@200catss Depends on how many pigs you have, and how much room there is! Less room means less space for wastes to go... My cage needs cleaning around once a week, though I put more bedding in sometimes and do it in two weeks.
Pet supply stores carry guinea pig food and bedding. The cage stuff can be bought at home hardware stores... read the other comments, you may find them helpful.
Fiddlesticks. They're just sticks held together by a couple of wires inside them; very bendy, very useful. Wood. Great for making places to pigs to hide, too!
Sorry, above I said they were Critter Sticks; now I'm not sure which. You can find them in pet supply stores though, whatever they're calling them. :)
That's weird. Before, I would use reclcyed bedding called crittercare and it was junk because, it got all stuck or unuseable if they peed on it, and it would keep the smell. :( So I switched to pine shavings, which is still good because it is klin dried.☺
No, they do not differentiate between surfaces to pee on in their cage. The only time I've seen them preferentially use a space is when they are out of their cage, they will pee on paper rather than the carpet of my apartment.
I use a brand of kitty litter pellets for my guinea pig's bed. it's really good because there's not smell whatsoever, it makes it very easy to clean and it's safe for my guinea pig.
what kind of material did you use for the floor? you rolled it up and I have been looking for a substitute for wood shavings which create harmfull dust that the guinea pigs might not like.
I used two sets of Fiddle Sticks. They're just a bunch of sticks with a couple of wires going through them, so you can bend and mould them however you like. And they're safe to chew. Great stuff!
I do cover them with towels though, otherwise my pig's claws get stuck. Keep an eye out for that!
Try recycled paper pellets or recycled wood pellets... they tend to last for weeks at a time without stinking. I've learned that aspen is not to pleasent when dirtyaand can tent to smell like tabacco smoke when used
That is true! I tried them, but I found them to be way too heavy to be practical (I rely on the bus to transport it, and 50lbs is just too much! Though, the cost is very cheap...) I'll stick to the recycled paper clumps (Care Fresh). Thanks for commenting!
I wouldn't use Lysol wipes. The smell is really strong and causes respiratory irritation. Use a 50/50 blend of vinegar and water to clean away bacteria and remove odor.
That's awesome! I made a C&C cage for my rabbit and cleanup is a breeze since the Coroplast just wipes clean. My rabbit is litter box trained, so that cuts cleaning tremendously! If I ever get another guinea pig, which I hope to, I'm using your idea with the newspaper :)
Um, at first it did, but the stuff was bound to get sullied eventually... The tray has stayed pretty white though! It's well worth it to be able to roll all the bedding up for cleaning, such a time saver.
No worries! They are "Critter Sticks", the large size (bridge)... Essentially they are a bunch or sticks with a couple of wires inside binding them together. They're bendable, chewable, and really great to make ramps and hiding places out of.
I've been looking for like 7 days, where did you buy the critter stick bridge? thanks oh and the message i post a few days ago isn't coming up on my computer but if you see it I'm sorry, Thanks.
I love cleaning the fleece so much better. I hate when we go on vacation and so I hire a friend to come over and feed my pigs and I have to put in paper bedding so that my friend wouldn't have to sweep poop.
I went to a RONA centre... anywhere that has sheet plywood and building supplies would have it. I phoned around a lot... if there's no place like that near you, phone sign-making companies, as they use coroplast for their signs (though the one I phoned was WAY more expensive than RONA). :)
Also, you know those big COKE and Pepsi signs you see outside gas stations? they are made from the same thing, ask around, someone will have old signs they are just throwing away.
Cool cage! I use as layer of mattress padding sewn to a layer of fleece as bedding; pull it up, shake it out, sweep up the debris, lay down a new one. Viola!
i cant stand the smell of their cage...................it needs to be cleaned everyday..

The pan kind of thing is "coroplast", kinda like lino, then newspaper then a recycled composite bedding. Easy, odour effective and cheap!

Wher could i get a C&C Cubes and Coroplast cage for cheap?

They sell em on cavycages site. They still cost some money but waayyy cheaper than if you managed to find a store cage that price.
