i knew we were special this year. one day during practice i was marching with a sweater or sweat shirt on during parade season practice and once we made the round by the stomp(everybody knows where that is on the yard) I fell out of rank to take off my sweater, once the band completely turned from the fence coming back towards the school I waited to get back on the line. watching the band and not being a part of it really gave me an idea of how GREAT we were. I was floored, jawdropped like damn!
What a year!!!! This is what happens when you mix DESIRE, ABILITY, a sense of PRIDE and throw in an OPPORTUNITY. One of the best things that can happen to anyone is to be a part of this band. Thank you Mr Hampton, Ray Johnson, all Purple Knights, special thanks to Leroy Crawford, Earnest Miles, Earl Short, C. Gales, Tommy Curtain, Virgil Tiller, Bass Shoes, Kiwi Polish Inc., Jupiter Trumpets, Bach and Shilke Mouthpieces, and Arban Method books.
It was my year 1988 that we coined the phrase "No Laughing, No Talking, No Nothing". Mr. Hampton we love you, and your doctrine of perfection is still alive in me today. I would give anything to march in one more Zulu parade, one more MLK Parade when it use to start in the 9th ward on Caffin Ave, and one more Purple vs. 35 field show. God bless the New Orleans High School Marching Bands, and God bless St Aug Marching 100. PURPLE T -- Drum 504-236-8447
This was a great band! You just had to be there. We were great because we looked to the legendary St. Augustine bands of the 70's and 80's. We played; "In the Stone", "Back Stabbers", "Knights by nights" because it was the standard set by the great St. Aug Bands before us. We focused on our tradition despite the other highschool and college bands, who were badly hacking Southern University's music.
That's right. While I was in school, we brought back "In the Stone." During the glory days of the football tradition in the 70s, this song was the theme song. When we brought back in the 80s, it fired us up. The football team won two district championships during my stay, 82-86. It is hard to describe the pride I have watching my band, my school, and my Alma Mater!
I didn't even go to St. Aug (from Marrero) and even I take pride in how the band always repped the N.O. area. Praying that you get the band back to what it was and that the city recovers to the fullest.
Shot out to Chad Gales drum major co 94. May the future Marching 100 bands look to the traditions and hold on to those things most dear and also pass the torch on.
this was my last mardi gras parade in a st aug inifom.....RIP Hamp

I am humbled to say that Mr. Hampton blessed me with a year to lead this band as a Drum Major in 1999 - 2000!

I'm thankful for video technology because this is proof of what the St. Augustine Marching 100 was really like. What you see today is not even close.

That is outstanding for a high school man. Some colleges don't put that much time and energy into their music.

I love it! It was a great year! I played Tenor Drum along with Mike Malone, Lance and Brandon. I would love to go back in time and do it over again!
