly 20 kg less than the BMW. Ducati mainteance issues were a thing of the past and all the new bikes are very reliable if taken to the garage for their service every 3500 miles. American prices seem expensive too because you can find a new 1198S for the same price as the BMW and even a nearly new ducati 1098R for around 16000 pounds.
Like I mentioned "60% more for that pleasure alone. $13,800 VS $22,000 for the 1198s version!" That's the S version.
Yes the R is lighter but still has less HP than the S1000.
If you have $40,000 to spend you should get an R. I suspect next sunny day you will still be here arguing the point while I will be driving my BMW in the mountains outside of Seattle.
Forget the 1098R, the 1198S is more than good enough and is vey similar to the R. The BMW S1000RR only has 10 bhp more but it weighs 20 kg more and looks are relatively important and nobody can argue that it is better looking than the ducati. If I were you, test ride the 1198S in the next few weeks and then when the BMW comes out test ride that and write back saying how both were. I guarantee you will like the Ducati more! But don't make a decision based on what you see or read. Test ride them!
I have been to Seattle twice, really nice place! I love the States!. The BMW is a great bike, it is probably a better choice for you if you are near the mountains and traction control is important if there is a lot of rain, as the rain setting really does help by limiting the power and revs and helps you out with your throttle control. Most of my comments have been biased because I have always loved Ducati, have had two of them and I am Italian. But the BMW is a great bike too, and very fast!
A bike is one of the most personal things to a rider and even if you already have a BMW bike and are keen on getting their new superbike, this is still not reason enough to do so. You should test ride all the competition in the litre bike class so that you have no regrets ober which bike you like the most and which bike best suits you. It is not as simple as just saying that you will get the BMW for certain. If you are spending that amount of money, give or take 1000-1500 dollars is not an issue
If you want to compare the BMW S1000RR with the Ducati 1198S, because it is already clear that the 1098R is in a different league altogether... you have to realise that it must be in comparison with the S version of the BMW, which with the traction control and ABS and carbon extras amongst other things can actually be more expensive than the ducati 1198S (by around 700-1000 pounds.) The BMW will never beat the Ducati for looks... never! They haven't even won as many championships as Ducati!
Compared to its European superbike kin, however, the BMW S1000RR is a relative bargain. Even adding the $1480 ABS and traction control option the BMW still retails for less than the Ducati, and well below the KTM and MV Agusta. • BMW S1000RR -$13800 • Aprilia RSV1000R - $13,999 • Ducati 1198S - $16,495 • Ducati 848 - $13,995 • KTM RC8 - $19,499 • MV Agusta F4 RR 312 - $24,995 • 2010 Ducati 1198R Corse - $40,000 -
I think you are right in some ways about the 1098Rbeing too expensive because as we know, it's not just buying the bike itself that costs money but also adding extras, maintenance costs and of course insurance! However there is some confusion on your part over the price differences between those in Europe and in the States. Also taking into account bargain second hand bikes, it is possible to find an 1198S with low miles for the same price as the BMW or even less. What is the BMW price in the US
I know it's so tough and agressive looking and appears BMW has really stepped up their game, but the front fairing and headlight is something that will require some getting used to. You either like it or you don't...
The headlights look great. Cyborg. Very distinctive.

umm wtf, Why wouldn't they makes the lights symetrical? You'd think that with a high performance bike, the balance point would preferably be dead centre, not slightly off due to something stupid as different headlights
13raptorman22 2 years ago
@13raptorman22 i disagree.
i ride suzuki man, but you gotta realize anything that bmw does is bomb. MCN said it was the best literbike, surely not for the price, but its tight man
mastertony2k4 2 years ago
no bikes are symmetrical. chain is off to the side, exhaust is off to the side, etc. they all weigh more than the difference between the two headlights.
throAU 2 years ago
@13raptorman22 You're an idiot lol. You obviously dont own or know anything about bikes.
Schutzstaffel23 2 years ago
@13raptorman22 If that's the case, then why do so many superbikes only have 1 exhaust?
MDCVFIF 2 years ago
Little did you know I was bored and decided to see what people would say... and the exhaust is offset the the weight of the chain and sprockets mostly... I do know something about bikes cause I've owned dirtbikes since I was 10 and now have a GSXR. BMW is amazing and I like this bike except for the goofy lookin front and the huge peice on the front left corner.

@13raptorman22 You must be REALLY bored.

I guess ill have to get a different liter bike.
hankmatt1 2 years ago
I just saw it yesterday, and have to say it's better looking when you are standing beside it. The HP2 sport makes it look terrible, but that bike is beautiful, IMHO.
I do like the fit and finish on all BMWs.
schmazly2 2 years ago 2
it looks like every other motorcycle....the headlights are such a small and insignificant amount of area to be concerned about. It looks good, quit bitching everyone, theres more important things than looks, like personality

Cool bike. the left front looks a little like the Yamaha R6. I think I would prefer the Yamaha R1 but its a nice bike°!

@HighCardWins
They couldn't admit they can't design fairings... so they tried to look strange silly so they would get away with it. The bike may be good... but the design is dumb.
Aren't any decent after market fairings out on sale by now?
zaelu 1 year ago
@HighCardWins that's BMW, innovative ;)
ObbiShade 1 year ago
@ObbiShade No doubt it's cutting edge tech but I think they did that to keep people saying that it looks like a Yamaha R1.

