  • have a look at the videos on rffada - they are short and succinct

  • sorry i lost you after 1:47

  • WHY DID THEY ,MAKE SOMETHING ABOUT ADHD SO LONG? .I KEEP HAVING TO PAUSE OR REWIND...LOL

  • hey i dont no if i have something like adhd or not im wondering beause im being moniterd by Suport for leraning beahviour and i get in a lot of trouble for shouting out not paying attention.

    DO I HAVE ADHD

  • I feel like I figured out some of this stuff on my own.

  • fuck this life.. i got rid of anxiety and now this??!!!!

  • arg... all of this is so true... as someone with ADD it really sucks!Unable to move towards the things you care most about and keenly aware of it!

  • where can I get ritalin from?

  • @duttywine64

A psychiatrist or a doctor, after or while you are been diagnosed with ADHD.

Took me 3 months. But I was a obvious case.

  • i have ADHD and i take Folclin XL.

  • You are amazing!

  • If you enjoyed this video, you may like the others by Dr. Barkley at ADHDLectures

  • This is a real thing people! It effects me hugely in my every day life with how I do things, and or learn stuff. It's hard for me to pay attention and get along with people.

  • I have ADHD and ADD I've been diagnosed with both since I was in the fourth grade. Ive been on a medication for the past four almost five years now. Although the medication helps with calming me down and helping me pay attention in school, I still have the hardest times understanding things. When I try and explain to people why it's so hard I can't come up with a logical reason why I just don't understand it. I majorly get ad that when I tell people that I'm diagnosed with these disorders and t

  • @MrMaksuSan I know just what you mean. It has happened to me that when I tell people I have ADHD-PI, they either understand nothing about the disorder or resort to treating me like a child (or both!). My IQ has been tested in the 98th percentile, and I'm sick of being condescended to by people who know that I have this disorder.

  • @memorydevastate Me too! It has been frustrating at times to be looked down upon, when I have a Mensa-level intellect. Pity and condescension are nasty energies, so I have to smudge often to keep my auric field clear. Then I'm more able to stay peaceful and loving.

  • I have a severe ADD and I feel like killing myself cuz I am useless.

I am insanely skilled at computer programming but only when I am learning something new, when its time to use it on work I totally lose my brain like it does not want to think.

    I hate my life :(

  • @XusDog I have ADHD too I am Electrical Engineerer and have a hard time too. But dont give up mate.

    Just remind yourself this:-

    Yesterday is history,

    tomorrow is a mystery.

    Today is a git,

that is why it is called present.

  • @XusDog i know a guy who has major ADHD. Its not a great idea 2 kill yourself. Ur not useless

  • I have add, and in college i am having a hard difficult time adjusting to it.

  • Saaaaaay waahhht? :o

  • Adhd is when a percentage of your conscious mind is thinking while the rest is doing what it should be doing.

  • No manager wants success completely defined on the company’s terms. They want success defined by their own terms too.

Definition of Success for Managers: IMPACT. slapCompany

  • @TheGoOdDieFirSt Forgive me for perhaps seeming a little ignorant, but what exactly is wrong with 'UCDAVIS M.I.N.D Institute' [00.41]?

  • @MrMaksuSan Oh boy. **Facepalm. If your going to try and defend the intelligence of those with ADHD, you should probably learn to use proper grammar first. You my friend, make those of us with ADHD look stupid. O_O

  • Do you know what I wish I could help you. I've spent years trying to understand and feel alot better now I know more. He's playing football and did kickboxing for about 7 years to help him if he is bullied. Might ask him if he wants to go back to use more energy xx

  • Thanks for the advise. I'll keep a close eye on him. Speaking from experience try to stop smoking it though cause it won't help your memory In the long run and with your ADHD it will be even worse. He has said things like that to me before. I'm lucky that he does talk to me quite alot. I just hope he still feels he can as he gets older. He's now on rispiridone for his tourettes and it's slowed him down a bit and helping with his memory xx

  • this wasnt made for people with adhd

  • @TheGoOdDieFirSt omg me too once the music started i just read comments and forgot about the video

  • @waterspindle. I'm sorry to hear that. I guess ignorance knows no nationality! Well at least these children have more support nowadays. Again I suppose that depends on parents, family and friends. We have found a really good support group for my son. He loves it because he can relax knowing all there have ADHD. X

  • ADHD children really do have a weakness approach many aspects of life......... I was wondering how do they ABLE to maintain a good relationship with ppl for long time ......

Q1)Do their Mood disorder can be "suppressed" by rational mind thinking?

  • i have adhd and i take ritalin

  • I wish the English public were as accepting of ADHD as the Americans. My son has ADHD and tourettes and so many ignorant people say there is no such thing . I get sick of hearing" there was no such thing in my day". Even his principal told him off for his tics !!!

  • @GriffonCraZy77 Find your son more physical activity to burn his energy...When you are sitting around with built up energy your mind starts going millions of miles an hour and with your mind going wild it is hard to control your emotions...I was on ritalin, 50 mg, than up to 100, than concerta and i still failed every grade since the fourth grade. When my parents took me off the pills completely i had a panic attack at the age of 15... Now i have to smoke marijuana just to function...

  • Respond to this video... My parent dont even know i smoke because i feel and react just the same as when i was on ritalin and concerta...I DONT KNOW WHO I AM...Has your son ever told you that?...If not he will...Now i am only speaking about the ADHD...The touretts i know nothing about...No disrespect to you..Just be careful he does not turn into me..

  • So many fake disorders out there, seems to be one for everything. If drug companies come up with some sort of "disorder", they will get gullible (apparently most of society) to believe they have it so they can sell them addicting drugs.

  • I couldnt watch more than 8 minutes Im bored to death even though I want to listen. Btw what is ritalin, I heard its some knd of medicine?

  • @luigiman83 ya it is a stimulant used to help treat the disorder

  • @luigiman83 Yes, but I think I was over-dosed. I felt so stoned in middle school and I was so anxious. I felt as if I didn't get my work done in that time-frame that that it was the end of the world. Worst time of my life and it took away from my childhood

  • Epic shit! I popped two 10mg ritalin pills, and watched the whole thing! one sitting! i'm fucking ecstatic right now!!

  • This is so long, i tried watching it but only got to 10 mins, ill watch it tomorrow, though, if i can remember. I'm gonna watch it after taking my ritalin, good test to see if it works. I know it works on me, but that is a more empirical test than saying that i feel the effects.

  • Everybody look up "Neurofeedback". I tried it for anxiety and adhd symptoms. I didn't get any relief from training high beta waves (for attention and focus) but I have gotten results from training alpha waves (for stress relief/anxiety relief) to the point of feeling stoned. My therapist says for some people it works, and other people it doesn't. Some people the training stays with for a long time. Some loose the results from the training quickly..check it out...

  • When I was 16, I acted like a 10 year old. At 30 I acted 16. At 50, maybe 25 which is not as bad. Is this a normal ADD thing? Also is there anywhere in the world that uses benzphentamine as a treatment? If it is too addicting, you may want to find a way to make it non addicting. It is the cure. Is there anywhere I can volunteer myself as an ADDer for treatments. I am sick of this stuff. You must really get a video of people with this stuff so we can see what it looks like.

  • DUDE!! making a video to/about people with ADHD, is a good idea... but making it over an hour long, is not that good an idea

  • Saw your video on Management of ADHD. Thought it was great. Have you ever considered making a course out this material? There is a site out there called topointc.com that you can post courses on. I guess it allows you to post them for free and when students take your course you get paid.

  • 11. ADHD, if not treated, can lead to horrible outcomes for the sufferers

    12. ADHD is not political. it is not something that can be voted on. it is a disorder of the brain. you cannot say it doesnt exist.

    13. people with ADHD have a smaller right prefrontal cortex than people without ADHD

    14. people with ADHD have less brain activity overall in the frontal lobes than people without ADHD. this can be shown by fMRI studies

  • Facts About ADHD:

    1. Its not fully understood

    2. Its not exclusive to stupid people

    3. its not exclusive to geniuses

    4. Medication is a recommended response from renowned scientists

    5. Therapy is a recommended response from renowned scientists

    6. Medical Cannabis is still debated whether it truly helps or not,

    7. Barkley's Hypothesis are for the time being sound, and unless someone else has a link to a valid theory otherwise,

    8. ADHD is largely recognized as real, get used to it,

  • More Facts:

    9. ADD = ADHD, the DSM4 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) voted the name change in 1994

    10. no matter how you got it or how you think you got ADHD, it is NOT okay to not deal with it. You have an opportunity to help get better from a crippling and real disorder. you should seek help if you feel like it is interfering with you're life. This thing is not a gift, its not a benefit, its not something special, Its hard to deal with, youre not weak for getting help!