@HighCardWins I guess your right, but, i like the headlights :)

They germans are good engineers. look at their KTM RC8R and all of the nice cars that they make.
ducatisti1 2 years ago
The front of this bike looks like the product of some German guy who after just injecting himself with steroids, thought he was being original. I can't wait to see some MCN tests of this bike though! Btw, this bike also looks like it lacks any carbon fibre and looks too plastic for the £12,500 price tag of the Sport version!
gianlucavi 2 years ago
bmw will be offering full carbon fibre kit for it at extra cost.....
BUZZ50RIDER 2 years ago
BMW have done a good job but I would get any of the Ducati superbike range any day over this bike (even the 848), and I hear that the accessories on this bike are going to be very limited. The S1000RR sports version is obviously going to be a better buy if one can afford it but a nearly new Ducati 1198S with traction control is arguably much better and you can never beat Ducati's looks or performance.
gianlucavi 2 years ago
@gianlucavi That's fine - get the best ducati you can find - you'll still be looking at the wacky tail light of this BMW as it leaves you behind.
rcpmac 2 years ago
That's the bullshit answer! First of all if you are saying get the best ducati and see what it can do, I would choose either the 1098R (now 1198R) or the desmosedici which would both leave the BMW in the distance. It is not even up for debate that the 1098R is in a different league altogether. And also remember that everything is relative so the BMW would not levave you behind if someone with limited experience is riding it, as opposed to someone even on a ducati 848 who is at a higher level.
gianlucavi 2 years ago
Well, It probably comes down to the driver, but the BMW has a better HP to weight ratio and a lower center of gravity. I suppose if the Ducati driver doesn't have a fat head (rare) and the Ducati isn't in need of maintenance (rarer) then he might be able to at least keep up but he spent 60% more for that pleasure alone. $13,800 VS $22,000 for the 1198s version! add another $10,000 for the "R" version. Get a grip rich boy (or better "fantasy" boy)
rcpmac 2 years ago
BMW will always be sucking on Ducati's cock!
gianlucavi 2 years ago
@gianlucavi That's your best reply? You ARE a fantasy boy.
rcpmac 2 years ago
you got your facts wrong, because the ducati 1098R has a better HP to weight ratio and the bike has a dry weight that is nearly 20 kg less than the BMW. Ducati mainteance issues were a thing of the past and all the new bikes are very reliable if taken to the garage for their service every 3500 miles. American prices seem expensive too because you can find a new 1198S for the same price as the BMW and even a nearly new ducati 1098R for around 16000 pounds.
gianlucavi 2 years ago
@gianlucavi
Like I mentioned "60% more for that pleasure alone. $13,800 VS $22,000 for the 1198s version!" That's the S version.
Yes the R is lighter but still has less HP than the S1000.
If you have $40,000 to spend you should get an R. I suspect next sunny day you will still be here arguing the point while I will be driving my BMW in the mountains outside of Seattle.
rcpmac 2 years ago
Forget the 1098R, the 1198S is more than good enough and is vey similar to the R. The BMW S1000RR only has 10 bhp more but it weighs 20 kg more and looks are relatively important and nobody can argue that it is better looking than the ducati. If I were you, test ride the 1198S in the next few weeks and then when the BMW comes out test ride that and write back saying how both were. I guarantee you will like the Ducati more! But don't make a decision based on what you see or read. Test ride them!
gianlucavi 2 years ago
@gianlucavi The 1098 is rated at 170hp and the BMW is 193hp.
Honestly there is more to being fastest than having more HP or HP to weight. We will have to see. The BMW is $13800 in the US - approx 9000 euros.
rcpmac 2 years ago
I have been to Seattle twice, really nice place! I love the States!. The BMW is a great bike, it is probably a better choice for you if you are near the mountains and traction control is important if there is a lot of rain, as the rain setting really does help by limiting the power and revs and helps you out with your throttle control. Most of my comments have been biased because I have always loved Ducati, have had two of them and I am Italian. But the BMW is a great bike too, and very fast!
gianlucavi 2 years ago
A bike is one of the most personal things to a rider and even if you already have a BMW bike and are keen on getting their new superbike, this is still not reason enough to do so. You should test ride all the competition in the litre bike class so that you have no regrets ober which bike you like the most and which bike best suits you. It is not as simple as just saying that you will get the BMW for certain. If you are spending that amount of money, give or take 1000-1500 dollars is not an issue
gianlucavi 2 years ago
@gianlucavi
Agreed !0% becomes insignificant but at 50% i start considering the number of rainy days seattle has and rethinking my investment.
rcpmac 2 years ago
If you want to compare the BMW S1000RR with the Ducati 1198S, because it is already clear that the 1098R is in a different league altogether... you have to realise that it must be in comparison with the S version of the BMW, which with the traction control and ABS and carbon extras amongst other things can actually be more expensive than the ducati 1198S (by around 700-1000 pounds.) The BMW will never beat the Ducati for looks... never! They haven't even won as many championships as Ducati!
gianlucavi 2 years ago
Compared to its European superbike kin, however, the BMW S1000RR is a relative bargain. Even adding the $1480 ABS and traction control option the BMW still retails for less than the Ducati, and well below the KTM and MV Agusta. • BMW S1000RR -$13800 • Aprilia RSV1000R - $13,999 • Ducati 1198S - $16,495 • Ducati 848 - $13,995 • KTM RC8 - $19,499 • MV Agusta F4 RR 312 - $24,995 • 2010 Ducati 1198R Corse - $40,000 -
But now u want to talk looks
rcpmac 2 years ago
I think you are right in some ways about the 1098Rbeing too expensive because as we know, it's not just buying the bike itself that costs money but also adding extras, maintenance costs and of course insurance! However there is some confusion on your part over the price differences between those in Europe and in the States. Also taking into account bargain second hand bikes, it is possible to find an 1198S with low miles for the same price as the BMW or even less. What is the BMW price in the US