  • Comment removed

  • @BrewedalTea 15. ADHD is not a gift. You can't ask for ADHD legislation, school support, or special educational entitlements for ADHD while at the same time saying "well it's a gift"

  • @MrMaksuSan

..and also not with being highly intelligent, just different.

  • Whoever told you that ppl w/ADD or ADHD are dumb? Most persons with ADD/ADHD are of genius level intelligence. Statistics can show ya that, look it up. :D

  • @clausen317 well don't associate genius with ADHD either because then will surmise that only smart people can get it and not dumb people :\

  • Be ready Asian women online #lushfmlk.info#

  • this vid is so old i i don't even hear about SCT today. but i'm convinced that he's right. anyone with SCT who benefits of strattera??

  • @almightycornholio I think SCT is relatively a new thing. I think they were considering adding it to the DSM in 2012.

  • executive functions disorder could be the name in DSM-V,at the end it seems better to refer the function and not the simptom in the naming of the disorder.I wish a scientific advance to improve the live quality of the 7% of human population.

  • @jackordas executive function disorder makes more sense than ADHD if you think about it. most of the executive functioning comes from the prefrontal cortex, the prefrontal cortex is not functioning like it should in ADHD people according to fMRI studies, which makes sense why people with ADHD exhibit executive functioning deficits

  • I have a child who has ADHD. I don't drink, smoke, do drugs, etc. ever I and had a healthy pregnancy, but the kid was like a popcorn bag in a microwave oven in my gut. I'm not so sure about this guys research; some of it was encouraging, and some of it was not. I personally think it is a personality type. Many CEO's have ADHD. They have great out of the box ideas, but they need a good secretary and people to organize and make the idea a reality.

  • I hate people who express their opinions instead of asking questions.

  • What's with all these LONG videos about ADHD?

  • drugs don't work wonders, they do have desirable/undesirable effects and side effects though, and I've found caffeine helps, but I only drink 4 cans a month or so because if you do it too much it loses effect

I will say this much, marijuana is a painkiller, apparently tylenol does something in the liver which can come up as THC in a drug test

the second aspect at around 7-8 minutes or so, I constantly do, always been a bit like that, when I can remember and take care of side tasks I'm amazed

  • @threadysparrow

I was diagnosed with ADD as a kid....I fit all the criteria, as do many people.

(can you say the same thing about schizophrenia?)

What a scandal this whole thing is..........

ADHD is a term that was actually VOTED into existence by the American Psychiatric Association, and cannot be validated by any real test!

  • @janejanejane7 and you have obviously never seen fMRI data, empirical research data, or any science what so ever. have you? i dont think so. you have not read a god damned thing about ADHD from any research study. why is it then that every research university has done research on ADHD and has seen the same phenomenon pop up? is it that they are all in on the scam too? wake the fuck up bitch

  • @threadysparrow

what makes you think that this so called "empirical evidence" cannot be manipulated, that scientists intentions are always honest and that there is not shitloads of profit involved in the existence of adhd?

millions of dollars are being made on the pill dependency of basically healthy people....therapists give scrips out like candy. on the first appointment.

you are really sad and sheltered if you truly think you are not being lied to. :)

  • @janejanejane7 oh shut the fuck up with this conspiracy nonsense. nobodys making shit up ok just live with it. you fucking retard

  • @threadysparrow case in point

  • @janejanejane7 you are really sad and probably had a piss poor life if you genuinely think everyone is out to manipulate. and because if all scientists objectives where to make money, we would run out of scientists, many things takes years and years to develop, such as the theories for ADHD. and if a pill helps people, and it is proven to help people. then obviously a company should be paid well for helping millions of people. you're reasonings are convoluted.

  • @janejanejane7 ADD is ADHD. you just lost all credibility

  • @BrewedalTea

I AM AWARE THAT ADD AND ADHD ARE THE SAME THING....you dingbat!

  • I was diagnosed with a mental disorder called ESSM (eating, sleeping, and sex malfunction).

The main symptoms are eating a whole plate of food at one sitting, up to three times a day (unless I'm on the go, then maybe I'll get a hot dog)

Then it comes out the other end (I know, gross)

I'm terrible with sleep too, omg. Some nights I'll fall asleep for seven hours straight. It's like my brain and my eyelids just can't take it anymore.

People who don't have this just don't get how hard it is!

  • @janejanejane7 dont make a mockery of adhd. you are making fun of a serious condition

  • Weed is the cure all for this dreaded disease.

  • @TrampledRights

No, I used to smoke heavily and can tell you it cures it while you are stoned but only magnifies the problem when you are sober.

Being a drug addict is exactly what will destroy the ADDer. It's the compulsive addictive personality. You sir are a moron.

  • @csfreak51

LOL, actually, the moron is YOU with no sense of humor. You take yourself WAY too seriously, you are nothing but dust, you fool.

  • @TrampledRights

Life is serious. It's naive and foolish not to think so. This life is all you have... if you feel "comfortable" doing nothing and wasting your life getting high then that is your decision. Hardly a life.

  • @csfreak51

Well, I must say that you are quite entertaining, if nothing else. You are obviously WAY too young to even begin to understand a word I say. Go stand in front of the mirror, naked, and then tell me how important you are. LOL. I'm ADHD like a lot of people, have smoked my entire life, keeps the edge soft and I made $30,000 last month, had a great time, love my hobbies and I was wondering what you accomplished with yourself and your "cure".

  • @TrampledRights you must be a pot head because the only people who support pot as medical treatment are people who just want to get high

  • @threadysparrow

    and your point is what?

  • @TrampledRights i think its funny. thats my point

  • @threadysparrow

and my point is that it's within your own power to do what you want and under whatever circumstances you want. It's quite interesting to read all of this. CALM THE FUCK DOWN!

  • @TrampledRights listen. the desire to do something is not the only thing that is required to do something. you must also have the means by which to do it. that "The Secret" crap is a lie. people with ADHD do not have the means by which to not have ADHD anymore. i cant make this any clearer. there is no such thing as "where there is a will there is a way" when it comes to mental illness.

  • @threadysparrow you are incredibly misinformed. i know several cancer patients whose quality of life was greatly improved by only a small amount of marajuania. there are many other medical benefits, arthiritis, fibromyalgia are less painful , so , maybe do some research

  • @cashmonkey9 and the science says that the prescriptions that they have out there now, like THC pills and stuff, is better for a cancer patient than smoking weed. i think its funny how people say "do some research" when they are the ones who are wrong. thats like calling someone stupid because they believe in gravity

  • @threadysparrow you are a fool. i never said smoking weed is the best treatment, you are just a dick. you are looking for a bullshit arguement when you know i am right.

  • @cashmonkey9 i am saying that only pot heads support pot

  • @threadysparrow and only morons ignore medical benefits because someone else says its wrong .

  • @cashmonkey9 yeah. scientists say it has no benefit

  • @threadysparrow bullshit

  • @TrampledRights

Proof or it didn't happen. I am a 23 year old musician in a national touring band. I go to the best parties, get the hottest chicks, and have the coolest friends. You are old and fat. Money doesn't cure you or buy you happiness. Weed also doesn't cure anything. When I stand in front of the mirror naked I get turned on because I workout and do things with my life.

I suggest you try doing something with yourself that others value. Nobody cares about your money and pot

  • @csfreak51

LOL...loser. I am 160 pounds and could probably kick your stupid little ass, even at my age, you loser. Beyond that, I own 4 companies, 3 of which are consumer advocacy businesses where we donate our time and money, you fucking dolt. You should really concern yourself with reality, and not your version of what or who you THINK you are. You are shit. I promise.

  • @TrampledRights

You sound mad. Only fatasses get mad over weed / the internet.

  • @csfreak51

you are an idiot whose mind is closed...why don't you go join a madras?

  • @TrampledRights and this is a sure-fire nominee for retarded comment of the year award. im guessing you think weed also cures homosexuality and aids too?

  • @BrewedalTea hahah.. Yea, it does cure homosexuality, why don't you go smoke some and find out.!! :-)

  • @TrampledRights - No it isn't and you know it too. Flippancy doesn't help, really.

  • I also want to say that anybody here who has ADHD and has believed the lies their whole lives that they are messed up are simply cowards. If you are suffering from symptoms it is being caused by your LIFESTYLE. Get a real life and stop using drugs as a crutch for your problems.

I took counselling and changed my diet in 9th grade and I was cured. I became incredibly talented in art and other abstract forms of school (Philosophy,etc.).

Don't be a pussy and let the doctors lie to you.

  • @csfreak51 that's so condescending, i would think that someone who actually had ADHD would try to help empower people to take the reins for themselves, not calling them pussies, you probably just grew out of it during you're teenage years, so consider yourself lucky. you are one of the few. and essentially counseling in itself is a temporary crutch as you it helps you get back on you're feet, so you are a pussy too, you didn't to it on your own you had someone help you through behavioral therapy

  • @csfreak51 so don't trash talk people using a different method that isn't yours okay doood?!

  • I am a poster child for ADHD. I was diagnosed at age 5 and put through humiliating "Special ed" classes. I was put on every medication ever made for ADHD. I was kicked out of school for behavior problems and all sorts of junk. I stopped taking my meds in highschool and I became incredibly happy and I had a handful of my teachers call me "the most brilliant student they ever taught". Teachers realized my incredible out of the box thinking and realized I saw things for what they were.

  • @csfreak51

UGH....they treated me like I was special too.

  • I ask you..: How many ADHD kids does it take to change a light bulb?

    A: Wanna ride bikes??????

  • I hope this disease is understood

  • @chadycom you are retarded. he is supporting these drugs because they have been proven to work

  • @chadycom This is an oft repeated claim. Do you have any data to back up your claims? Are there studies to conclude that these deaths and suicides were caused by methylphenidate, adderall etc.? If they do exist, I would greatly appreciate it if you could point me to them. Thanks.

  • @Metman07 he cant point you to them because he is an idiot making connections where they dont exist

  • This probably isn't the best type of video for someone who has ADHD... I skipped forward 30 seconds in :D

  • @ashaley24 I skipped forward 12mins...

  • If you are unable to look beyond such interpretations and so cannot recognize the reality to which the word points, then don't use it. Don't get stuck on the level of words. A word is no more than a means to an end. It's an abstraction. Not unlike a signpost, it points beyond itself. The word ADHD isn't ADHD. People can talk and study ADHD for as long as they like, but you won't really understand it until you taste it and trust me you don't want to taste it.

  • i have ADHD

    but i am totally opposite

    i struggle w/making good grades

im in college & its hard 4 me at times

but im getting lots of help tho

but everyone is different i guess

  • I dont get why everyone thinks people with ADHD are dumb. I have ADHD and i get straight A's.

  • Exactly. I'm a vice president of a Fortune 500 company.

  • @gotmilk311

Same here. My IQ was measured at 162. Sure, I get distracted in the detail, but I think detail is important. I never took drugs to "coral" me like a wild horse. My daughter has it and has issues with her big mouth. Everything in her head comes out of her mouth and gets her into trouble. Another gets straight A's, the other is ADD, is a talented guy, but grades suffer due to his inability to focus on things he doesn't like. He gets blinded by things he DOES like.

  • @TrampledRights I know how you feel about taking ADHD pills. I've been taking adderall ever since I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 3, and frankly it is not a pleasurable experience. Usually, I'm a pretty happy-go-lucky guy, but whenever I'm on adderall, I feel depressed and groggy, just like a zombie. However, the reason I take them is to do well in school. I've been trying to depend less on adderall, but without it I just can't get things done.

  • @gotmilk311 i dont think so, i know a lot of poeple with ADHD, they are all skaters, and they are really nice nd smart

  • @gotmilk311

Nobody believes people with ADHD are dumb, but if that is what you got out of Dr. Barkley's lecture, then you exhibit exactely what he is talking about when he lectures on inattention.

  • @gotmilk311 Grades and intelligence have little to no correlation.

  • @gotmilk311 they arn't dumb, just easily distracted

  • @gotmilk311 your logic is flawed:

    1) people don't think that individual's suffering from ADHD are dumb, attention span =/= dumbness.

    2) getting straight A's may not necessarily predict intelligence, maybe you are studying 4 times the amount of other students?

    3) ADHD in your case might not actually be true ADHD, but another case of misdiagnosis, in which case the medication acts more as a placebo rather than a stimulant.

Take in consideration confounding variables while showing off your grades)

  • @Brootahlizer Many of my teachers have thought I am dumb. After all, not everyone is open-minded enough to accept ADHD as a fact. For the record, I'm pretty certain I have ADHD; I was diagnosed when I was a young child, and my doctor today still recognizes my ADHD. I'll be honest, I don't really have to try that much to do well in school. I wasn't trying to show off or anything , I was just trying to provide an example. If you must know, my IQ is 130, which is considered in the "gifted" range.

  • @gotmilk311 which test battery have you been with? tests available on the internet aren't valid. and IQ isn't really the best predictor of all things, do some research :) it isn't the best predictor of performance, motivation, academic achievement, and so forth :) so yeah, posting your IQ doesn't really place a star in your forehead, neither does it make you appear intelligent :)

  • @Brootahlizer Wow, I just love how you automatically assume I took some cheap-ass online test. I took the Stanford-Binet test when I was 3 or 4, at the same time my ADHD was diagnosed. And guess what, I'm not the only one on this comment page to post my IQ. :)

  • @gotmilk311 I hope you're aware of the existence of at least 4 editions of the Standford-Binet test. Also, it is highly unlikely that you have been tested at the age of 3, and even if by chance and chance alone that happened, do you really think that the IQ score obtained would be a valid and reliable estimate of your actual IQ? IQ scores can fluctuate by a standard deviation during the lifespan of a person, due to various environmental changes. Get learnt ;)

  • @Brootahlizer First of all, I'm pretty sure I took it when I was 4 (read my last comment), since I have documents of my testing which I've seen myself. Second of all, IQ scores usually only fluctuate about 4 or 5 points during a persons lifespan. Sure, I guess it's possible for your IQ to decrease by AN ENTIRE DEVIATION (?)......if you spend your entire childhood getting stoned :P

  • @gotmilk311 actually even insignificant environmental factors, such as positive, negative, or intermittent tester feedback can account for deviations of up to one standard deviation. But yeah, the stoned thing works too :)))

  • @Brootahlizer That situation seems plausible, but I highly doubt that it's common. Most modern statistics and doctors agree that a person's IQ can be expected only to change by about 4 or 5 points during his/her lifetime.

  • Comment removed

  • @gotmilk311 How can a person with ADHD get an accurate IQ rating if the tests require many executive functions that are lacking because of the nature of ADHD (ie focus, working memory, wanting to get the hell out of the stupid test and skateboard, etc.)??????

So IQ tests can deviate a lot if u hav ADD. fyi my IQ officially tested in grade school was 140ish. I've taken other IQ tests and it's ranged from 120 to 140.

  • @gotmilk311 My point is IQ is hard to objectively measure for an ADHD person because of the requirements in the test that would heavily require executive functions (versus cognitive functions). This makes it difficult to measure the real IQ of an ADDer.

the best way to measure your IQ is by winning arguments against pple on YouTube. I dont have a numerical scoring system for that yet. Right now I'm pretty much on the top of the list in my IQ test. :)

  • @felix242 That made me laugh. so true.

  • @Brootahlizer @gotmilk311 Wow, I just love how you automatically assume I took some cheap-ass online test. I was given Stanford-Binet test when I was 3 or 4, at the same time my ADHD was diagnosed. And guess what, I'm not the only one on this comment page to post my IQ. :)

  • He has the knowledge AND he has the understanding of the relations, and so he manages to crush myths, making new perspectives, etc about AD/HD.

Hes a AD/HD genious, brilliant work Barkley!!

  • That is what our society wants from me. It is not MY society. I would function better in a society where being different is applauded, where my strange, creative ideas are appreciated or at least listened to, without being discarded as crazy. Where the schooling system sees the potential of people like me instead of kicking me out after 3 years of high school. I speak, read and write 4 languages, am a technical wizard and a filmmaker and have an IQ of 139. All without education. Who's crazy ?

  • @BartNopper...you are ranting!! But I agree with you. Nothing's wrong with being different. What's not broken shouldn't need to be fixed. If your ADHD is not disrupting your life or inteferring with other people's lives, then there's no need for anyone to make a big negative deal out of it. I don't know if I make any sense...I don't have ADHD but this is just my humble opinion.

  • Sometimes it would be an advantage to have an ADHD brain in stead of a "normal" one. Example? When the wonderfully "normal" George W Bush heard about the WTC disaster, he didn't move for minutes and had no idae what to do. Believe me, that would not have happened with an ADHD president. He would have known what to do in a nanosecond and would have acted accordingly.

As for treatment: I use Ritalin to my disgust. I use it so I can postpone my often "inapropriate" reactions and fit in better.

  • @BartNopper he would have made a choice, but its an impulsive choice, you cant be accordingly with impulsive, its random and that what makes it frowned upon sometimes, because that impulse could make you do almost anything.

  • Fortunately there will be new guidelines in DSM V that will also take into account the incredible positive potential of an ADHD brain. I am proud to say that a Dutch psychiatrist is partly responsible for that broader view. Our wiring works in different ways. Sometimes at an advantage sometimes not. But doesn't that go for every brain? A "nomal" brain can have it's limitations as well, don't forget that. Maybe it isn't obvious because there are so many "normal" brains around.

  • It is thought, cannot be proven anymore unfortunately, that some of your revered Founding Fathers probably had what we now call ADHD. Bill Clinton is highly suspected of the same as is Einstein and JFK. It is easy to say that someone who doesn't fit the bill exactly has a disorder or a mental health problem. If you're different, you're crazy, right? Think about that. The internationally accepted norm to diagnose ADHD as written down in the DSM IV, only looks at the so called "problem areas".

  • I didn't see all the video, that takes to long for someone with a concentration issue. But I did read a lot of the responses. I am flabbergsted by the reactions. I read words like mental illness, disorder, sickness and what have you. I am Dutch and here in Holland the thoughts about ADHD are shifting slowly from a "sick brain" to a "different brain". Think about this: Isn't it possible that there more kinds of brain wiring that serve or served a different purpose ?

  • I suffer from ADHD as well, the reason it is attacked so much is because it dose not seem like a disorder to some, but it is

I actually have tested my behavior when I started back on my medication "concerta"

before I would daydream and could barely stay focused one one thing, its not that I didn't want to, I just couldn't.

in five days of my medication I learned over 6 courses of algebra and went from 5 f's

    to b's and a's

ADHD is a real disorder and the medication works

  • yeah but... its all a big coverup because im a retard and i dont believe in science

  • Sounds like a pharmaceutical sales pitch to me.

  • it seems that people like to attack ADHD without having ANY education or experience in the field of ADHD. scientologists are the worse. but people all over like to say things like it is overdiagnosed. HOW THE FUCK DO YOU KNOW ITS OVERDIAGNOSED?! ARE YOU A RESEARCHER?!. this isnt directed at you doncarbone. its directed at society

  • the only reason, to my knowledge, and based entirely on what Dr. Barkley (in this video) says; is that ADHD is one of the most understood and therefore most treatable mental illnesses.

i mean that makes sense right; if it's understood the most, of COURSE it's treated the most.

  • it is so misunderstood in my opinion

  • why does he go into an ADHD antithesis?

  • im assuming that question is directed at me. i offered an antithesis only because i myself am an ADHD sufferer. im able to detect the major differences between 1 kid who cant focus because of lack of discipline and another who cant focus because of adhd

adhd sufferers live a blurred existence. they cant focus because their mind is overwhelming them with thoughts. this leaves them unable to detect simple sub-text in conversation, and many other things a normal person takes for granted.

  • but people with other mental illnesses have their own burdens to bear. all im saying is that people attack the ADHD diagnosis saying its overdiagnosed and that medication is bad. but the truth is that there is no evidence to say it is overdiagnosed and the evidence DOES show that medication helps.

what irritates me is people look the other way with other mental disorders yet they feel it is ok to attack ADHD because its popular. but do we see people attacking depression or OCD like they do ADHD?

  • i guess this is just a silly public perception like a lot of other public perceptions.

u and i both seem to agree that ADHD is a serious mental illness; so obviously it needs to be treated accordingly.

of course it's going to get a lot of negative flack; especially in the treatment of children...a lot of people argue that inattentiveness and impulse behavior in children are normal; which is true; but it's not normal when the symptoms are severe.

  • The air force thought i was on drugs because my adhd symptoms were similar to someone on a particular drug. and they basically forced me to lie and falsely confess to drugs in writing and they gave me a court martial

  • As a kid I took ridalin. at age 9 I was force off the medication by my guardian. at 18 I joined the aif force and began my learning on my own with no help, of how to control it. There were a lot of mental gymnastics through the years before I could turn my disability into an advantage. It did not involve any drugs or outside advise.

  • im a psychologist, and i dont think being distracted, being curious about the world around, feeling relunctant to get back to work after a distraction is a disorder.

i dont think it is abnomal for children to run around and play and not want to study.

just because American Psychiatric Association once voted ADD in as a mental disorder by a show of hands in 1980 doesnt mean this disorder really exists and we all should now start taking drugs and drugging our kids for not being attentive enough.

  • wow doc! how encouraging for those who suffer from this disorder - that obviously exists.

  • people suffer for many reasons

but not every sadness is a depression, not every inattentiveness is ADHD, and certainly not every suffering requires a pharmacological treatment.
